Cancel culture question
I have been on record saying that I think cancel culture is out of control and that the ability to voice opposing viewpoints is important.

I have a question for the forum... the Reds announcer let loose this homophobic slur on a hot mic yesterday.

Let's say this guy loses his job over this. Do you consider him a victim of cancel culture?

I personally wouldn't in that he said something completely horrific while at work. This reflects poorly on his company and his bosses.

Would anybody have a problem with this guy losing his job over this? I have been reading that this guy has no chance in the setting of cancel culture gone wild. I think this goes way beyond cancel culture but I was curious about other opinions.

Cancel Cancel Culture!

I have no problem with a firing under this particular circumstance.

A lot of people get off with an apology. How do we decide which people must be punished for life and which just need to mumble a mea culpa?

Serious question. When Biden says something racist, he is give a pass, or he make a "clarification". I just would like to see equal transgressions met with equal punishments - or equal nonpunishments.

I think his firing gravitates to the understandable ---

If this was he said in private, then yes it would be cancel culture.

He said it in a manner that reflected directly on his employer. And imo an employer should have very wide latitude to deal with whom *they* wish to do business with and whom *they* employ, *especially* when it comes to the business setting.

Had he said the same thing that disparaged any group of people ('bunch of redneck deplorables') then that employer has a wide berth to deal with that type of situation.

But I also realize that I view the right of doing business in a far more expansive manner and more liberal manner than most. 'Liberal' in the classical laissez faire meaning that is.

Anyone has a right to run their business as unobtrusive as they wish, or as ardent as they wish. They also have the broad right to attract business, or to act dumb and chase away business, almost as much as they please.

I think that the idea of 'cancel culture' is more problematic when it comes to directly targeting and intentionally trying to silence broad political beliefs. Being conservative is not a fundamental basis for outrage, nor is stating 'All blue lives matter', or for matter wearing a MAGA hat. But to many these are fundamental reasons to get someone fired. Which in that case, reflects far more horribly about being open to ideas on the people trying to 'silence through firing'. That is why modern progressives are earning the monikers 'Maoists' and 'Jacobins', since the above *are* sufficient for being doxed and fired in at least more than a couple of instances.

I don't know.

Archie Bunker said that about England: "England is a f#g country."

You can still find that TV clip on YouTube. So I guess that means it's not hate speech?

And I'm not trying to defend what he said but, what if the announcer had used the term "gay" or "LGBT" or .....

Or what if he had said, "This city has a thriving gay/LGBT/???? community"?

One thing's for sure, he won't be replaced by Norm McDonald.

He has been fired

Not sure why he wasn't just allowed to apologize, like movie stars, .320 hitters, and Democrat politicians are.

Duh, no. Just to repeat myself as the first time wasn't clear to you, I'm not defending what he said.

I asked what happens if you change one word. Or if you put a 'positive' slant on what you say regardless of what is said.

I just Googled his slur and yes it's bad. How bad?

Firing the guy seems a bit extreme, but maybe he should be flogged in public as well.

What if he had said, "This is one of the termite capitals of the world" (a la Farrakhan)?

Do you think the firing is justified and, if so, should it be applied universally and retrospectively?

Cancel culture isn't about making people accountable, it's about making people toxic.

In a perfect cancel culture this guy will never work again. Is that your idea of utopia?

No, the guy should not be fired. An apology would be sufficient.

No, the penalty for wrongthink should not be applied universally. that just takes us to Orwell's 1984.

I think life sentences for mis-utterances are way too draconian.

But it is part of the leftist culture that nothing is worse than _____ism, and it must be treated not as an opinion but like leprosy in Biblical times.

If it was the right calling the shots on what speech is permissible, it would rightly be called fascism.

But when the left acts in a fascist manner, it is lauded.

I don't agree with what he said. But I think firing him is an overreaction.

JMHO.

Should have used the more respectful "Kamala the Sl**" phrasing.

I wonder if this guy was equally harsh with his language regarding Trump and his notoriously philandering ways...

There is a big difference. Whatever "philandering" Trump did was not for the purpose of advancing his personal career.

RE: Cancel culture question
Here is where I come down on this....

Media like many industries is driven by 'customers'. If 'whatever an employee did', even if it were 100% legal drives customers away, that can contribute to a case for firing, up to the point of being immediately actionable... i.e. an executive of an aggressive animal rights group going hunting.

My problem with cancel culture is that it doesn't depend merely on people doing things that ACTUALLY drive away business... but on actions by others intended to also drive away business, like blockading a drive through... which can make people simply decide that it's not worth it. They are therefore NOT declining to frequent that store because of what was said, but because they simply didn't want to go through the hassle. Social media has made this an almost certainty... where if nothing else, people may be subject to online ridicule and even death threats because people can take a picture of them entering the store and others can doxx them by cross referencing it through facebook or whatever.... and let's be honest, lots of people seem to have lots of time to try and make themselves feel better by sometimes perhaps literally irl attacking people they don't know, nor have any reason to care, often over situations where they also don't know enough to draw conclusions.

I hang out in pretty vulgar and non-PC environments. That word has been retired a while ago. Can't use it.

100% agree with the firing. Can't use that word. Terrible judgement letting stuff like that fly in the studio even without the use of that specific word. If he is good, he will get another lesser profile job in due time. He is older, so he is probably just screwed completely of getting back to pro announcing.

I do think the "nuggets" guy probably deserves a free pass here. I had a "new" phone once that was obviously refurbished as the auto-correct dictionary had all sorts of interesting suggestions that made even me blush.

Your continued reliance on the rhetorical question of asking what if the guy had said “this is the :insert non degrading slur here: capitals of the world” makes it seem like you dont understand the difference.

My comment is unrelated to whether he should or shouldn’t be fired, but to why the comment was inappropriate in the first place. Do you not know whether his comment would have been appropriate if a word or two had changed?

Even when he thinks he is talking to himself? We are getting perilously close to thought control there.

It seems we have moved from “you cannot yell fire in a crowded theatre” to you cannot use the word “fire”. It is a forbidden word.

Lots of people say something over a hot mic or a hidden mic that they absolutely would never say out loud to the public. I am thinking of “Tell Vladimir I can be more flexible after the election”.

Others say worse and are allowed to get off with an apology.

I thought everybody loved Barbara Bush.

So much hate from the left.

"At some point, all of us in the literary community must DEMAND that white editors resign," wrote Jarrar, according to Campus Reform.

Nothing racist there. Nothing at all.

Every time I see BS like this I think of this clip, from the then-left-wing Repo Man film:

The irony is that the left used to be in the ballpark on the same page as most others, but with a different perspective on how to do things. This clip was produced by a left-wing Hollywood that has been replaced by socialists/communists and anarchists. As Ronald Reagan famously said: "I didn't leave the Democratic Party-they left me."
Today's left has no concept of humor, artistic license and allowable slips and the occasional faux-paux. growing up, we played in the yard games like Kick the Can and smear the queer. everyone knew what a sissy was, and no one wanted to be one. Today's beta-myn are a sad excuse. But I guess they like butt-pats more than a$$-kicking these days, to go along with their shelves full of participation trophies. God help us when this country has to fight a real war against China when they come calling.

Yeah, screw those kids who were given participation trophies by adults - it’s their fault for having been raised by a generation that felt the need to give them participation trophies!

I always find this the weirdest line of attack on Millenials, as it completely ignores the fact that Boomers (and some early Gen Xers) were the ones who made two major mistakes we’re dealing with - creating a participation trophy culture and devaluing skilled labor jobs (encouraging all their kids to go to college).
