So, this is not really sports related but reading the article above made me think of AJ Edu and the story of how he became a citizen of the Philippines. Edu was born (and raised) in Cyprus, which is a small EU island country in the Mediterranean. After birth his middle class professional Nigerian and Filipina parents applied for his citizenship papers but were denied even though they were legal employed residents of Cyprus. Clearly, there was a racist double standard as Cyprus was their home and their Cypriot born and raised kids should be citizens too. As a result they had to scramble in AJ's early years to find a country that would provide him citizenship so that he could travel and be a documented person with full rights. The government of the Philippines worked with his mom to complete paperwork and eventually made him a Filipino citizen. This is why he plays for the Philippines national team program.

The article linked above shows how Cyprus has had a long time covert passport selling program to shady business people and criminals in search of EU access passports. So, while they wouldn't give AJ citizenship, they were willing to give it to rich crooks that didn't live in Cyprus, much less were born there.

where did the racism come in? Jus Soli, birthright citizenship is not a very widespread right. Mostly the Americas. Were either of his parents citizens of Cyprus? If not, what happened over ten years ago (parents moved to England) might not be too relevant to Cyprus selling passports to crooks. No indication they care the race of the crook, only that they have a couple million dollars. And I don't think they'd be the only country where you can buy citizenship. I seem to recal Canada selling citizenships for a million to people trying to get out of Hong Kong before the Chinese hand-over. That turned into a win-win for Canada as they not only got the upfront cash but an influx of managment and tech talent that has had a major effect on their economy..

60 minutes had a story a few years ago about Cyprus selling citizenship papers, to mostly criminals, who wanted a new passport to move around the world.
