He violated his own rules with several of those picks.

Yeah, the most egregious is Appalachian State. The ACC would not choose a FIFTH school in North Carolina, let alone one that has such a low academic ranking in relation to the rest of the conference.

The concept is ridiculous but then again so are the picks—SMU to the SEC in round 1? If they had to take a G5 from Texas, Houston would be the top pick.
I’d also take BYU over UCF if I was the Big 12.

I actually think UCF would be the clear number one for anyone other than the PAC 12 or Big Ten. The growth potential there is just insane

I tend to agree (obviously), however I don’t think fsu or miami will let us in the ACC. SEC is a non-starter.

Not really.
A&M already more than provides the Houston market to the SEC so UH brings nothing new
SMU at least allows the SEC to plant it’s flag physically IN Dallas which is otherwise is a CFB no-man’s land right now. SEC teams coming to Dallas weekly in the fall, staying in Dallas hotels, eating at Dallas restaurants touring Dallas attractions suddenly gives the city huge incentive to become a pro-SEC town

RE: Mandel's Mailbag: P5 expansion draft
Unsaid here is that he specifically said UCF would be added to the Big 12 for football only (a stipulation he didn't use on all the others), and that the last pick by the B1G would be for the University of Toronto (because they're AAU). In all, a pretty silly exercise.
That being said, the UCF thing reminds me, and I haven't seen this discussed much - I'd bet good money that the NCAA is going to do away with the whole "minimum of 6 sports together to be a conference" thing pretty soon. As others have said, it makes no sense for almost any sport other than football and men's basketball. I imagine that the A5 conferences will probably opt to just remain in one conference for everything, but with athletic budgets about to take a serious hit, I think there will be a groundswell for regional conferences for most non-revenue sports. The biggest hurdle would be to separate football (and potentially men's basketball) from Title XI calculations.

You have to consider the ones available if you assume non-P5 schools. If you're choosing the complete package, I'd go with UConn or Temple but I'm obviously biased towards the Northeast. I'd be OK with UCF.

Well first of all they wouldn’t, but the premise of Mandel’s article is he is throwing out throw out a lot of factors that get considered and based it on geography and on the field performance.

Temple hosted both Penn State and Notre Dame a few years ago. If memory serves, they had great TV ratings and excellent attendance.
That would be something for the Big Ten to have its Big 3 playing in NYC, Philly, and DC markets often...and one among Rutgers-Temple-Maryland would likely be bowl eligible each year and help to fly the Big Ten banner in the Mid-Atlantic region.

RE: Mandel's Mailbag: P5 expansion draft
Another thing I'd have to assume is these conferences are being FORCED to take these teams. If you asked the Big Ten, SEC, ACC, and Pac 12 which G5/indy team they'd take, most likely their answer(s) would be NONE (unless they get raided).

I would buy that more if the next pick wasn't UCF to the Big 12. Cincy doesn't add that much to a conference that is already in Ohio and Indiana, and UC doesn't have much reach into Kentucky

If the ACC is being forced from the G-5 pool, that would be 1. Cincy, 2. UCF, 3. Navy
4. Tulane, 5. USF, and 6. Houston. Cincy is a boarderline AAU school with heavy, heavy research. They are the next in line so to speak regarding adding big time football after TT, FSU, and Louisville. USF has better academics than UCF and half of UCF is a community college - that still leaves a University of 30K students to go with the 25K cc students. However UCF is in Orlando. You can't trust Tulane to support sports, but they are in New Orleans. Other ACC schools, AD's, and Presidents, like the Naval Academy. Houston cheats less than SMU.

Don't think that would bother the ACC much.
