Tracking the return of JMU sports (NO more discussions of validity of covid pandemic)
For those who did not notice the other thread was moved to off topic, by someone other than Nutz or myself.

To not discuss this, would be not discussing the most relevant event for JMU sports at the moment.

I request we have a thread simply based on how JMU, other colleges, and pro sports are planning to move forward. Additionally how they handle cases as they arise.

If you'd like to discuss the validity of the Convid-19, right wing, left wing, or Trump or going after one another have those discussions on the off topic thread.

I've not seen this posting on here, but ODU has chosen to have their fall finals prior to Thanksgiving, and not begin their spring classes until January 9, 2021. I'm not sure the reasoning, but I'd guess they are giving themselves some additional time to plan based on what happens in the fall.

RE: Tracking the return of JMU sports (no discussions of validity of covid pandemic)
Good idea.

We normally know the VolleyDukes schedule by now. And yes, BION there are other fall sports than just FB. I'll be interested to see what the schedule looks like.

I think it is a given that, in particular, the non-revenue sports are going to see more regionalized/statewide travel than before most likely. That is, with athletic departments (like universities as a whole) being financially challenged like never before. IOW, while we may see some of it, I am doubtful we'll see the soccer teams traveling out to California for a couple of matches or the VolleyDukes traveling to 2 different tournaments that would require air travel.

In fact, the VolleyDukes in the past have tended to host early-season tournaments. I wonder if instead of having teams from around the country coming into the Valley, if we see a collection of Virginia programs and/or Mid-Atlantic based programs (to control costs). I guess at this point, it is the same question for these other sports like it is for FB. That being of course, will there even be a season - and, if so, what will it look like, when will it start/end, etc.

The NCAA will have to sound off at some point too, especially if there are modifications to the start/end of the seasons. I mean, for instance, will the Men's & Women's College Cup Soccer Final 4 be moved back or forward? Will the NCAA Volleyball Tournament be moved in dates/timing? Etc.

While I'm one that does not believe sports will be as scheduled in the fall, I hope we get as much practice time, as possible, in all are sports.

I think there will be big variances in how much practice time teams receive at different universities. Those that have more practice will likely have an advantage over those with less practice time.

Right. I don't see how any returning to practice can be done without NCAA guidance. Teams practicing earlier than others have a distinct advantage going into the season. Early practice matters. Teams that play their regular schedule have a big advantage over teams who delayed their season by canceling or postponing the first couple of games. I would love for Carolina to cancel or postpone their first two games against UCF and Auburn and meet us on 9/19 when we've had two games under our belt already. Ain't gonna' happen, but I can dream, right?

That's why I have always hated early bye weeks. Every team the rest of the season (that hasn't had a bye week themselves) has the advantage of a game's worth of reps, game experience, and improved team chemistry.

It seems like the NCAA would be all over this unfairness and mandating an earliest possible start of practice date. I believe they just haven't had enough time to get ahead of this.

I don't think the NCAA can mandate the same return date for all states because there is only so much they can handle/prepare for. I think the best they can hope to do is put forward guidelines, perhaps alongside the CDC, on testing rates, sanitizing protocols, and workout group sizes to limit exposure. In terms of when it will be same for schools in, say, Virginia vs schools in Maryland? That might depend on the individual state and their current infection situation.

Looks to me like the conferences are trying to create consistencies, which makes some sense I guess. i.e., all member institutions within Conference X can start reporting and/or practicing at Date Y...and, so forth. There may and likely will then be lots of inconsistencies and potential unfairness in non-conference matchups, if they even take place. I think whatever our concept of the "norm" will potentially (likely?) be thrown out the door for Fall 2020 and perhaps Winter 2021 until a vaccine is broadly available and administered. Meaning, anything goes and don't be surprised for the next 6 months if nothing looks or feels the same as the past. The athletics administrators (and university administrators as a whole) know full well the financial crunches they are under. Concepts like "fairness" I don't think are going to be as high a priority as they have been or should be. Just anything goes right now to stay afloat.

