I have a question for the forum... the Reds announcer let loose this homophobic slur on a hot mic yesterday.
Let's say this guy loses his job over this. Do you consider him a victim of cancel culture?
I personally wouldn't in that he said something completely horrific while at work. This reflects poorly on his company and his bosses.
Would anybody have a problem with this guy losing his job over this? I have been reading that this guy has no chance in the setting of cancel culture gone wild. I think this goes way beyond cancel culture but I was curious about other opinions.
I think his firing gravitates to the understandable ---
If this was he said in private, then yes it would be cancel culture.
He said it in a manner that reflected directly on his employer. And imo an employer should have very wide latitude to deal with whom *they* wish to do business with and whom *they* employ, *especially* when it comes to the business setting.
Had he said the same thing that disparaged any group of people ('bunch of redneck deplorables') then that employer has a wide berth to deal with that type of situation.
But I also realize that I view the right of doing business in a far more expansive manner and more liberal manner than most. 'Liberal' in the classical laissez faire meaning that is.
Anyone has a right to run their business as unobtrusive as they wish, or as ardent as they wish. They also have the broad right to attract business, or to act dumb and chase away business, almost as much as they please.
I think that the idea of 'cancel culture' is more problematic when it comes to directly targeting and intentionally trying to silence broad political beliefs. Being conservative is not a fundamental basis for outrage, nor is stating 'All blue lives matter', or for matter wearing a MAGA hat. But to many these are fundamental reasons to get someone fired. Which in that case, reflects far more horribly about being open to ideas on the people trying to 'silence through firing'. That is why modern progressives are earning the monikers 'Maoists' and 'Jacobins', since the above *are* sufficient for being doxed and fired in at least more than a couple of instances.
