Going completely off the top of my head, without looking at win totals, win percentages, Final Four totals, whatever, I would throw in these schools in the almost-blue blood category:

Again these aren't listed in order, nor am I dead set on the list. Just curious about others' opinions.

I'm surprised Gonzaga isn't up there. They have been in the NCAA tournament for the last 21 years to various moments of success. For the immediate future I don't see that changing tell at the very least Mark Few leaves. He may have at least 5 to 10 years left to coach left in him. National championships help but I would say current success outshines stuff that happened 30-40 years ago.

Bad oversight on my part. I don't know why they didn't come to mind.

That’s not an oversight at all. Gonzaga doesn’t fit any definition of blueblood. They have 2 NCAA appearances before Few.

Gonzaga can fall in at the "best of the rest level", towards the bottom.

RE: College Basketball Tiers
At least in men's basketball tiers can be measured by actual performance and results unlike football where before the 1990's championships were determined by polls and you won championships not by merit but because people felt sorry for your head coach because he never won before (cough, Tom Osborne).

IMO the best measure would be since to use results since 1985 because that was when the 64 team field was introduced and teams needed to win 6 games to win the tournament. UCLA or any team like UCLA would never be able to win multiple national championships in today's era. Only one of Wooden's teams even had to win as many as 5 games to win the national championship and was the only time they won a national championship which had at large teams in the field. Imagine an NCAA Tournament where only one ACC team, one Big East team, one Big Ten team, etc made the NCAA Tournament, and one of the #3 seeds is the Mid American Champion. That's the kind of tournament UCLA won. There was an era Mike Krzyzewski made five consecutive Final Fours. Duke hasn't made the Final Four in back to back years since then. And you shouldn't just count national championships. UNLV won a national championship but what else have they done otherwise? And let's reward teams that have a lot of good years but never win like a Gonzaga. In college football, we never hear about a Gonzaga for two reasons.

I've posted about the best college basketball teams since 2010 and/or 2000. If I don't already have it, I can probably come up with the most NCAA Tournament wins since 1985 as well.

RE: College Basketball Tiers
Based on all-time NCAA tournament wins (not a bad criteria)...

Blue bloods:
Kentucky, UNC, Duke, Kansas and UCLA (schools that have over 105 wins)

Second tier (schools with 65-76 wins...there is a clear separation versus blue bloods):
Louisville, Michigan State, Syracuse, Indiana and Villanova

Third tier (42-61 wins):
Michigan, Connecticut, Ohio State, Arizona, Florida, Georgetown, Cincinnati, Arkansas, Maryland, Oklahoma and Purdue

That is a fairly solid top 20 (last 4 teams are tied). Hopefully in a few years, UVA will make the cut. That third tier is most subject to change...as schools can move up or down with a couple of exceptional tournament runs. There is also no separation between the 3rd tier and certain schools not on the list (e.g., Marquette, Illinois, Norte Dame, etc.).

That is a good way of breaking up the tiers.

My one quibble is putting UConn as third tier. They have four titles to several other schools' one. That includes Syracuse, who is in the tier ahead of UConn. Titles alone aren't everything. I recognize UConn isn't top tier ahead of three time champion Kansas due to the Jayhawks' longer, more consistent history. But they should at least be enough to tip the scales ahead of one-time champions.

The next tier I think you still need at least 2 championships to be part of.

UConn
Villanova
Louisville
Michigan State
Florida

After that its

Syracuse
Michigan
Arizona
Cincinnati
Georgetown

Programs after this either have one championship and no consistency or consistency but no championships. Like the Memphis, Maryland, Virginia, Gonzaga, Illinois, Wisconsin, Arkansas, ect

I'd put Indiana solidly below those others. They haven't been good in a long time. They've only had 4 Sweet Sixteens and 1 Elite Eight in the last quarter century.

That’s not an oversight at all. Gonzaga doesn’t fit any definition of blueblood. They have 2 NCAA appearances before Few.

Though they pretty much match UCLA in elite 8 and Sweet Sixteen numbers since 2000 and tie as a national runners up. I think UCLA has 1 more final four nod then Gonzaga. Though UCLA hasn't won a NCAA championship in 25 years. Most kids now haven't seen Gonzaga not in a NCAA tournament game. The 20 years Few has been in charge they could be considered a blue blood basketball school. Now they could drop off after he leaves but untill then the could recruit just as well as any other top tier school.

That means Gonzaga has been a better program than UCLA since 2000. That doesn't impact UCLA being a blueblood and Gonzaga fitting no criteria of a blueblood. A blueblood is old money; noble birth -- what you're discussing is entirely different from what a blueblood is.

Highest winning percentage in NCAA tournament competition (minimum 30 wins):

First tier:
Duke, UNC, UCLA, Kentucky and Florida (all over 70%)

Second tier:
Kansas, Michigan, Michigan State, Connecticut and Indiana (66%-70%)

Third tier:
Ohio State, Villanova, UNLV, Louisville, Wisconsin, Syracuse, Arizona, Georgetown, UVA and Maryland (61%-64% winning percentage)

If Kansas and Florida would flip, this would be a perfect list.

