Nah.

2009 was every bit as bad as Porter's seasons.

West had to go.

I'm reading a lot of revisionist history in this thread. You can claim all you want that "the decision had been made to turn football around before that speech", but that is a bunch of crap. RC was still the AD on that day. Shirley was still the President on that day. And for years to come.

Actually, Ike, Tommy didn’t make the schedule and he played two SEC or P6 teams seven of his nine seasons. The other two seasons he played only one. His first two seasons he went 8-15 with Rip’s players. Is in the books.

I seriously doubt Tommy West would expect nor accept any credit whatsoever for the program we have today. I think we all felt that rant, and I’m glad he put it all out there.

Rip left TW Wimprine and a lot of good players on the defensive side of the ball.

Fitchner brought in Deangelo Williams.

TW did ok and likely makes a bowl his first year if not for 4th and 27.

He gave us a glimmer of hope that the program might be much more than it had been.

Fuente deserves A LOT of credit.

Norvell was able to build on what Fuente did. He deserves A LOT of credit.

Now we shall see if Silverfield can recruit and coach or if he just won a popularity contest.

We'll get a hint this season (if there is one) a real good idea in year 2 and we'll know what we got in year 3. If he's as good as his two predecessors we'll be looking for another head coach after year 4 or 5.

RE: Thank You Tommy West
Rip was tasked with playing a hellacious schedule every season he was here, while Tommy was gifted much lighter slates. Yet, instead of piling up wins with the soft schedules, Tommy ultimately managed to take it backwards, and the fans bailed.

I know many liked Tommy’s good ol’ southern coach schtick, but he was not an upgrade from Rip... sans the hire of Fichtner. Too, had Rip selfishly elected to play Wimprine in 2000, instead of redshirting him, then we might have managed to beat UT that year and Rip would have managed to buy himself more time.

Tommy was more aggressive and Rip more close to the vest, but Rip’s recruits on the defensive side of the ball allowed Tommy to open it up offensively.

None of my friends or season ticket holders I knew wanted him so “ the fans” wanted him is a generalization. Maybe former players and some large donors had the loudest voice. I appreciate our former players but there was no indication he had the type of experience needed to revive a program. That proved to be a painful truth in his short two years with us.

RE: Thank You Tommy West
A certain Alumni group in particular was manipulated into a faction for Porter based on the theme of "we're taking back our program". Did not represent the entire group but it was a loud and vocal faction of that group with time on their hands. Agent had to develop a supportive faction as many associated with University were against doing business with him again. Skillful - he's good at what he does - he ended up with these people in the palm of his hands.

They even sat back and giggled when Caulkins (ironically) was used as a tool by Porter's agent to take a gratuitous shot at the son of the biggest supporter of U of M (school, athletic program and alumni jobs) as being unqualified to work for Jerry Gray. And a lot of them, who gained wealth and the ability to build families thru the very same guy, they looked the other way when Caulkins served his Master in the Commercial Appeal attacking the oldest son (a Marine officer) of this man as being a "little Lord Fauntleroy".

Remember him - he is presently the Offensive Coordinator of the Tennessee Titans.

I remember the attack columns, and Caulkins going after Smith and Gray. Did he really call him "Little Lord Fauntleroy"? That seems to go against Geoff's liberal code of conduct.

Anyone have a link to those columns from back then? Should be good for a laugh.

I guess that’s why they hired Larry Porter?

NO boards such as this one and a very vocal minority was the season for hiring Porter.

Yeah. Too bad there was no mt.org when Larry was hired. 03-lmfao

Oh, I was... For sure. I even said as much to my wife. Thank goodness the football gods shined down on us for that (and the previous) game.

The push to hire a former Tiger player was the main reason behind the hiring of Porter.

The decision was made before the job came open to go after Porter.

True point. I remember it as clear as day. I wasn't following Memphis football back in Porter's playing days, so the first I heard of him was from the continuous lobbying on this board. I got the sense that people felt he, being an alum, would be loyal to the program and not get poached.
