Local Media nearly totally irrelevant
Seems to me that the local media have painted themselves into a corner and are in serious danger of become totally irrelevant. And the unfortunate thing is, they've done it to themselves.

Calkins tries to either be super cool with the hipster GP, or just totally agitating people online with liberal silliness.

GP has solidified himself as being the worst. Just the worst.

Giannnotto seems to only be interested in doing some big "gotcha" piece to make a name for himself and move on to covering sports in a bigger market.

Evan Barnes (the Memphis football reporter for the CA, in case you don't (probably don't) know) is busy talking about music or standing firm on the attendance "numbers" reported to Tiger games.

Jason & John - I don't know, maybe it I was still 12 I could stomach more than 5 minutes of their show. Maybe.

Verno - lost me with his "Free Piano Man" shtick - I guess if I really, really, really loved the Griz I might listen.

And I'm sure whoever is on Sports56 has a great game of 10 Questions going on right about now - I don't know this, but I know it's true.

At any rate, I have stopped listening to the radio entirely, and dropped my subscriptions to local papers this year and won't go back with the current bunch of hacks. It's really just too bad.

Guess it's been this way for a while now - thinking of Cal & the miserable's, Tommy's rant, all the cheap shots to Rip. Now they're going after Penny, and didn't let Silverfield make it past 1-0 before this bus garbage.

Good riddance local media.

If you want real tiger info then gotigers247 is the only way to go, Brooks has more credibility than anyone from our local media

Barnes is probably the worst FB beat writer ever. I wish they would separate their personal accounts from their job accounts so I don't have to put up with all the other crap they post. And why in the world are they not hiring local people as beat writers for Tiger sports?! In my opinion, local beat writers should be biased for the schools they cover. That is just good business. These outsiders couldn't care less and love hating on the program at every turn.

The bottom line, is that because of their stupidity, they have little to no access to either staff.

The Tiger programs desperately need local media. If the Tiger staff is not providing access then it’s terribly short sighted. I just can’t imagine thats the case, however.

They have local media. What else are Barnes, Giamoron, GP, Smith and Martin going to talk about? You think it is shortsighted for the staff to deny access and privileged information to those that they deem to be idiots? How does that make sense?

Yep, and now they have lost so much of their audience. I'm sure they're telling themselves it'll come back around once Covid is done and the world of sports gets back to normal . . . but I don't think so. I think a combination of just poor quality (see Barnes & Giannotto) and guys morphing into political commentators (see GP & Calkins) has driven so many audience members away. And many won't come back. And it's their own fault.

In a way Covid, the long absence of sports and the social justice issue has exposed them for being a bunch of empty suits and made us realize that we don’t need them to find relevant sports info or entertainment. I realized I wasted so many hours listening or following them

Desperately need local media?

More and more it seems to me you are becoming a national "brand", that is even bigger than the conference your are in, much less the local media.

If I wanted to listen to somebody tell me how smart they are and how stupid I am, I would put my wife on speakerphone for the drive home.

It's not the case; however, local media doesn't seem to think they are to be bothered by going through proper channels. They run with stories and rumors all the time without actually going through the media department. It's the whole rush to be first to break the story that passes for journalism and then it's mentioned by other "journalist" and so the story becomes "confirmed" to them.

I've heard first hand stories of how bad it has been and even seen it with my own eyes. I watched two of the people mentioned in the OP, sit and chat with each other throughout an entire scrimmage, never once looking at the action on the field, then both wrote pieces covering the action.

As bad as it is, it’s infinitely better than any other program outside the P5. They are lucky to have one host or segment covering the home team per day. That’s not to say it shouldn’t be better, it should...just that, it could be and has been worse.

RE: Local Media nearly totally irrelevant
I quit listening to Sports 56 a few years back. Occasionally I would tune into Johnny radio or listen Stats and Wolo. And every once in a while I still do.

I would listen to Jason and John and GP on 92.9/AM 680. Mainly because they talked a lot about the Tigers. I mostly listened to GP because I would tune in on the drive home from work. Both were entertaining shows. When politics started becoming front and center on GP show, I quit listening back in March.
