Vegas tends to underestimate some of the intangibles. Game One for a first time head coach against Will Healy starting his second year wanting to make a statement are two factors that should have produced a tighter line, IMO.

I'd be interested to see how APP does another year removed from Scott Satterfield. "It's the program, not necessarily the coach" is bad logic, I think, when you consider two of college football's best ever in Tennessee and Nebraska. Like Georgia Southern, it only takes one bad hire to sink a program.

I agree. I’m a lot more vocal about my worries than most App fans are. I think we’ve all convinced ourselves we won’t miss a beat but I don’t see how there aren’t some negative impacts from losing Satt and Drink in back to back seasons. We shall see. I hope coach Clark dominates and the Tweetsie Railroad App train keeps on chugging.

I will be shocked if Clark messes up the offense. I think you have one more year to coast off of what Satterfield built on that side of the ball. We'll find out after the first 2 games about your defense. I'm glad Davis-Gaither and Fehr are gone.

It is going to be interesting to see what happens in 2021. We will have to replace at least 3 of our starting O lineman if not 4, our QB, and all of our receivers unless Corey comes back. Thats going to be significant.

We always seem to just reload at WR and RB. Speed has never been a problem for us.

You know you have lost the argument when you have to insult another team's marketz.

How does the market argument even make sense anymore? It’s not 1984, I don’t need my school to be in Boston to have the Boston Globe writing articles about App State.

And it’s not like getting your games broadcast on local tv stations matters at all.

Your school could be on the moon. And if it’s winning football games, it’s gonna be on all the media streams that matter.

What am I missing with that argument?

And ODU is in Norfolk...

They aren’t even playing football this year, alienated themselves from conference members.

It’s pretty unusual to have somebody actually choose between the schools because they are in vastly different settings with different missions etc. For my part I never had any interest in UNCC, and I can understand why someone who likes UNCC wouldn’t have an interest in App.

That’s interesting and fairly in line with what I understand it to be. I could absolutely see why a kid from a rural high school would choose a UNCC over spending 4 years in Boone. Or really anyone looking to live in a large, dynamic city like Charlotte.

Academics aside I chose App because I like to fly fish and ski and loved the feel of a true college town that was walkable.

The only time I really drove my car at App was to head home to Charlotte on long weekends.

Yah we often said the hardest decision we had to make at App was if we were going to: hike, MTB, fly fish, kayak, rock climb, swim, golf or just day drink on any given day from April to November.

I’ve never lived in a smal town outside of Boone, but I’ve never understood the appeal of Charlotte for an 18 year old on a typical college student budget. There really isn’t that much to do (this is subjective) where you don’t have to drive 30+ minutes or spend a bunch of $$. Now I totally get the appeal and nice you graduate and have more disposable income.

Oh well. Can’t wait for the game. I really hope we hammer them and keep CUSA down in the basement where it belongs.

yeah thats the hope. Just never can tell 1st game. I do think its good that our team seems to remember the disappointment with the game last year so hopefully we decide to put them away early.

We should beat them soundly. I’ll be disappointed if we don’t.

I can live with losing to UNCC if they were a capable program. So far they haven’t proven to be. If by 2030 when we see them, they are coming off 10+ win seasons and beat us, so be it. That’s well deserved in my opinion and I’ll applaud them for it. Honestly.

As it stands they are a team coming off a 7 win season in a borderline FCS conference.

Well, that’s a stretch imho... Our top is comparable but these days our bottom is worse. I don’t think there is an argument for that. Like I said on our board, I am excited to see where the Belts best and CUSAs best (arguably) stack up.

That’s the thing, most of the time it’s your best vs ours or vice versa... now we will see. Win or lose, I hope for a good clean game.

Don’t take it as a slight against Marshall. I respect your program immensely and loved watching y’all play on Saturday. So excited to play you all in 2 weeks.

But CUSA’s western division finished closer in parity to the FCS Missouri Valley Conference than it did to the next closest FBS conference, the lowly MAC East. That’s half the teams in your conference basically comparable to Missouri State, Northern Iowa and Southern Illinois (Go Salukis). And if MTSU is any indication, the CUSA East might be a cakewalk for you all.

https://www.usatoday.com/sports/ncaaf/sa...onference/

I also lurk Herdfans. And see a large portion of your own fans in favor of jumping ship from CUSA to the MAC despite the Tuesday/Wednesday games. That’s pretty telling.

That said, I’m a results guy. If App stinks I’ll be the first to admit it. If CUSA or UNCC or whoever starts dominating I’ll own it. Until then I’ve grown tired of the ODU’s and UNCC’s of the world telling me how good they will be one day because their city has 500,000 people living in it. Sorry, it doesn’t work that way. Unless CUSA stands for Census-USA.

Man, you’re preaching to the choir. The west outside of UAB and LaTEch is not good. And honestly, we have stomped it flat at least once a year that is costly. We have a qb now that I think can be Catoesque... just by watching his skills. But, he wasn’t pressured which Appalachian is sure to do. So like you, In am excited to see where we stand. I honestly think we beat Boise with this kid. Time will tell though.

And no, most Marshall fans do not want to go back to the MAC. We don’t want MACtion and it just isn’t a cultural fit. I think many are hoping for a schism and realignment, but I won’t go down that rabbit hole.

I know it’s tiresome to hear about the UNCC and ODU bravado, but don’t let that discourage you all from coming over and talking ball. Like I said on our board, I have great respect for App...

I appreciate that but I’ll pass. I’m able to have pretty interesting conversations on the MAC and AAC boards, but that CUSA board is a waste of time. I made the mistake of engaging with an ODU fan and you know that old saying about arguing with fools. Unfortunately there’s very few like you on that board.

Thanks for the tip on the rivals board I’ll check it out. Can’t wait to play y’all next week, should be a barn burner. Cheers!

I hope ASU wins this one. It will be weird without fans. I saw some of the weirdness on the CUSA board about changing conferences/etc to become relevant, but I'm fine with App staying in the Sun Belt as long as our record and product on the field continue to draw the attention of ESPN, etc. I am patient enough to realize a few years in FBS with the winning record we have is greater than being in any other conference. There is no reason for a school from Boone, NC to be in the ACC, AAC, SEC, etc. I'm cool with that as long as school from those conferences schedule us. In the instances we meet in bowl games, those school will lose. App, in our FBS infancy, is getting recognition for losing tight games against the big schools while dominating G5 competition. I'm cool with that. I also want UNC@C to kick ass this year. I get it everyone hates one another in these times of social media /political hatred based on internet anonymity. In truth I've never met a fan of any UNC@C teams. Let's not troll and just watch the product on the field.

Fair enough, but please come over for the App vs Marshall thread when it’s posted. And if not I understand... but I’d like to post here on your board if that’s okay. Like I said, most Herd fans have a solid respect for App and others in the Belt.

I was a freshman in 2001, so didn't ever learn to hate the herd. I do remember listening to a game between little ol' us and Marshall in 2001 on the radio knowing ya'll were big time and we should likely lose. We lost. I hope to score 2 tickets to our game this year.
