Board of Trustee Meeting Sept 2nd: New Fund Raising Campaign
Sounds like a monster fund raising campaign was approved yesterday at the board meeting. Normally these only go public, once 50% or more has been secured/committed. Any idea when the details will be shared? Is there a website where board meeting notes or ppt are shared for public viewing?

“The board also approved the leadership phase of a $600 million fundraising campaign to be divided equally between philanthropy and research grants.“

RE: Board of Trustee Meeting Sept 2nd: New Fund Raising Campaign
This isn’t the “going public” phase. This is just the approval of the leadership phase which means that this thing is just getting started.

It will be $300 million philanthropic and $300 million for sponsored research. Target date for the public phase is 2023 with campaign completion in 2026.

A big positive here is that they identified between $42-56 million in potential gifts just from the 47 donors they interviewed to assess the feasibility of the campaign. That’s a pretty nice chunk of the $300 million philanthropic goal.

I remember when we were celebrating reaching 100M fundraising efforts. Great to see this.

Thank you for sharing. I listened to the audio, but no details were shared about the campaign. I believed they referenced and internal presentation. Any ideas if/when that will be public? $600M will be transformative for the UofM. Also, the speaker referenced utilization for research - academia - athletics.

Taking the fact that this is our alma matre out of it, $600M is an asinine amount money to be corralling out of the economy for use in higher education. I mean, we gotta do it to keep up with the Joneses, but all this inevitably does is raise the price of college tuition. It "feeds the beast" so to speak.

Its usually over a very long period of time (likely a decade).. think of it more like $60-80M a year.. and half of that is in research grants which generally have either a specific purpose or are focused on valuable basic research.. so really just $30-40m per year "out of the economy" (whatever that means). For context the big boys like Harvard/Stanford are in the $8-10 Billion range over a decade in their most recent campaigns and thats all philanthropic

Yes it is, but the whole movie is a comedy classic.

I still watch Kinison and Dangerfield videos on YouTube.

How much is truly coming out of the economy though? Probably not much of the $300 million in sponsored research. Your guess is as good as mine on the philanthropic gifts. If Fred Smith gives a hefty donation is that really money he would otherwise be spending on buying stuff that propels the economy? Or is he just selling off some FedEx shares?

Fair points.
