I agree that it's a safer environment, but I think the question was: How will the Cartel programs spin the "student-athlete" charade when the athletes are the only students?

They're dreading the moment that the Mouse speaks French (when ESPN invokes force majeure).

I’m now if the thought we won’t play. No one. That said I hope we do. We can social distance at LF and a 24,000 crowd will look like 48,000.

MTSU will not have a problem with social distancing from what I’ve seen. Lol

Social distancing of fans in attendance is not the issue at all. It’s the fact that there’s Thousands of college football players across the country without any type of a bubble set up like the nba is instituting (and it remains to be seen if even that will be successful) and free reign to out and do whatever college students want to do, aka party in large crowds, go to bars, etc etc etc. all of this while covid is surging in the majority of the country. I really do not see it happening unless it’s pushed back a very significant amount of time, and it is very cloudy even in that scenario.

If there’s even one case of a team member that very likely means shutting down a very large portion of the team for a quarantine, maybe even the whole team.

I just don’t see it being feasible.

The NCAA just released the guidelines teams must operate under.

• COVID-19 testing and results to be completed within 72 hours of competition in “high risk contact sports” such as football
• Daily self-checks for athletes and staff
• Masks to be worn on the sideline by all players, coaches and staff, including players who move from the playing field to the sideline to confer with coaches.
• Outdoor training when possible, with indoor training only permissible with “good ventilation”
• Individuals with “high risk exposure” must be quarantined for 14 days The NCAA is using the Centers for Disease Control definition of “high risk exposure,” which is as follows: “any situation in which there has been greater than 15 minutes of close contact, defined as being less than six feet apart, with an infectious individual,” regardless if that individual is “symptomatic, pre-symptomatic or asymptomatic.”

As "The Answer" already pointed out, this will quickly become untenable. There will be a positive test, and suddenly a quarter of the starting squad will be in a defacto 2 week suspension. Someone lies about their exposure, and then 2 or 3 more students test positive a few weeks later, and the whole team is suspended. Other teams will refuse to play them...

You're kidding yourself if you think this season happens.

Noticed the Legion had a decent amount of fans last night ... probably easier to monitor a pro soccer team than a huge team of college football players though.

Yup. That's why I think football is the least likely sport to resume. Too many numbers at too close quarters. From the roster size to the size of the stadiums/crowds involved, it's the least suitable for this suck ass time we find ourselves.

The pro leagues in Europe have been playing for quite some time now, and I haven’t heard of any major issues. They obviously don’t have fans, but those on the benches are spread out and wearing masks. Completely agree this is an easier thing to pull off however. I don’t know how football would safely go about playing to be honest.

Here's the thing about a pro league in Europe vs. a pro league in the US

The NFLPA said today that 72 NFL players are currently positive for coronavirus (https://www.reuters.com/article/us-healt...reddit.com) If multi-millionaire players who have every resource in the world to stay quarantined and every reason in the world to stay quarantined but still can't manage it, there's no way to ever expect college students to do it

Mark Emmert basically said today that there wouldn’t be fall sports unless things turn around.

“If there is to be college sports in the fall, we need to get a much better handle on the pandemic”

Agreed. And there will be a 2nd wave this fall/winter to go along with the seasonal increase in flu. The flu won’t necessarily hit those infected with C-19, of course (it might help in that it keeps people inside), but it will hit many people that avoid the pandemic virus and the usual mortality rate will add to COVID deaths. I’d guess an 80% chance winter and spring sports may be canceled, too...including hoops.

The rest of the industrialized world is handling the pandemic better than the US, and so are in a much better position to play.

Look what’s happening with the MLS restart. Whole teams are having to drop out because of COVID outbreaks within the teams leaving them with too few healthy players to play.

2 teams out of 26 dropped out. That's actually a pretty low percentage given what's going on. Since then the MLS reports ZERO positive tests in Orlando.

Not American football; most of the bigger Euro leagues have cancelled (the Brits, French and Italians) and the rest postponed; no one's actually going forward with the season yet.

Why the NCAA doesn't control college football and never will

Key passage:

"Football Bowl Subdivision conferences have never been closer to breaking away from the NCAA. The small steps to separation began in 1984, but those steps became leaps in recent years. The five “power” conferences formed their own group, the “Autonomy 5,” in 2014 for the purpose of forming its own legislation. Their always-evolving power has been on full display this summer. The commissioners of the five most powerful conferences have met almost daily during the pandemic to discuss options for the upcoming football season. In a sense, the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC became a superconference by working so closely this summer to develop testing protocols and scheduling plans."

Separation is coming. Possibly much sooner than most expect.

These meetings also make clear there is no P6 and never will be. CUSA has as much voice as the AAC, which is none.

The author should have paid closer attention to what SEC commissioner Sankey had to say in the fall out of the Big Ten announcement about thinking all the conferences were being honest with each other and were working together. He was VERY angry with the Big Ten and went further by saying since they weren't working together, the SEC would be looking out for itself in the future. After that statement the ACC quickly changed course and fell in line with the SEC and the Big 12 adopted a similar stance shortly thereafter.

The only way the P5 breaks away right now is if the Big10/Pac12 capitulate to the SEC. And those two are too arrogant in their own self importance to allow anyone to dictate terms to them.

@PeteThamel
Sources: The ACC is discussing scheduling models, with 10 league games and a "plus one" outside the conference as the favorite. The ACC start date is still being debated between September 12, 19 and 26.

**Hat tip to WesternBlazer

If this is the ACC's favorite format, I wouldn't be surprised if it's the direction the SEC is leaning. Both leagues have big cross conference in-state rivalries that financially need to be played, unlike the Big10 and PAC12. Our two instate SEC programs don't but AU already plays at UNC and seems like Alabama will play BYU so they are close to set.

The SEC Commish can bluster but in this case I'll believe what I see. If there is a season, it will look remarkably like the leagues have already separated. I'd call it a test run.
