Should be an interesting game to gauge how App adjusts losing half of its defense and Clark leading the team officially.

Both offenses should be able to move the ball as this games features two stables of WRs (even without Sutton for App) and upper tier G5 QBs.

No fans in the stands and a brand new field so no real home field advantage.

App will likely be favored by a couple scores, I predict what ever to the line is bet UNCC as it will likely be too high and quickly come down.

It’ll be interesting for sure. I think most App fans predicted the 2020 team as > 2019 team, but you just don’t know, and the results of the favored teams so far hasn’t inspired any confidence.

I’m glad this was started. We were asked by the UNCC fans not to post on the CUSA thread so this will have to be the location for discussion.

What’s the current line? Last I saw it was -20.5 but I think that’s a little optimistic. Especially after what we saw this weekend with the big lines for Memphis/Ark State and SMU/Texas State.

I’ll be real curious to see how our linebackers manage.

Apparently we have our own “lowly Sun Belch” board from which to talk about the football game.

I dunno it was some pretty comical gatekeeping. I’ll never understand the “wHy ArE yOu EvEn PoStInG hErE?” mentality? Hopefully their fans and any others are welcome to post over here. Even if it’s just banter.

Nothing crazy. This might help:

UNCC is La Tech, except they haven’t accomplished nearly what La Tech has. You also have to imagine that La Tech fans spent most of their time talking about how they were the ACCs #1 target for expansion.

Now, if you follow all that, imagine trying to have a realistic two way conversation with this group, it devolves quickly. especially when the “lower” team is favored by 3 tds

What’s funny is I actually want to see them do well. And even if you are able to establish a decent conversation with one of them about their football program, suddenly another one runs in from no where and starts telling you how “small of a market Boone is” or inevitably devolves into academics (which I’ve always found quite strange) or something else clearly inflammatory with no real purpose.

Some child ODU fan, unprompted, started calling me a hillbilly and telling me how horrible the sun belt is and how App will never accomplish anything. When I reminded him of our last two games he called me a troll.

Strange lot over there. I like that CLT guy though.

To be fair, you and Saint try hard to be reasonable over there, and I just rouse the rabble, because there’s no point in your attempts. As I’ve learned with toddlers, trying to have a rational conversation is just counterproductive.

I will say, UNCC fans are “fanatics” in the purest sense. All of the superiority histrionics without any tangible results on the field to back it up. The smugness of an elite private school with the admission standards of a second tier state school. No shame in admitting that I’m envious of their almost childlike quality of ignoring reality

Vegas tends to underestimate some of the intangibles. Game One for a first time head coach against Will Healy starting his second year wanting to make a statement are two factors that should have produced a tighter line, IMO.

I'd be interested to see how APP does another year removed from Scott Satterfield. "It's the program, not necessarily the coach" is bad logic, I think, when you consider two of college football's best ever in Tennessee and Nebraska. Like Georgia Southern, it only takes one bad hire to sink a program.

The academics part is by far the most puzzling to me. I applied to UNCC as a fallback in the event I didn’t get into Carolina and App. UNC deferred me, and I got into App and UNCC, choosing App out of preference.

Mind you this was in the early 2000’s so maybe? things have changed, but virtually everyone I went to high school with in my Charlotte suburb applied to UNCC as the “place I’ll go if I don’t get into my actual school of choice”.

Which isn’t to say UNCC is a “bad” school. I’m sure it’s a fine institution. I’m just puzzled by the superiority complex.

But I digress...

I agree. I’m a lot more vocal about my worries than most App fans are. I think we’ve all convinced ourselves we won’t miss a beat but I don’t see how there aren’t some negative impacts from losing Satt and Drink in back to back seasons. We shall see. I hope coach Clark dominates and the Tweetsie Railroad App train keeps on chugging.

My wife is a teacher at a very high performing Union County school, and it has changed a bit. She thinks UNCC is more popular than it used to be, but it’s not App level. She says kids that used to get into App are now being deferred etc and are choosing UNCC over ECU and uncg or whatever. It’s pretty unusual to have somebody actually choose between the schools because they are in vastly different settings with different missions etc. For my part I never had any interest in UNCC, and I can understand why someone who likes UNCC wouldn’t have an interest in App.

I will be shocked if Clark messes up the offense. I think you have one more year to coast off of what Satterfield built on that side of the ball. We'll find out after the first 2 games about your defense. I'm glad Davis-Gaither and Fehr are gone.

What Dale Jones does on defense may be more critical.

That’s interesting and fairly in line with what I understand it to be. I could absolutely see why a kid from a rural high school would choose a UNCC over spending 4 years in Boone. Or really anyone looking to live in a large, dynamic city like Charlotte.

Academics aside I chose App because I like to fly fish and ski and loved the feel of a true college town that was walkable.

The only time I really drove my car at App was to head home to Charlotte on long weekends.

I'm not worried about Jackson, Cobb, Roof, or Bird in the middle. All have proven experience and will fill in nicely. Outside linebacker is the big question for us.

It is going to be interesting to see what happens in 2021. We will have to replace at least 3 of our starting O lineman if not 4, our QB, and all of our receivers unless Corey comes back. Thats going to be significant.
