This is a Memphis board. Cal gets no credit for people who didn't go to Memphis.

Finch > Caligula x2

Any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

And since he got Penny; he gets .20 credit for each of Penny's recruits (mult-line marketing airplane scheme kind of an AmWay thing...).

Close the book, case closed, no discussion, drop the mic... walk off.

Absolutely, how can you argue with that. He gets
at least partial credit for
Lee, Bedford, Askew, Turner, Boyd, Phillips, etc
Full credit for
Perry, Vaughn, Hardaway, Mundt, Henderson, Wright, etc
and aprtial credit for
Harris, Jefferies, Achuiwa, Wiseman, Cisse, Quinones, Baugh, etc, and going forward

Where would we be without Finch?
No final four in 72
Maybe no great teams in the 80s
None of his teams
No Hardaway
The only great team that didn't include Finch's influence was Callipari's, but would he have ever even thought of coming here without the ground work Finch had done. The greatest person ever in Tiger basketball history.

Thanks, I really needed the laugh this morning.

If either of you think Finch could've recruited at Purdue like he did at Memphis State, you are living in a fantasy world.
My opinion of Coach Finch was unfortunately altered by associations with players. I will leave it at that. Love the man and all he did for Tiger Nation, but he wasn't the greatest coach in Memphis history.

No one is aruguing that. This is the Memphis Tigers Board. Not the purdue, not utk, not rebels, Tigers as in 901 and not lsu. Things are first evaluated through blue tiger glasses. And this thread isn't about coach player relationships. It's about signing talent at Memphis.

Finch wins, for whatever and all reasons.

Finch had a great run of getting Memphis players.

Penny has missed on a couple of big time locals already but had a great year last season.

After thinking it over some more I do think Finch was our best recruiter ever, Penny might catch him, I hope so.

RE: Was Coach Finch Best Recruiting Coach?
Ultimately, I think that Penny will be the best. I think that he is (will be) a more elite recruiter than Cal was during his tenure here (I'm not talking Calipari in 2020 at Kentucky). Here's why: Penny doesn't suffer "knuckleheads". I don't see Penny ever putting up with a Sean Banks or Kuran Iverson, or Jelan Kendrick or a 'tag-a-long' (much as I liked Arthur Barclay) just to get a high-level recruit. He has so far been able to be much more selective in who he recruits (we'll see about Landers Nolley, he seems the most risky player that Penny has recruited). That is what to me separates 2020 Calipari and Coach K from everyone else; is not just the elite level recruits they get, but they get players who are not going to mess up the chemistry of the team. For example, Cal's 2001 recruiting class that had a lot of talent, including a top 10 pick in the NBA draft, totally messed up the chemistry of the team; and, in spite of the Beale street parade, that team underachieved. I don't see Penny recruiting players/allowing players to mess up team chemistry by their individual play. This is what sets Penny apart as a recruiter, in my opinion.

Cal is the best recruiter in the history of the college game
Larry the best recruiter in the city of Memphis, some Dude named Nolan Richardson came along and
Dipped in the soup and snagged some players Larry would of normally signed.
Ike believes Penny will eventually rival Larry as the top Memphis recruiter but remember Penny is recruiting
National and I don't know how Larry did on the national level

Finch wasn't the greatest recruiter ever because he pretty much only signed kids that were coming here regardless. Penny wasn't a recruiting steal, he was going to be a Tiger since 8th grade.

You could've probably been the coach at Memphis State and landed 75% of his recruits. I went to school with a player that said the only way he wasn't going to MSU was if they didn't offer. Most kids at that time grew up MSU fans. We didn't have ESPN as readily back then and recruiting wasn't the same as it is now.

So, all your statements about being the GOAT are laughable, especially since you make the emphatic declaration that there is no discussion. I will pick the mic up and bash you with it. However, feel free to walk off because you don't really add to the discussion other than comic relief.

Now Now, don't resort to crass personal attacks. For sure don't physically threaten anyone. Belittles you and our board.

When losing a debate best to sit back an analyze how you lost. Typically it's you didn't grasp all the facts and didn't understand the frame of the question or oppositions argument. In this case; you did all 3.

Welcome to our board BTW; you've almost been her a year. Good luck making it to 2.

Then why isn't it reported on unless the FBI is involved? Surely there are intrepid young Woodward and Bernsteins out there who would be pursuing this stuff if it was as rampant as you say. Or are the journalists complicit in it?

Hopefully you are being sarcastic.

Penny paid Wiseman to play for him at East (At least 10k)...He aint above it...It aint that hard.

The argument was over whether that should've affected Wiseman's College eligibility and that argument is a valid one but that doesn't change the payment.

Now there are tons of other news stories about the payments that went to players...Normally coming out after the fact.

I think I was taking a shot at journalism. They report after the fact after some handler feels jilted by whomever the kid chooses for an agent and files a lawsuit, etc. Otherwise, the journalists turn a blind eye to it.

And that’s all there is to it.

Edit: but to be fair, I pretty much missed the entire Finch era. I left Memphis before he coached his first game and by the internet became mainstream, he was gone. I kept up as best I could. An occasional pkg from home with newspaper clippings and VHS tapes.

RE: Was Coach Finch Best Recruiting Coach?
Coach Finch was the best local recruiter we've had, but he struggled to recruit outside of the region. One can argue that he signed more McDonald's A-A's than Calipari, but every one of the McDonald guys he signed was either a Memphian, or had close ties to the city.

When Calipari signed DeJaun Wagner away from Louisville, I figured that he was going to be the best recruiter we'd ever seen. Milt Wagner was an all-american at Louisville, and led them to a national championship. Getting his son to come to one of their historical arch-rivals was unbelievable.

Penny may surpass him as the best Memphis recruiter, but it will take a couple of years before I'm ready to say he's better than Calipari.

RE: Was Coach Finch Best Recruiting Coach?
Love Finch and Dana, but Cal was the best recruiter. (Present coach excepted, since he hasn't been here long enough yet.)

Cal recruited nationally, as well as getting who he wanted from the city. Finch and Dana - different times, to be sure - but they recruited 99% locally. Their success depended upon how strong the city classes were. Fortunately, we had some strong city classes back then.

After we had fallen and were having trouble getting back up (sound familiar?), Cal managed to convince kids from Chicago, Detroit, Camden, Boston, etc. to come rebuild our program. And he did it going toe-to-toe with programs like Kansas and Kentucky for the players he wanted. He was a great recruiter.
