What modified RPI rankings for FBS in 2019 would look like
Just for the hell of it, I calculated RPI ratings for the FBS for the 2019 season.

Now it doesn't work exactly the way it does in basketball or baseball, though.

You can think of the usual RPI as giving each team 1 point for a win and a 0 points for a loss and then averaging each team's number of points over each game, and using those averages and those of opponents and opponent's opponents to come up with rankings.

In this system, I replace the 0s and 1s with the actual point differentials from the games (because not all wins and loses are the same, right?).

Here's the rankings 1-130:

Kinda surprising Ohio State is number 1, but they were #1 at the end of the season in some rankings systems (like Bill Connelly's).

The other big anomaly is FAU being the top G5 team.

Ohio State has no buisness being #1. I also see some teams that are rated extremely low, as in Minnesota for example.

That was a painful post for me to write.

If you’re looking for a simple rating, I prefer SRS:

Sport-Reference caps margin of victory between 7 and 24 (a 1-point win is recorded as a 7-point win). Not sure what they use for FCS teams. I also use a modified SRS component with no caps and setting FCS teams to -25.

If your rankings are pre-bowl, the Ohio State at #1 rank is defensible. But not after.

But FAU as the top G5? That's hard to fathom. They got clobbered by UCF, the 3rd or 4th best AAC team, lost to Marshall and arguably didn't have a win worth mentioning until SMU in their bowl game, and that's barely worth mentioning. That's bizarro.

Shocked Nebraska's that high. They could easily lose to each of the 30 teams under them. Their best win was against #76 Illinois and even that was only by a touchdown.

There is already an FPI system

2019 College Football FPI

It's post bowl, and also has Ohio State as #1

It has UCF as the highest G5. FAU comes in behind Memphis, Boise, App State, Cincinnati, Navy, Louisiana, and SMU.

Here is how FPI is calculated.

Ya, but... that is a secret ESPN formula. It’s good at predicting games but the “RPI” in basketball was meant to be easy enough for hobbyists to compute and was more a record vs. schedule index.

Boy that is a dumb system, as it also has LSU #3 behind Clemson. By most accounts, like Sagarin, LSU played a tougher schedule than Ohio State and Clemson, and didn't lose while both of those teams did, yet LSU is #3.
