Will we survive?
I know there's not much to talk about (and not much excitement anyway) in regards to the upcoming season, but I did want to discuss this.

Will we survive if football is cancelled this year? I know we're already one of the poorest athletic departments in the country, so I'm concerned we may be dropping from D1 without revenue from the sport that literally funds everything else we have.

But I won't pretend to be privy on insider information regarding our finances outside of what is widely reported and known. Does anyone else know more than I do?

In my opinion the short answer is No. We have no leadership at USM and the budget is already horrible.

My bigger fear is a lot of the P5 conferences are announcing conference only schedules. It could be the prelude to them agreeing to only play P5 competition going forward.

Your question implies we were alive before this. My personal feeling is we were dead before the last conference realignment - otherwise we wouldn't be where we are. I suppose it's all relative though, and how you define "death" and "survival".

RE: Will we survive?
Short answer, no.

Long answer,
It has been dead. I have been a fan my entire life and have had zero desire to go to Hattiesburg to watch a game against UTSA, UAB, whoever for the last couple of years. The biggest goal to root for is a CUSA title (and who cares about that).

But to be fair, i can see the SEC booting state or ole miss in the coming years and they will be in the exact same boat. Probably worse since Hattiesburg is the best college town in the state.

RE: Will we survive?
Well, the SEC has agreed to a conference only season. So there goes our money game with Auburn. But we'll still have to pay Hopson and staff, plus travel expenses to Denton, TX, El Paso, TX, Bowling Green, KY and Lynchburg, VA. I imagine in some way we'll survive to next season if things return to normal, but we'll probably be on life support.

The point made by Bleacher Eagle is very valid. With the Power 5 conferences playing only conference games, it could be the catalyst to rejecting the status quo. I could see them seeing a shortened season as a good thing. The obstacle to an expanded playoff has been the 12 game seasons. They may figure they can have a shortened season and an expanded 16 or 32 team playoff scenario (power conference teams ONLY). And even if they don't, they may decide to play a power conference only OOC schedule. If anything like that happens it will essentially be the death of Southern Miss football. At least the way most people have historically viewed it. If we were in a position that we never played a power conference team again, I see fan support vanishing. It wouldn't surprise me if average attendance was 5000 or less. The Group of Five teams will be the new FCS.

I don’t see the P5 surrendering two home games each (and the revenue that comes with it) for a mild chance they may make the playoff (80% of P5 teams don’t have a chance). I also don’t see P5 teams stopping buy games, as 60% need them to pad their records and make bowls.

I don't see how the flagship schools don't break off and form an entire entity devoid of the NCAA...

the leftovers will align as required...

The 2 regular season games wouldn't matter. I'm sure with a bigger playoff system there would be so much money in that, the money would be shared in a way that they would all end of with more money than the 2 games bring. Attendance has been dropping for everyone - not just the little guys. So, they'd give up the revenue of 2 home games for a share of the playoff money. Also - it probably won't be 2 home games anyway if they decide to play P5 teams in OOC schedule. They'd have to travel for one of those game which means travel cost for one. They'll gladly sit at home and watch the other teams play and get a check.

The rumblings have started. Should the NCAA call off fall championships, the P5 are discussing having their own because calling off everything but football isn’t viable and they’re by gosh going to play football because of that mountain of money:

lol....why do I need a university for such....

Update on the Pac-12 situation.

Per Football Scoop, a separate press release attached the names of 12 players from 9 schools to this.

i love the SEC conference only schedule. I hope MSU and Ole Miss enjoy those 3-7 4-6 records. They will never have another winning season if the P5 breaks away and they only play P5 schedules. Also Monken eluded to this his last year here if i remember correctly.
