See how the WAC stacks up against each other.

I'm always suspicious of their data...administrators filling out survey return forms, each interpreting it their own way. And always a few numbers that don't make sense.

For example, Chicago State has an enrollment crisis but their acceptance rate is 33%. What is CSU thinking?

What I guess happened: most schools are reporting percentage of applicants who get an acceptance letter...a low number implies selectivity and high standards. But others are reporting percentage of students who accept an offer of admission...a low number indicates it's a undesirable backup option.

Sure, USNWR has an official definition. But the people filling it out either might forget to read it, or decide to ignore it. Not saying CSU did any of that, but if they really rejected 67% of applicants they're either getting an incredible number of illegitimate applications, or they need a new director of admissions.

Well, you can criticize his typos. But a friend of a friend told me you'd been seen hanging out in a conference realignment thread. What about that, huh?

RE: USWNR
Does anyone actually value the journalistic contributions of the U.S. News & World Report to our general society beyond these rankings? If not, why do we GAF about how they rank schools?

Like, I remember growing up that it was a HUGE deal for local businesses to be ranked in any New Times "Best of Phoenix" categories. As I got older, I realized that the New Times was just some local rag filled with smoke shop ads that peddled mostly in "Gotcha!" conspiracy theory "journalism".

Nobody takes the publication seriously beyond these stupid rankings, so why care about who they say is the "Best of Phoenix" in anything?

Mostly agree. Don't know how old you are, but there was a time back in the 80's when the big three weeklies (Time, Newsweek, and USNWR) were the main source for anyone who wanted more analysis than the daily paper and evening news. But that time is long gone and now USNWR mainly exists to produce these rankings.

The most damaging part of it is that a lot of mid-range universities, especially privates, actually change policies and priorities to try and game these ratings. Stuff like soliciting applications from kids they have no intention of admitting in order to drive the acceptance percentage down and look serious, but then softening standards internally to get the graduation rate up. It looks like at some places the toughest hurdle is getting in, after that a diploma in four years is sort of guaranteed.

Well other than UT Dallas we're above all the other UT and A&M schools. So that's nice.

Guilty as charged. I feel so dirty just thinking about that.
