Please assign confidence points in accordance with the rules posted in the thread titled 2020 Pickem Contest. I can't alert you by PM because you have disabled that function. If I don't hear from you, I will assign 1 point for each game on the card, plus 1 additional point for the first 8 games (Syracuse through and including Arkansas State).

Against the spread, with confidence points (see separate thread titled 2020 Pickem Contest for rules).

A whole lot of people are picking all or most of the favorites to cover.

I think people have misunderstood - I thought the points were just there for information, I thought we were just picking winners and I picked accordingly. Just went back and changed half my picks, LOL.

And I don't know what "confidence points" are. Maybe KenD should do a re-set post with the rules.

RE: 2020 Pickem Contest Week 2
Reprint of rules posted earlier in case you missed them.

2020 Pickem Contest
Now that football has actually started, and we have a better idea who will be playing and who won’t, we can try to have the 2020 Pickem contest. Let’s hope the season goes on as planned so we don’t have to cut this short.

The format will be different from what we have used in the past, partly due to the limited number of games to choose from and partly because the limited number of games means we can’t just choose those with relatively small point spreads (that is, games that are expected to be close enough that everybody won’t make the same pick).

I will shoot for 12 games a week, trying to pick matchups that are likely to interest most of us. Occasionally, there may be fewer, but never more. Only games between FBS teams will be included.

We will be picking against the spread as established by the opening line. After Sunday, any line changes will be ignored so everyone is picking against the same spread no matter how early or late you submit your picks.

We will also be allocating “confidence points” to each game. There will be 20 points available each week, and you must allocate all of them. You must also allocate at least one point to each game.

For this week, I will not select any games played before Saturday. However, I may do so in the future, so check the betting lines early in the week so you don’t miss picking any games (which would count as a wrong pick).

There will be two winners in the season race. One for the player with the most points (wins X confidence points minus losses X confidence points) and one for the highest winning percentage without regard to confidence points (total wins/total games).

I will post the slate of games on the Realignment Board each week not later than noon on Monday (earlier if all point spreads have been established). Submit your picks as replies to that thread, identifying your expected winner and the confidence points you allocated for each game. No changes can be made after one half hour before each kickoff for weekday games and 11:30AM ET on Saturdays. Do not make any changes to your initial post, but rather in a separate post clearly marked as an EDIT.

RE: 2020 Pickem Contest Week 2
Due to any confusion I may have caused by not repeating the contest rules at the start of this post, we will consider this week's contest to be a "stand alone" exercise that won't count in the season race. Consider it a "shakedown cruise" to be sure we are all on the same page about the rules. Rep points will be awarded this week even though this is a dry run.

To respond directly to quo's question, confidence points are allocated based on how sure you are about your pick for each game. You can spread these around, or if you feel like one of your picks is a dead certain lock to cover the spread, you can assign up to 9 points (20 total points to be allocated minus the 1 point for each of the other 11 games on the 12 game card). If you picked correctly, you will get credit for as many wins as you allocated points. If your pick doesn't cover the spread, you will get as many losses as the points you allocated.

So, if you Pick Syracuse with 3 confidence points and Baylor with 1 point and the Orange covers but Baylor does not, you finish with a net of +2 points (+3 for Syracuse and -1 for Baylor). Most total net points each week (and for the season) wins.

You may edit the picks you already made if you weren't aware of the confidence point rules, or if you didn't realize we were not picking winners straight up, but rather against the point spread.

Thanks for clarifying.

FWIW, I think this week's results should count towards the yearly total. Everyone still has plenty of time to make the adjustments before tomorrow's kickoff.

RE: 2020 Pickem Contest Week 2
Participation rules are the same as last year. A player may skip one week without penalty, except that he may not skip either of the final two weeks of the season.

If a player has skipped more than one week, he is not eligible to win the season championship. He may, however, continue to play weekly contests, and earn rep points for those events.

Three rep points for 1st place and ties. Two points for second place and ties, and one point for third place. If there are two first place winners, the next place will be considered third place. If there are 3 tied for first, there will be no points awarded for second or third.

For the two season races rep points will be doubled for the top three finishers and ties.

I'm erring on the side of caution here, in case some who have made their picks don't check back into this thread until it is too late. When I post this week's results, any questions about how it is scored should be cleared up as well.

No, it isn't cheating. But pointing it out does point to a problem with the concept of assigning confidence points. In a normal year, cancellations and postponements are rare. But this is no normal year, and they may be frequent and last minute. As a result, not all players will wind up having allocated the same number of points in any given week. For that reason it may make sense to scrap that feature when the official Pickem "season" starts next week.

Unless there is a groundswell of support for retaining it, I will do just that, and announce it with the slate for next week's games. The upside of this is that it means a lot less work for me in running the contest.

Ken, I vote for doing this year like the old way (without confidence points)

Bring confidence points back for the bowl games

RE: 2020 Pickem Contest Week 2
We have a winner! Who could possibly have foreseen that our three time defending champion, Buckminster Fuller, would come out on top in the Shakedown Week of the 2020 Pickem? But he did, picking 7 of the 10 games that weren't postponed correctly. He also led in the Confidence Points category, with a +7 score (meaning he would have won money if we had actually been wagering).

Shannon Panther came in second in both categories, with 6 correct picks and +6 confidence points (thanks to a strong finish in the evening games with 7 points in the last two games on the card).

And then there were a bunch of 5-5 records, listed in order of their confidence point totals. First among equals was zibby, the only other player with a positive confidence score (+4), followed by Texan Mark (0 pts), copycat (-2), ChrisLords (-8), and Kaplony, who did not allocate points.

Next week, the "real" season will start. You did not have to play this week to be eligible to play in the season contest, and this week will not count as a skipped week for newcomers. We are starting over. In the season contest, we will not be allocating confidence points. But, since picking against the spread means we will probably be bunched up around .500 each week, we will need tiebreakers.

So, one game each week will be the Tiebreak Game. First tiebreak is: Did you pick the winner of that game. Second tiebreak is: Was your guess of the total points scored by both teams combined closest to the actual points scored. If we're still tied, each player will get the same number of rep points.

I'll probably wait until Monday evening to post the slate of games for each week in order to reduce the chances that one or more games on the card will be postponed or cancelled (we had 2 out of 12 this week).

Congratulations to our winners this week, and good luck to all as the regular season begins in Week 3.
