I can't help but think about all those people over the last 30+ years who told me I was a fool for saying App should to be 1-A / FBS...

Ethan Joyce, Appalchian State's beat writer for the Winston-Salem Journal, says this is the first CBS appearance for App State since 1983 vs. The Citadel.

This. All the naysayers both within our own fanbase and certainly within FCS. Or the folks like JMU who turned down the same opportunity we took.
They are all at home sitting on their hands and we will be a top 25 program playing on CBS in a primetime slot.

there's definitely been a lot of luck involved, but we took our chance and really made the most of it.

Saturday, both App and Marshall will be “rueing the day we left the Southern Conference,” in the SEC time slot.

I played ice hockey and scored a lot of lucky goals. Or alternatively I constantly put myself in a good position for the puck to “bounce” my way.
Or what’s that old saying, preparation and opportunity?

I have that game on VHS tape and little did I know at the time what a huge impact it would have on how College Football is structured today. In 1983 the NCAA owned exclusive rights to college football and determined who was shown. USC & UGA had a big game that week, but the NCAA owed the SoCon a regional telecast and opted for the App- Citadel game. Lawsuits for breaking up the NCAA's monopoly were filed in the following weeks and as Paul Harvey would say... Now you know the rest of the story...

I was at App when Marshall left (the '94 game on a rainy night in Boone is still one of my fondest football memories). I remember people mocking Marshall for taking the jump at the time, but there were also plenty of us wondering why we weren't going with them.

If it were at App it could be on ABC, but not CBS. CBS owns CUSA content, and with no SEC, they needed content. Just glad they need it the weekend you two are playing.
Now go win!!!

AppFaninCAAland - I too was in Boone that fateful rainy night. For some reason, I just remember being miserable as I exited the stadium where YOSEF and Co. were giving us the #1 sign! Much fonder for me would be that late season game in 1996 (w Randy Moss) and a hard fought victory... Gonna be electric on Saturday in The Joan!

I had posted something similar over on YC, but my understanding of the time isn't as strong (I was 7 years old and didn't follow App football in 83). I am glad to read this post from the premier App football historian to learn I my understanding was on the mark.
I remember reading an article in SI in the mid 80s (probably from a time in between when that suit was decided and Penn State and Florida State abandoning football independence) that accurately predicted the emergence of 5 Power Conferences, the dissolution of the Big East, SWC, and the WAC, the conference championship games, and the big TV deals. It even hit pretty close to the mark on who would go where. As a big ACC basketball fan at the time, the main reason I still remember that article was because of how silly its predictions were, like how Syracuse and Louisville would eventually join the ACC.

Marshall played Ohio State in 2004 a 24-21 loss, lost on a 55 yard FG from Mike Nugent with .02 on the clock. The game was on ABC.

I knew in 1988 when Joan C Edwards stadium was proposed that we would be going IA soon, the stadium opened in 1991 and we were in the MAC in 1997.

At the time we jumped I thought the next 2 programs to jump would be McNeese State and Appy State. At the time McNeese was on fire now they are a middle of the pack team in a bloated Southland conference. It took Appy and GA Southern 17 years after Marshall but they eventually took the leap.

CBS didn't choose one of the markets from C-USA for national coverage. This just doesn't compute.
Is Marshall not in CUSA? Am I missing something? I get what your saying but they are choosing one team from CUSA

Just a couple mountain towns that know how to play football.
Quality over Quantity, what a concept!
Seems like a smart way to build a conference...
