Jones was on a Zoom call last week with some ODAF members. Some of these are my OPINIONS:
1. They are done with recruiting for this year, unless someone falls into their lap. He said the focus is on 2021 and they are involved with a lot of players. First time in his life he has ever offered a scholarship to a kid with being there in person, but he has watched as much film as he can possibly get his hands on on everyone they are involved with, probably more than the norm. He also has spent more time on the phone with recruits than usual, forging better, deeper relationships than the norm.
2. From what he's heard, Ezipke and Reece worked out together in ATL for part of the time. Ezipke appears to have matured and come to realize that he has the ability to be all-CUSA and has set himself to doing that. Reece is tremendously talented and will be better this year, but Zip can take them over the top (my words)
3. 4 or 5 guys spent lots of time on campus, including the D-2 transfer who went to Jones and asked if there wasn't some way they could get MORE time in the gym. The coaches made it happen, within NCAA constraints
4. While it took Curry a while to acclimate last year, now that he has he is determined to be an elite player in CUSA and has worked his ass off this summer. Tremendous dedication. Among the others, X is busting ass, too. Not happy with the way last season went for him. I honestly can't remember the other kids who have been around this summer
5. Covensky (?) and JJ give virtual tours of the campus to recruits and the recruits seem very impressed and like the setup. Covensky drives the golf cart and handles the I-pad while JJ talks about what they are seeing. Oddity: They can show the outside of the Ted but not the inside. Makes no sense to me.
6. They have $60,000 reserved for a trip next summer to Yugoslavia, but aren't going to take that trip. Instead they'll continue to play as many in-state games as possible and play the Arkansas/Syracuse type game once a year. Tells me money is tight. Not a surprise.
I guess that's. This is the second time I've had contact with Jones. I don't think he's sitting at home counting his money. FWIW, he thinks they're going to be good to very good this year, but every fan knows they all say that. He did say that the troubles of last season brought everyone much closer together, a feeling that will carry over to this season. Paraphrase: "These guys know we're not the enemy and that all we want is for what's best for them. There's a tremendous, true sense of love between the coaches and players." And, yes, love is the word he used.
Oh, the annual 12-22 game will be against either CNU or VA Wesleyan. It's a win and it doesn't hurt the NET like playing an MEAC-type team does.
Any word on Wade? He healthy? Working out?

Yes, Wade is one of the guys on campus working out. He's making good progress. Was supposed to be released to do some running this week.

Working out, has a ways to go. They tried finding him a gym in RIC, could not, but Wade finally found one that JJ said was better than what they were looking at. Sorry, should have mentioned that (duh)

Not to be petty, but there is no such country as Yugoslavia. It existed, but fell apart in the 1990's. The area once occupied by Yugoslavia is now several different countries.

The country was Croatia and the trip was supposed to be next month. Due to Covid and travel restrictions it was canceled a few months ago.
I think the facility in Richmond for Wade was for physical therapy.
This was the second Zoom BB event. They both were great.
Coach Jones and Stith both are socially distancing from the players that are working out in the Mitch.
Can't remember who mentioned it on the Zoom event but there's a series of interviews with former players on https://odusports.com/sports/mens-basketball.
So far...Drew Williamson, Frank Hassell, Kevin Swann and Ben Finney.
Watch and enjoy....

Croatia is a beautiful country. My son and his family live in that part of the world. Too bad they missed out. Yes, travel restrictions and shelter in place there has been going on for awhile and continue.

OP wasn’t incorrect in what he said. JJ indicated that the trip to Croatia was cancelled and indicated that he had been to Croatia before, but at the time it was known as Yugoslavia.

The other player on campus was Oliver. Jones spoke highly of him and his upside. He said basically that last year was a year of him getting real extended playing time and trying to knock the rust off after sitting out the previous year. He expects a very solid year from Oliver.

Men's Basketball Recruiting: 2020
Coach Jones was asked about getting Virginia Tech and UVA on the schedule. He came out and said we try every year and basically told UVA to go F themselves. Said he was done with them since they keep running. He seemed genuinely passionate and fired up about this.

A little surprising considering the UVA basketball connections. It must be eye opening to see things from the non P5 perspective.

I think there's still some bad blood.
UVA is set to play @ JMU this year. We can't even get a buy game from them. I hoped that after Greenberg left we could get VT on the schedule again hasn't happened yet.

I wonder if the new coach would be more open to playing mids from the region since he came from Wofford and knows what life’s like on the other side of the equation.

True, however decent P5 schools (especially ACC/B10) no longer benefit from scheduling teams like ODU. They are essentially in a lose/lose, as if they win, they're SOS still goes down (not that it would really matter to legitimate Top 25 teams); if they lose, it's demoralizing to their season.

I know that during the BT era, the furthest they got with Duke would be open to a 1-off at Cameron Indoor and BT said hell no. I know the Georgetowns/VTs no longer will entertain any games, even with ODU being open to the "1-off" over the last 4 years. However, I have not heard anything regarding UVA. Everything that I have ever heard was an emphatic "no" by UVA. I believe ODU was the one who tried to do the 2-for-1, but was immediately denied. I guess our 2012 game with them didn't help negotiations either.

Do we really want to play UVA while JJ is the coach? We would lose something like 52-28.

I guess it could be said would we want to play Alabama/Clemson if BW was still our head FB coach? My answer is a strong yes regardless of outcome. Get them on the schedule, and (in my dream world) on a regular basis, then at that point, I'll start discussion game outcomes.
