Because people are not perfectly rational and most people don't follow the blow by blow. Each of the schools that have left for the SWAC or ASUN to date "undermine" the conference, but it can survive indefinitely on it's current membership, so they'll all claim "it was still alive when we left, so we didn't kill it." (... in addition to shifting the blame ... B-C is FAMU's fault, FAMU is NC A&T's fault, etc.)

It is a much bigger challenge to survive one more FB school leaving and requiring either a new FB school or else for multiple schools to start baseball and then for the baseball schools to start volleyball or some such third men's team sport.

Howard doesn't have to perform a miracle. If they make a good faith effort to keep the MEAC alive and it founders regardless, then they'll not be blamed for destroying an HBCU institution, and avoiding that blame is a good CYA move for them.

I'm hoping the MEAC hangs together, since I want the MAC to make a bid for Howard soccer next year, to hold onto our autobid when SIU-Edwardsville moves from the OVC to the MVC, and their soccer team moves from the MAC. But I must say, the odds seem a bit short of 50:50.

Adding Delaware St. keeps football at 8 full members after Robert Morris leaves

Merrimack already sees to that. DSU would make it 9 teams, which allows them to play an 8-team round robin like "bigger" conferences do without expanding the footprint of the league and while adding a school already in Division I. That would be the main benefit of it. Budget wise, they're slightly below CCSU, I believe, but not enough to be at a significant disadvantage.

Delaware State don't fit their mission. New Haven and Bentley would be invited to NEC before Delaware State.

So either Delaware State did ask, or else is keeping its option to ask open, otherwise they would just deny it in order to reduce the perceived instability of their current conference.

And the NEC has not said yes, as of yet, because then Delaware State would be leaking that they were leaving.

What we don't know is whether the NEC has said "no", or the NEC has said, "we have to ask our members about that."

If the NEC didnt want to or was not currently exploring the option, they likely would have said or added they were not pursuing any further expansion at this time.

I think the ball is in the NEC'S court of this one

I can see both sides on this one. It seems like things hinge on Howard. If Howard is so influential in the conference and can't be controlled in the meetings, it's a problem. It does seem Howard has some/more pull in MEAC than others. It seems to finally grate on others enough to do something different.

But, Howard wasn't the only school to stiff Hampton when they left. Push the issue of an exit fee that wasn't built into the MEAC bylaws, then bypass them in scheduling.

MEAC comes off as a messed up place with numerous bad characters, imo. Howard might be the worst of them, maybe, but they aren't the only antagonist, imo.

I don't follow the MEAC nearly closely enough to have a view on whether Howard is a good actor or bad actor, but clearly the former Northern division is on the verge of coming unraveled without Howard, and now the former Northern division is the bulk of what remains.

Whether Howard was acting in ways which helped bring MEAC to this pass, or makes a convenient scapegoat because everyone knows how influential it is, or a combination of both, that I cannot say.

However, a lot of that is inside baseball. When it comes to a conference you are in collapsing, that is a lot more visible among the alumni that do not follow every individual move ... similar to the way that soccer supporters (perhaps my age and older, as they would have remembered a much more competitive Howard soccer program) came out of the woodwork when the soccer program was in peril.

If taking Delaware State as a no-brainer for the NEC, we likely would have already heard about the move.

It might be they would prefer someone else finish the job of destabilizing the conference so they can see whether they can end up with Howard, before making a final decision on Delaware State. In that case they can afford to be patient, as the current momentum if toward the MEAC falling apart, even if it might take until this time next year to finalize the dismantling.

I dont think the ASun or the Big South are going to be the ones to pull the tigger on the MEAC by taking the last portion of its southern flank

Yes, but what if SCSU, NCCU, and/or NSU approach the ASUN or Big South, rather than the conferences approaching the schools?

This whole notion of "starting up a new football conference" the ASUN commissioner was floating is a lot closer to feasible if it starts with the shell of a conference that is in it's two year grace period to get back up to the minimum numbers.

Hopefully the Presidents balk at going through with that in the midst of the uncertainty connected to the epidemic, but even if they balk at that now, the MEAC is not in the clear just because it fails to collapse right now.

More likely, how does the ASUN react to the fact that certainly NCCU and NSU and possibly SCSU have approached them?

In a move that could be portrayed as sticking the knife in and killing off an African-American institution for it's own personal benefit, if they could portray it as rescuing two or more HBCU's with nowhere to go as their conference collapses down around their ears, that makes for a much nicer spin.

It might help the personal empire-building game of the ASUN Commissioner a lot of the NEC would be the one to stick the knife in, by accepting Delaware State.