Side note, the ACC burned in a lot of revenue projections with their new ACC Network (talk about terrible timing). Meaning, a lot of money was spent on building new media technologies at each campus based on projected revenue from their contract with ESPN, along with other projects. I imagine the ACC will do everything it can to be playing ball this fall (if they can of course). I just mention this because some folks have brought up UVA, VPI&SU, and JMU's FB opponent UNCheat in other threads on this topic.

FWIW, here's a Twitter account folks should add to their Favorites to check daily/periodically... https://twitter.com/mattsarz?ref_src=tws...r%5Eauthor

Matt does a great job covering college athletics. He has a terrific site where he keeps up with CFB and MBB TV schedules (including streaming). You'll see updates on conference affiliations (a big subject on this board like many others) and he throws in some coverage of Formula 1, NASCAR, NBA, NFL, and MLB as well. With not much going on over the past 3+ months, he has branched out more than normal to cover almost anything sports-related.

(note, I have no affiliation to Matt and am not promoting him for any reason other than a site I've found over the years to include great information in a timely fashion...Matt will give his opinion and he retweets a lot of information about college athletics often with summarized info/opinion)

I was impressed by JMU’s plan for the student athletes’ return. I admittedly haven’t read any other schools’ plans to compare, so maybe it’s in line with what everyone is doing. However, it seemed welll thought out in respect to reducing the number of interactions each person would have. (Even down to using dorms like Hoffman with the shared bathroom rather than the hallway one.)

Can’t find the link to the plan anymore, but I’m sure someone has it still.

Saw today that Iowa paused ticket sales. Season tickets make up 48k of their 69k capacity, but it isn't known how many of those 48k have renewed. They're certainly preparing for the possibility of limited capacity, would be interesting to know how many they've sold.

NDSU football camp started June 1, so I guess they got a solid month head start on us (and maybe most of FCS)

Did any of the CAA schools already start?

I agree that was a good read, from the other thread:

I don’t believe anybody can officially open “camp” or have any formal team gatherings just yet. June 1st was the first day the NCAA authorized the athletes to be back on campus. And I think it’s only informal and voluntary sessions in the meantime. That said, the earlier the kids get together and develop camaraderie and chemistry obviously the better.

Yes, officially it was “voluntary” workouts starting on June 1, but quite a few of their players were chattering about it, and I’m sure it was strongly encouraged.

I'm guessing Nick Saban has already had 6 full scrimmages starting a 3am, but they were of course just "voluntary workouts". Like they say down in the SEC...

Isn't there a rule where the NCAA gave the football teams 2 more weeks of practice proceeding the fall games due to the lack of spring football?

Quote:According to Bourne and Dukes’ assistant athletic director for communications Kevin Warner, JMU football players will begin voluntary activity on July 6 and that the team’s training camp is on track to begin Aug. 7. JMU opens its season on Sept. 5 at home with a Colonial Athletic Association contest against Delaware.

The Dukes won the league outright and reached the FCS national championship game for the third time in the last four years in 2019.

Bourne said the men’s and women’s basketball teams will follow football with a report date of July 20. The other fall-sport athletes are expected to arrive again later this summer.

All three teams within a month. We'll see

I'll have students at JMU and at a school in C'ville in the fall. I follow the parent FB pages for both schools (good gawd, parents - let your kid figure out some stuff for themselves - but that's a story or another day) and I can tell you that UVa parents seem pleased that they will go straight through and be home for the semester by T'giving and JMU parents seem pretty disappointed that JMU isn't following the same path.

I think the reasoning is to not have the entire student body travel to their hometowns or elsewhere and then return back to campus a week later. Of course there's nothing preventing students from traveling back and forth on weekends, but I get the feeling that schools are going to try and discourage that.

I'm still waiting to see what the Virginia High School League is going to do. Recruiting will already be tough without camps to attend for high school kids. If their season gets cancelled or minimized, I'll feel bad for those kids and the college recruiters.
