Interesting that the AP still uses the term IA instead of FBS. It's been 14 years.

Found the 1943 Louisiana team
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1943_Sou...tball_team
Quote: The 1943 Louis Whitman football team represents Southwestern Louisiana University, later known as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, in the 1943 college football season. The Bulldogs played their home games at McNaspy Stadium in Lafayette, Louisiana, and competed in the Louisiana Intercollegiate Conference, which saw no league play in 1943 because of World War II. They were led by second-year head coach Louis Whitman, compiled a record of 5–0–1, and outscored their opponents 172 to 40. In the 1944 Oil Bowl, the Bulldogs defeated Arkansas A&M on a muddy field, a team that had tied them 20–20 earlier in the season.
October 16 Fort Benning W 20-7
October 23 @ #11 Southwestern (TX) W 27-6
November 6 #17 Arkansas A&M T 20-20
November 13 Lake Charles Army Air Field W 75-0
November 27 @ Randolph Field W 6-0
OIL BOWL
January 1 Arkansas A&M W 24-7
Apparently the Boll Weevils and a private school named Southwestern were ranked teams that year.

Looked it up. Southwestern (Georgetown TX-now an Austin suburb-at one point an SWC member) was 4-0 and ranked 12th before the USL game. I remembered Randolph Field having some good teams, so that is actually why I looked it up. Randolph (San Antonio) was 9-0 and ranked 19 when they lost to USL. USL and Arkansas A&M both fell out of the rankings with the tie. They were #15 and #17.

I think there will be a ton of wild ass movements in the polls until mid October as there is so much uncertainty regarding who is actually any good this year.

So the SEC hasn't played a single down yet, but they have 8 teams in the Top 25, and three more receiving votes. The three schools that didn't get any votes must really suck.

Arkansas, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt
It just means more to the other 11.
Seriously get ready for fruit basket turnover weekly. Why is Kentucky #23? Because they play Auburn in the first week and games with ranked teams playing one another draw better ratings. The AP is about to become the best tool each week for hyping ranked teams. The fun part this year is there are no sure bets. It will probably wind up being far more entertaining that the last 5 seasons have been.

How do you get 62 sportswriters from all over the country conspire to hype a game? I can see how rigging the rankings could help ESPN or Fox. What's in it for the AP?

Duh! You don't have to. There are 39 P5 programs playing. For the first few weeks everyone that wins will climb in the polls and the number of ranked teams playing ranked teams will be higher this year due to only 39 programs competing and due to the fact that the SEC and ACC are mostly playing their own so the frequency will go up. By week 4 top G5 schools will be in the mix and climbing.
Sports writers read schedules and anticipate games and all of them are in the news business and you sell more newspapers, and you get more views for ranked teams playing so it's still in their self interest to promote ranked games.

With only 76 teams playing, then roughly 1/3rd will be ranked in the Top 25, and nearly 2/3rds will be included by the time all the "others receiving votes" are included.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a team with a losing record in the final top 25.

That is highly improbable with 76 teams playing.
