Reddit bans r/The_Donald, the largest pro-Trump subreddit, cracks down on hate speech
Reddit just banned r/The_Donald, the largest pro-Trump subreddit, as it cracks down on hate speech and targeting

Quote:Reddit's biggest community for supporters of President Donald Trump is no more.

The message board site banned more than 2,000 subreddits that regularly broke its rules on harassment, hate speech, and targeting on Monday, CEO Steve Huffman announced in a post. One of those subreddits was r/The_Donald, a pro-Trump forum with more than 790,000 users.

"All communities on Reddit must abide by our content policy in good faith. We banned r/The_Donald because it has not done so, despite every opportunity," Huffman wrote. "The community has consistently hosted and upvoted more rule-breaking content than average ... and its mods have refused to meet our most basic expectations."

The subreddits were banned as part of Reddit's enforcement of a new policy on hate speech, which states that people or subreddits who "promote hate based on identity or vulnerability" will be banned. The policy also prohibits targeting "victims of a major violent event and their families."

Other banned subreddits include right-wing forums like r/CampusConservative, r/thenewright, and r/rightwinglgbt. They also included some left-wing subreddits like r/ChapoTrapHouse and r/cumtown, run by fans of two leftist podcasts of the same names, respectively. A subreddit dedicated to trans-exclusionary feminism, r/GenderCritical, was also banned.

"To be clear, views across the political spectrum are allowed on Reddit — but all communities must work within our policies and do so in good faith, without exception," Huffman wrote.

Huffman's announcement was met with celebration in some corners of Reddit, including r/AgainstHateSubreddits, a community that has previously pressured moderators to take action against hate speech. Meanwhile, other subreddits were inundated with threads griping about the bans. Some braced for more bans to come as Reddit enforces the policy — as one commenter in r/conspiracy wrote, "They will come for this place eventually."

Reddit is the latest social media site to take a stand in recent weeks against speech by President Donald Trump and his supporters that violate their policies. Twitter applied warning labels to several of Trump's tweets for the first time ever this month, while Facebook blocked a Trump ad that included a Nazi symbol.

Reddit was previously seen as a less-moderated forum than other social media sites, but rolled out anti-harassment policies in 2015 and has started taking coordinated action to remove subreddits that encourage illegal activity in recent years.

I'm not down with censoring either side of the aisle and preferred the_donald to be left open/alone. I thought the required admin approved subscription to read it was a good compromise (since they select their own mods). That said, the_donald was a cess pool for misinformation, doxxing, and regularly had threads of racist/xenophobic/homophobic nature. But you know what stopped me from being bothered by it? I didn't visit the site.

Unlike the misinformation, doxxing, racist/xenophobic/heterophobic articles from NYT and CNN that get put in your face everyday by Google and the rest of MSM. You can avoid the sites, but not seeing the drivel.

RE: Reddit bans r/The_Donald, the largest pro-Trump subreddit, cracks down on hate speech
Twitch has suspended Trump account as well:
https://www.engadget.com/twitch-suspends...45621.html
Quote:Twitch has temporarily suspended Donald Trump’s account. The company says the channel’s broadcast of the President’s Tulsa Rally and recent re-airing of one of his 2016 campaign stops violated its hateful conduct and harassment policies. The comments Twitch took issue with feature the President making negative comments about Mexican migrants.

“Hey, it’s 1:00 o’clock in the morning and a very tough, I’ve used the word on occasion, hombre, a very tough hombre is breaking into the window of a young woman whose husband is away as a traveling salesman or whatever he may do,” Trump says in one of the videos flagged by Twitch.

In a statement to Engadget, the company said, “Hateful conduct is not allowed on Twitch. In line with our policies, President Trump’s channel has been issued a temporary suspension from Twitch for comments made on stream.”

Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign created the account last October. Twitch says it made clear to the President’s media team when it created the account that it doesn’t make exceptions for politicians. “Like anyone else, politicians on Twitch must adhere to our Terms of Service and Community Guidelines,” the company said at the time. “We do not make exceptions for political or newsworthy content, and will take action on content reported to us that violates our rules.”

The move comes on the same day Reddit banned The_Donald subreddit. Beyond angering Trump, the suspension is likely to lead to further calls to roll back Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. The clause protects online platforms in a variety of circumstances from libel suits based on the actions of their users. In May, the President signed an executive order pushing the FTC to take action against companies that limit their users’ speech after Twitter hid one of his tweets for glorifying violence. The Justice Department recently shared its wishlist of Section 230 rollbacks, and a group of bipartisan lawmakers introduced a senate bill aimed at updating the clause for the modern era.

Reddit's a complete cesspool and it's been well known for a long time now where they stand politically. They don't have a problem with any of those things you listed, just who does it.

Dont do Reddit and have certainly never been to that specific sub-Reddit---but the truth is most of these Social Media platforms are cesspools of hate and misinformation. For instance--just check out the comments sections on your favorite political figure on Twitter. The vile crap being posted by both sides is just nuts. 04-cheers

Conservatives don't post on Reddit. Reddit's made sure of that for years. /r/the_donald was a weird anomaly. Chapo being deleted doesn't shock me either. They're the typical Brooklyn bougie wannabe revolutionaries, they just hate PC culture and don't play nice with the establishment left.

This is the story I find _more_ interesting than some sub-reddit... never been on Reddit, never will care to.

But this one ... oohh.. Jackie boy what are you doing. You're gonna be bringing down that 230 gavel on your head REALLY Hard!

One of the few live-streaming sources around, Gray... (And it will always lean heavily liberal), but ironically, they've almost NEVER (until this move) ever taken an action against anyone who streamed in favor of Republicans or Democrats, pro-Covid/anti-covid actions... unlike google/youtube.

They've had other issues they're dealing with right now...(They're dealing with sexual allegations, one of their top stars got perma-banned), but it honestly amazes me that Twitch kept their nose clean when it came to streamers of any political persuasion until this one.
