Upwards of 575,000 people died in the US from H1N1 swine flu in the US. and those deaths weren’t inflated like COVID’s have been.

We all know that facts aren’t something you’re big on, but let’s not compare all (aka worldwide) H1N1 deaths in year one with the amount of Covid deaths that have occurred in 5 months in the US.

I wonder if we were signaled that it's coming and got out in front for PR reasons. A lot of people are genuinely afraid. This could really play well on the recruiting trail. Nothing like a disaster to spin positive PR out of? That sounds calculated and cold but it's realty.

I saw this and thought exactly that.

US deaths were 12,469 per CDC website.

This is the right decision for our athletes. Unfortunately, while most healthy 20 years olds will survive covid, the truth is we don't know what the long term effects are on the rest of the body systems. What happens to the first-round draft pick who catches covid and has permanently reduced lung capacity because of it? He sues the school for what he thinks he would have made in the league. The liability for the schools would far outweigh the lost revenue from canceling this season. Don't talk to me about waivers. Any decent attorney could get that tossed.

I hope things are better in the spring and that can possibly play a spring season.

Or a heart condition. Its gonna suck to not have football, but its the right decision.

And the deaths from H1N! are obviously not comparable. It was more dangerous for younger people, while this is more dangerous for older people.......but COVID is far deadlier than the Swine Flu

The heart condition can be a byproduct of several different viral infections, but it seems to be cropping up more with covid.

I remember H1N1 well. That was the year VBCPS offered vaccinations for it through the schools.

I suspect basketball will go according to schedule. After all, the election is November 3. That's what this is all about.

Basketball with start in January. Only conference play presumably. Of course, nothing to do with elections.

UConn WBB coach Geno Auriemma said Monday he's prepared for a long wait until the start of college hoops season, which he thinks will be delayed.

Definitely disappointed as a fan, but this is probably for the best. It will look wise especially if/when the P5s start the closure chain reaction.

What happens here on the bbs? Do we go all-in on the hobby threads? Start our own eSports league? Go live normal non-bbs lives?

Does anyone think that ODU’s decision to cancel was partly due to the fact of the limit of 50 people for gatherings here in Hampton Roads?

Also, with the season being cancelled, what happens to the years of eligibility for current players?

1. Probably didn't help, though I doubt there was ever going to be clearance for crowds of more than, say, 500 this year.

2. That's a good question. If a substantial fall football season takes place, who knows if the NCAA will allow the conscientious objecters another year of redshirts. On the other hand, they look bad if they punish schools for making decisions in the best interest of the health of their players and coaches and school just because a bunch of schools in hotspots went forth as though little had changed.

Our minor league soccer team is allowing 1,000 at the small football stadium at York High School.

RE: ODU Will Not Play Athletics This Fall, Postpones Fall Sports
If CUSA plays, and the presidents reaffirmed their commitment today to play without ODU, it could be the best thing to happen to the conference in years. Multiple national TV games against P5s, a lot more press per school. If, and it’s a big if, the teams stay healthy and pull it off, it could wind up great for the G5 schools (present company excluded of course). My current guess is Wood realized CUSA presidents were going to vote to play, he had his mind made up not to play already. He realized he wasn’t going to get to blame it on CUSA so he just went ahead and cancelled us. We should know if it was wise, or the worst choice in ODU sports history within 2 months. Could go either way.

I feel sorry for all the teams but especially Women's Volleyball. This will be what 2 years that they have been waiting for their first match. Sad.

Looks like the Big 10 is waffling and may play after all. Twitter is saying they may delay rather than cancel now. AAC also saying they will play. Man, I hope we didn’t screw this up. Though I guess if we are still practicing. We could change our minds. Also. Do we now owe WF and the CUSA schools buy outs for not following through with our games since they’re playing?

If CUSA does play the F_Us won't have any problem in limiting the crowds in the stands and will have an excuse.

Does that carry for Southside? I know Richmond's minor-league soccer team also caps at 1,000. I presumed Norfolk/Virginia Beach would be more strict with the higher case numbers.

I think even if everyone else reneged on not playing, ODU would look worse by walking back a decision ostensibly made with the interests of their students and community in mind because of the pressure of keeping up with the Joneses. There's still two G5 conferences and UConn shutting down fall ball and I think ultimately the Big Ten pulls the trigger once cooler heads prevail, with the Pac 12 following suit.
