NCAA recommends preserving year of eligibility for fall 2020 athletes

Well, this will be interesting if it gets approved on Friday. As i've written elsewhere, it means you would have as many as 110 scholarships instead of 85 once the 2021 recruiting class shows up. Affordability of this plus Covid testing becomes a real hardship.

It also means you could have 60 to 80 freshmen on your team instead of the usual 30 to 40, so that becomes a real challenge from a coaching and development standpoint.

Finally, once you're at 110 scholarships how do you get back to 85? They'll need to either allow teams to cut guys or restrict new schollys to 20 or less each year for several years in order to get there.

If the MAC plays any kind of short season in spring, 2021 it sure would be tempting to use it as purely developmental time. Play tons of young guys, try new things, mix and match. Financially strapped conferences like the MAC might be wise to just play a four or five game developmental schedule, like NFL preseason. Have an open week between each game. If any teams are too broke to do that they could opt out and do spring practice instead, or play two games instead of four.

I think you are right about trying to have some sort of season as I can't see how a schools like NIU will be able to fund that many more scholarships. The rumor was that someone else posted was that the MAC might not be able to fund even a spring season.

I can't imagine it being that costly to make a schedule where it is strictly the closest schools to you by bus and see if NIU could find a sponsor that would be interested in being the of the entire "team" for the 2020 season. I'm sure the NCAA would be open to allowing different sponsor opportunities (maybe something on the jerseys just for this year because of COVID). Just ideas.

RE: NCAA recommends preserving year of eligibility for fall 2020 athletes
The NCAA approved the extra year of eligibility for everyone so here come the big rosters as of 2021. The competition at the freshman level should be strong to say the least. This means Ethan Hampton and Dustin Fletcher are now in the same class, for example. Tajheem Lawson and whatever other freshman running backs who arrive in 2021 will be in the same class as Jay Ducker, Nazareth Bryant, Donovan Bieber, Harrison Waylee and Vondarious Gordon who joined the team this year but will still be considered true freshmen in 2021. Whatever offensive linemen join the team in 2021 will be in the same class as the eight freshmen who joined the team this year. Same for every position.