NCAA % inflates schools who miss the NCAA Tournament.

Switch NCAA % with NCAA wins and you get the blueblood list you're looking for:

Yeah, just not sure where to put Gonzaga. At present, they are a top 25 program.

I think Indiana has lost their blue-blood status. They have been mostly irrelevant since well before Knight left except for a fluke run under Mike Davis. UCONN deserves to be at the top of the second tier, even though at least one, maybe two of their titles are flukish. Louisville and Michigan state would be 3rd and fourth in my second tier. I'd put Florida in the third tier. They've won 2 titles but it was one team back to back, with one coach. You measure an elite program by championship numbers, with how many coaches, over how long a time
My picks, in order, except best of the rest..

Tier one: Kentucky, Duke, UCLA, UNC, Kansas

Tier two: UCONN, Indiana, Louisville, Michigan St, Villanova, NC State

Tier three: Syracuse, Michigan, Florida, Arizona

Best of the rest: Cincinnati, Memphis, Georgetown, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio State

Pretty good pairing of top 3 tiers, but Marquette needs to be up there.

A little different set of stats-sorted by NCAA bids with number of sweet 16s, eliete 8s, final 4s and championships. Roughly a top 50. It includes almost all the schools people are mentioning in this thread. Texas is #11 in tourney appearances. They had a long run under Rick Barnes. Marquette is tied for 12th and top 15 in sweet 16s. Ohio St., Michigan, NCSU and Florida are pretty well down the list.

I remember reading a couple years ago that an overwhelming % of the McDonald's All-Americans went to 5 schools. That would indicate that only blue schools are blue bloods-UK, UNC, Duke, KU, UCLA. That would put IU in that second tier.

Seems to me that most of you are primarily emphasizing NCAA Tournament success for your tier placements.

I look at many other metrics, including fan support/attendance, history of big-name coaches, players sent to the NBA, NIT history, heated rivalries for said program, well-known home arena, popularity with the general public/marketing/merchandising/brand, big wins on TV and recruiting successes.

I really wish that Indiana guard I believe his name was Kieth smart would had missed that miracle buzzer shot or if Derek Coleman could could hit free throws. Syracuse would have 2 Natties, SU dominated that game against Indiana. ??

I began following Indiana basketball staring at the beginning of the 1986-87 season, as my brother told the family in late 1986 he would be Bloomington bound to attend college.

I watched the entire 1987 title game. Syracuse was every bit as deserving of winning that game as IU. But to say the Cuse "dominated" ... The box score proves you wrong. It was a very even game statistically and simply came down to the last shot.

RE: College Basketball Tiers
My tiers - feel free to to criticize. My criteria was based upon historical NCAA Tournament success, historically sustained tournament success and historical overall number of bids. This is not a present ranking of where programs are today, which would obviously not be the same reflection.

Blue Bloods - Duke, UNC, Kentucky, UCLA, Kansas

Elites - Arizona, UConn, Indiana, Louisville, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Syracuse, Villanova

Upper Class - Arkansas, Cincinnati, Florida, Georgetown, Gonzaga, Illinois, Kansas State, Marquette, Maryland, NC State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, OK State, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin

Upper Middle Class - Butler, California, Houston, Iowa, LSU, Memphis, Oregon, Pittsburgh, Providence, Purdue, Stanford, Seton Hall, St. John's, Temple, UNLV, USC, Utah, Wake Forest, Washington, West Virginia

Rising Class - Alabama, Arizona State, Baylor, Boston College, BYU, Clemson, Colorado, Creighton, Dayton, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Iowa State, Miami, Minnesota, Missouri, St. Joseph, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Utah State, VCU, Wichita State, Xavier

Middle Class - UAB, Auburn, Charlotte, Davidson, Georgia, LaSalle, Loyola-IL, UMass, Miami (OH), Mississippi, Mississippi State, Oregon State, New Mexico State, Northern Iowa, Penn State, Rhode Island, Richmond, Rutgers, Saint Louis, San Diego State, San Francisco, SMU, St. Mary's, South Carolina, Tulsa, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, Washington State

Lower Middle Class - Ball State, Bradley, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Drake, Duquesne, EMU, Fordham, George Mason, George Washington, Kent State, LMU, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio, Pepperdine, Santa Clara, Southern Illinois, St. Bonaventure, TCU, Toledo, Valparaiso, Western Michigan

Out of respect for Lower Class and Basement-level programs, I will just stop there. But you get the idea...

Rankings of the teams on your list and some of the top teams from other lists, above, based on both the number of teams that finished in the Final AP Top 20, and the first year when the school had a final top 20 team is one way to compare the teams' "blue blood" status:

Been carrying that thought for a while now? Time to get over it.

And Indiana had one of the great college basketball teams of all time in 1975. But they lost in the ME finals by 2 to Kentucky who they had beat by 28 earlier in the season. That was their only loss in 2 years. Kentucky appeared on their way to the title after that, but John Wooden announced his retirement just before the final and that motivated his team to win the final.
