In other words, we have the best DL in the G5 and we're probably in the Top 30 comp to the P5.

He probably won't get the plaudits because the level of competition will likely be held against him but he has a lot of characteristics that remind me of Chase Young. A guy that uses speed to exploit a mismatch on the edge. Similar frame as well.

Think about this...6'5" 260lb. and can run like a deer. The bonus? The kid's just entering his junior season. The double bonus? Put him on a DL with as much depth and flexibility as we've potentially ever had in our program's history.

The triple bonus - our D-backs are outstanding, so the opposing QB will have a tough time finding open receivers early.

I see this being a very '07-like defense turnover-wise. With Nelms, Byrd, and Hoke pressuring there were a lot of bad tosses and reads by opposing QBs that Mickens and DeLo took full advantage of...with Coby and Sauce, I could see much of the same.

For those who weren't around or didnt remember, we forced 26 INTs in 13 games that season, along with having 34.5 sacks from our DL. Most fun defense I've had to pleasure to watch at any level.

I am a big fan of the 2007 club. That defense contained Pat White/Steve Slaton to 28 points. WVU was putting up video game stats that year.

The team had WTF losses to Pitt and Louisville. Win those games and we would have been in BCS bowls three years in a row.

Yep...not at the Apex of WTF losses (that would be the Munchie/Kay debacle year for CBJ), but that's definitely up there with how bad Pitt was when we lost to them...Louisville at least still had Brohm at QB, but man was that defense putrid.

Hey wait a minute gents. We're starting to enter the zone of "our typical hyberbolic mid-summer assessment" on this defense.
03-lmfao04-cheers

Well, I'm comparing them to a 10-3 defense...which would be worse than the last two years, and our offense is nowhere close to that one, but keep fishing 04-cheers.

Speaking of comparing defenses, I was curious how UC's teams have fared against the opponent's scoring per game average. I went back to Mark Dantonio's regime and listed them according to their PPG average [NCAA rank] as found in the NCAA football stats archives...

17.2 [9] [2018] LF
18.5 [14] [2012] BJ
18.8 [13] [2007] BK
19.6 [36] [2006] MD
20.1 [25] [2008] BK
20.3 [20] [2011] BJ
20.6 [24] [2019] LF
21.0 [14] [2013] TT
23.1 [44] [2009] BK
26.7 [69] [2004] MD
26.9 [55] [2016] TT
27.2 [68] [2014] TT
28.0 [68] [2010] BJ
31.2 [91] [2015] TT
31.4 [96] [2005] MD
31.8 [94] [2017] LF

06, 07 and 08 were our three best defenses when you consider the schedule.

There were times that Sanders had trouble controlling his emotions. I still remember late in the 4th quarter of the 1st MEM game when he slapped the MEM QB in the head after the play was over and may have cost us the game.

That should come with maturation. Pitts got booted out of 2 games in 2018 and kept his cool for the most part in 2019. In the event he does lose his head, there is plenty of depth along the DL.

As much as I love Bryan Wright, it probably will help to have a more reserved linebacker behind Myjai. Those two were **** talking the QB after damn near every play lol. We were down by like 21 to OSU and B Wright was jawing with Justin Fields.

Bolded, not a good look, especially in that game. And not to hijack this thread, but in a very fine season that's the one game I don't think our coaching staff prepared for properly. It was going to be a loss, but got way too ugly, too fast and snowballed.

Listening to a couple recent podcasts with Marcus Freeman, he had a very difficult relationship with B Wright. He said Wright put gray hairs on his head. Wright would do something as you described and then on the next play make an outstanding play like he did against BC where he sacked and stripped the ball from the QB as he took the snap from center. He, along with Perry Young, has tremendous energy and were all over the field on each snap. This often seemed to lift the play of the rest of the unit, which is were I think we will really miss him.
