(06-18-2020 12:27 PM)Anders Wrote:  How do scholarships work in the NCAA for dual sport athletes. Is it possible he could be a scholarship athlete in football and a “walk-on” for basketball? It would possibly be the other way around in this case if it actually happened but it would be nice to have an extra scholarship guy for basketball. I guess it boils down to how both coaches feel about it and discuss. Either way, it feels almost impossible for kids to manage both these days but who knows.
Rules for multi-sport athletes
The NCAA also has rules specifying the sport in which multi-sport athletes are to be counted, with the basic rules being:
Anyone who participates in football is counted in that sport, even if he does not receive financial aid from the football program. An exception exists for players at non-scholarship FCS programs who receive aid in another sport.

-Participants in basketball are counted in that sport, unless they also play football.
-Participants in men's ice hockey are counted in that sport, unless they also play football or basketball.
-Participants in both men's swimming and diving and men's water polo are counted in swimming and diving, unless they count in football or basketball.
-Participants in women's (indoor) volleyball are counted in that sport unless they also play basketball.
-All other multi-sport athletes are counted in whichever sport the school chooses.

Devon Savage - 6'4 SF out of Riverdale Baptist in Upper Marlboro, MD (PG County)

https://www.verbalcommits.com/players/devon-savage

https://www.prephoops.com/2019/06/prospe...-savage-2/
Posted On: 06/25/19 8:47 AM

2021 guard Devon Savage recently transferred from St. John’s to Riverdale Baptist and the move definitely looks to have paid off for him as he is having a good summer league. During summer league he is averaging 16.0 points per game and is looking to be one of the top scorers in the area for the 2021 class. He talked about his move to Riverdale with Prep Hoops.

“It has been good, we are still trying to get used to playing with each other. Defensively, we need to get better in half court so that is what we are still working on. “Individually it has been good too, I have been working out everyday with the coaches, getting shots up so it has been good.”

For the 16u Team Takeover team, he is an important piece and he has is eye on winning Peach Jam which takes place in July.

“It has been good, I am looking forward to going to Peach Jam with Team Takeover, we are looking to do good and trying to win it.”

One thing that has stood out during summer league is his leadership he has brought over to Riverdale and he spoke on that.

“I want to be known as a very vocal person, I always want to hype my teammates up and always try to get them more involved with the game.”

Recently college coaches were allowed to directly contact 2021 prospects and he said he heard from, “Butler, St. Joe’s, and Delaware State.”

Butler has landed a few kids from the DMV in the recent years and Savage could be another one that ends up there.

“I know Aaron Thompson the point guard up there so I am familiar with the Big East and I like Butler.”

When asked if he is trying to take an visits soon, he said, “I am in the works on scheduling a visit to Delaware State.”

He talked about his relationship with the MEAC program, “They are texting me here and there but have recently showed a lot of interest.”

Watching the video from the Facebook link, it looks like he is closer to the 6'4/6'5 level. But if he averaged over 9 rebounds a game at 6'1 and 170, that would certainly be the type of junkyard dog attitude any team in the nation would love to have!

HCMB is offering a bunch of guards, which sounds good to me...especially if we can find more consistent gunners from outside the arc. I am curious to see if/when we start offering more post players. We are a bit thin in terms of numbers with Jacobs being a Sr. this upcoming season. Only Mensah and Wooden at 6'8" or taller.

Without looking in depth, weren’t his GSU teams fairly guard heavy also? It seems the “positionless” player philosophy would favor players who can hit outside shots, which tend to be more guards than bigs.

Certainly not complaining about guards. Take as many as we reasonably can. And, it isn't like at the mid-major level there are a ton of 7-footer types dominating games. At the same time, you prefer to have at least 3 or 4 guys with length (and preferably long arms) who can defend in the post, bang, and rebound. I have faith in HCMB and his vision (for now at least 03-thumbsup)...just a bit surprised to not see us tied to any bigs...yet. And, perhaps we are and these sites just haven't posted them yet. If we take 3 in this upcoming 2021 class, I'm going to assume for the time being HCMB wants either 2 guards & 1 big or 1 guard, 1 wing and 1 big.

RE: 2021 MBB Recruiting
Byington has repeatedly described his style as “positionless basketball” and he and his staff did a remarkable job quickly assembling a roster filled with athletes who can play all over the court.

“I like to play two or three guys on the court who have point guard capabilities,” Byington told the Daily News-Record earlier this summer. “Our offense can adjust to personnel and I tell the players, the greater your skill set the greater we can use you in the offense. If they are a big who can shoot 3’s, it’s going to be used. Or sometimes you have a bigger wing who can post up. I love versatility.”

That is from a Mettlen article on the team from a couple of days ago.
https://www.dnronline.com/sports/analysi...630aa.html

Previous rosters had several 6’7 or 6’8 players, but I hope those who follow this coach and what he has done previously aren’t stuck in some 1980s way of thinking about basketball. 2 guards 1 SF 1 PF 1C.

All good stuff. I'm not stuck in a traditional set up. I've coached AAU hoops for a long time and I've adapted to the game. That's why I refer to the guys in the post as "bigs" and not as a PF or C. Bigs can play the 4 or 5. They can bounce out and shoot 3's. They can defend on the perimeter as well because opposing team's bigs can and will head outside the arc as well. I'm all for positionless basketball. I also will trade height for long arms. Arm length is one of the most underappreciated physical characteristics in the game of hoops. I'll take a 6'6" guy with long wingspan over a 6'8" guy. I do like having some bigs because they can and often do have an incredible impact on a game defensively.

If I had to start a team from scratch tomorrow and had my pick of what I wanted from a traditional position viewpoint, I would first take a point guard. They are the QB and the team can't function properly without the best one you can get your hands on. I would then pick a shot blocking monster. Call them a center. Call them a power forward. Call them a Stretch 4. Doesn't matter to me. I want a big guy who alters the opposing team's offensive approach and provides the other 4 defenders the opportunity to take chances defensively because there's a big dog sitting back in the paint to clean up mistakes. Then, gotta have more guards who can handle, distribute and preferably shoot to stretch the opposing defense and open up space. Again, I don't care what you call them. I'm calling them guards for easy reference but they can be swing guys, combo guards, small forwards, whatever.

That's just me though. I'm betting when HCMB talks about positionless players, he isn't ignoring how important Mensah and Jacobs (and Wooden perhaps) can and will be controlling the inside play.
