Unfortunately I am not very optimistic at this point. I REALLY hope I'm wrong but with the breakouts at places like Clemson and several other schools, I'm not sure if any amount of precautions will be sufficient. I also worry a little more about the other schools in the conference who don't have the type of resources and facilities that JMU has. If the opponent can't play, there's nothing you can do about it. A lot of these schools struggle to fund their programs even under normal circumstances. Not that JMU doesn't, but relatively speaking we have more than most.

RE: Tracking the return of JMU sports (no discussions of validity of covid pandemic)
The definitive numbers I saw were 28 out of 315 tested students/athletes at Clemson. Bulk majority were asymptomatic and none hospitalized.

Today I saw a news bit about elevated Covid in sewage tests at Clemson city, and increased cases in the state of SC.

A lot of details are unclear to me, that make it hard to draw conclusions.

What are the number of new cases found in Clemson city? How many of these are asymptomatic? How many are hospitalized or required medical care? How many are linked in some way to either the school or the athletes?

I think some may be jumping the gun to conclude that athletes returning to campus are causing an outbreak.

two primary questions:
- are schools/students significantly increasing the rate of spread? Or is that just happening in communities for other reasons?
- are we seeing increased case load in hospitals, or other bad outcomes?

I saw another article today that suggested 80% of the cases in March timeframe may have been unknown/undetected. It’s possible we are finding more cases now because of increased testing.

Yep, I agree with everything you said but unfortunately, I fear the optics and perception of the headlines are what I believe may have more of an impact than reality.

If college football is canceled based on "perception of headlines", some of which have definitely been misleading with respect to Clemson, that is indeed a sad thing.

I don't think that will be the outcome. Part of this seemed to be a press release by the city and school to try to encourage use of masks in town. It may backfire if it leads to pressure for them to close things down.

Related - The AAC just announced that pre-game, halftime, and post-game shows are gone for this year - along with all visiting bands & cheerleaders.

https://www.collegemarching.com/content/...QjuYLfD8tU

The article mentions other conferences are preparing guidelines that could be even more strict.

Any rumblings regarding the MRDs?

That sucks, but not really surprising. If you think about it, a lot of band instruments require someone blowing air into them and I have no idea how hard or easy it is to disinfect them, but it does seem like it could be a bit of a disaster should a breakout occur. At this point I'm just hoping we have games at all, but there's no doubt that the atmosphere will be nowhere close to the same.

They (AAC) did mention they would review & revise the on-field ban as the season progresses, so it could change. But these groups are all planning to play in the stands. I suspect some of them will shrink in size for a variety of reasons (social distancing, space availability). It is the weirdest time to be in this field of work...

I can imagine emptying spit valves would be problematic in the era of Covid.

Yeah and I have concerns about the concept of wind musicians moving air in general, but from the guidance given so far, I THINK it can be mitigated safely with distance and some precautions. NAfME has a guidance doc for marching bands, but the scientific studies they’re sponsoring on playing wind instruments isn’t ready yet. So we wait...

Only Drummers catch COVID. Wind players, most surely brass players, and especially trumpet players can't catch it.

Could Covid - 19 be dangerous to over weight lineman?

Every time a case pops up I see a two week quarantine. How can that work when 4 of Vandy's starting lineman get it?

There has been so many quarantines the last week, and the teams have not really even gotten together yet. Even a handful of tennis players got it.

Nope - too soon.

An estimated 0.031% of people in their 20s will die with a detectable infection.

Only 1%, of the same population will ever have to be hospitalized with infection.

This is from March btw, I think the picture continues to get rosier each day.

But, wait! Young college football player gets hit by a bus and is rushed to the hospital where docs examine his massive head trauma.

Doc 1: "What do you think?"

Doc 2: "Looks like COVID to me. No need to test. Get him on a vent, stat, before he dies!"

That's reassuring...with the amount of drool that comes naturally from trombone players, it would prove to be a true catastrophe...02-13-banana

I bet there is precisely 1 that dies... and that will be the end of fall sports for most schools. "Bet" isn't the correct word... but you know what I am getting at. I much more prefer your wager but there are too many athletes out there; somebody has a weaker immune system or condition that makes them susceptible. Remember how when this whole thing started there wasn't a single death in children under 10, but then one young person died from another condition but they also had COVID and it's all we heard about. Hope you're right though!

As far as I recall buses have not effecting athletics to this point.

Covid 19 has crushed athletics at this point. It's hardly a viable comparison.

I hope no athletes die. I'm not going to put my head in the sand and claim I know everything as I believe many seem to do. It will probably be more likely a coach dies, versus athlete, but I do "think" Covid will likely take a life of some currently involved with sports. It will likely be rationalized by some they were 65, or they had a pre-existing condition and probably just died with it, not due to it. Call me Kreskin.

While many will rationalize it away, keep in mind just testing positive to it is closing down camps all over the place. A death will likely change things substantially.

RE: Tracking the return of JMU sports (no discussions of validity of covid pandemic)
The fact of the matter remains, it is almost July and still nobody knows. The AD's don't know. The NCAA doesn't know. The University Prez's don't know.

I read yesterday in an article by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that my alma mater's (Ga Tech) AD, Todd Stansbury, just made a presentation to the athletic board that outlined 4 different home football attendance scenarios:

1. Full capacity allowed
2. Half capacity allowed
3. 25% capacity allowed
4. No fans

So, they don't know. This is just football. He also has to worry about volleyball and other sports.

The article then went on to talk about the decisions that would have to be made about concessions, will pre- and post-game on-campus gatherings be allowed (i.e., tailgating), student attendance policies, and so forth. Point being, it is much bigger as we all know than just a bunch of folks showing up for a game inside the stadium.

GT rarely sells out its home stadium and when it does it is usually filled with orange Clemson or red UGA fans (sad to say for me). But, at places like Clemson and UGA, if they limit their season ticket holder base to 30-50% capacity, it will be interesting to see what's going to happen when they tell folks who have contributed to the athletics funds for years that they are not allowed in. Not saying that will happen, but it won't be popular if it does. They don't know...yet. We are inching closer and closer to when some, if not all, of these decisions will have to be made. I sense many are "monitoring the situation" to see what others decide to do. The state/local governments have a part to play as well of course. I bet there is at least one AD in this country who would like the state Gov to make a decision so he/she won't be potentially viewed as a scapegoat.
