Nice...I'm willing to wager that some of those and perhaps some who will surface this season will finish on the All-MAC first and second squads. I'm geeked to see football coming back. They're at it today!

Alex told me these first few voluntary practices will focus on conditioning, particularly testing to determine where guys are and what they need to focus on so they can be in good shape when camp starts a few weeks from now. All this downtime, even though the guys were working on their own, could lead to stress injuries if they try to push too hard too soon. We want our guys to stay healthy!

Lets look at the WRs:

Jarius Grissom 6'2 210 Jr
Hassan Beydoun 5'8 170 Jr
Michael Thompson 6'5 195 Sr
Dylan Drummond 6'0 180 Jr
Quian Williams 6'0 190 Jr
Logan Giordano 5'11 170 So.

Walk ons
Jerermiah Jones 6'0 185 So
Tanner Knue 5'11 170 So
Noah Cameron 6'1 190 R-Fr.

New:

CJ Parks 5'10175 Jr
Rico Smith 6'0 180 Fr
Jacob Barrett 5'11 170 Fr
Kaiden Keefe 6'2 180 /Fr.
Xavier Smith 5'9 170 Fr.

Walk ons

Jent Joseph 5'11 165 Fr.
Kolton Malinzzak 5'7 150 Fr.
Bryce Sloan 6'2 170 Fr.
Zach Walling 6'3 200 Fr.

Good starters, depth may be a question if the starters get injured. Expect a couple of the true frosh in this group to redshirt. Parks was a key pick up.

BTW, the word 'depth' might be more important than usually stated in these threads.

There is a real possibility that some players could miss say one or two games following a + Covid test.

So now we have injury + the virus as reasons for a player to miss game(s) because of health reasons.

I'm not really worried about depth here.

It isn't hard to identify six players who have starter ability, including Parks.

A lot of depth at WR + TE. "Air Creighton"

Strongest position group on the team (and one of the top in the MAC) in my opinion. Beydoun, Williams, Drummond, and Grissom all have all-MAC potential. Then you added in Parks, who might be the best of the bunch....it is going to be fun to watch.

In terms of depth, I think Thompson should be a solid depth guy (hopefully we aren't having to go to our sixth WR though). Rico Small is probably a guy that could play this year if needed, but hopefully all the true freshmen can RS.

As we talked about, adding in the guys we have at TE with all the weapons at WR, this is actually an ideal year to have a new starter at QB. Four starters coming back on a good o-line with a ton of talented young guys to battle for that 5th spot. A vet with some experience (Parker) and some talent young guys (Smith and Boone) at RB. Whoever is able to win that spot will be in a position to have success. I still think it'll be Hutchinson, I know it was only one game, but he showed what he was able to do when running an offense with its full compliment of weapons. To do it against a pretty darn good Western team also says something.

"Sunshine Steve" shares your optimism.

I think we'll have some very good players who will be 2nd on the 2-deeps across the board on offense, be it WR, TE, OL, QB, etc.

P.S. I saw some highlights of QB Helbig when So. Utah played Pac-12 teams. He won't be intimated by MAC competition.

One of the thing I'll be following in recruiting is not counting number of recruits, stars, rankings, etc. but the DISTRIBUTION of recruits by position.

My take is that we have numbers at both OL and WR (for example).

WR has both numbers and very young class wise. And quite frankly WR is one position where a frosh could step in. It is so different than say OL where a player takes say 2 years to get his body fully filled out to play FBS ball.

That's the kind of thing that needs to happen. Some of the younger guys need to step up and contribute. We've got solid starters but little experience after that. With Jackson, Sexton, Dougherty, and Latu gone there are holes to fill. A kid like Knue has an opportunity.

RE: (Fake) spring ball thread
As many have pointed out the offensive line should be improved. Recall last year it was an area of concern and it did take us awhile to establish a consistent running attack. So the challenge this year is to get off to a better start.

Mike Van Hoeven 6'5 305 Sr.
Jake Donnellon 6'5 300 Sr.
Michael Smith Jr. 5'3 300 Sr.
Richard Bates, Jr. 6'3 290 R-Jr.
Zack Kadri 6'4 250 R-Jr.
Sidy Sow 6'5 325 Jr.
Brian Dooley 6'7 280 So
Marcellus Johnson 6'4 290 So.
Dimitri Douglass 6'4 300 So.
Alex Howie 6'4 305 So.
Jimi McAdams IV 6'5 315 R-Fr
William Racely 6'4 300 R-Fr
Broderick Jordan 6'3 290 R-Fr

walk ons
Zack Conti 6'6 300 R-Fr
Rafe Reyes 6'2 270 So
Lucas Tesznar 6'5 300 R-Fr.

Newcomers:

PJ Ross 6'4 255 Fr.
Coleon Smith 6'6 320 Fr.
Jason Eaton 6'7 350 Fr.
Mickey Rewolinksi 6'5 275 Fr.

walkons

Daniel Greene 6'4 320 Fr
Evan Egan 6'8 345 Fr.

Smith and Eaton may be talented enough for one of them to start but more likely redshirted. We are seeing a talent assembly line where talented frosh are redshirted and then progress.

Really like this group in 2020. Much improved. With a new QB this year the reliance on an Oline will be big to keep him upright and give time. This looks like the most depth we have had in a while. Van Hoeven and Donnelon will be great and I really like Howie and Raceley coming up. Dooley could end up being a 4 year starter when all is done and if he packs on 15lbs more he could get pro looks. Super excited to see how these guys compete and who comes out starting.

RE: (Fake) spring ball thread
Compared to the 2019 roster the specialist have "thinned" out a bit. Punting is in great hands with Jake Julien 6'2 210 Sr. who has improved every year and gives the defense great field position. Vying for the future is Max Chaffee 6'0 205 So and a true freshman Adam Heston 6'1 185.

Chad Ryland 6'0 185 Jr. Lets hope he becomes the next Dylan Mulder consistency wise. His kickoffs in the bowl were erratic. Which is why Caleb Richwine 6'2 175 R-Fr. handled them. Richwine looks like the heir apparent to Ryland.

Long snapper looks like Steve Bird 5'10 205 So. but Peyton Knight 6'1 200 a true frosh was brought in to challenge or be a backup.

Dylan Drummond handled both kickoff and punt returns. Need to find some alternatives there.

I agree with Julien and Ryland. Julien is very good and Ryland shows flashes, but as you said, just needs to be more consistent. Obviously he's made two huge (albeit fairly easy but stressful) kicks at Purdue and Illinois, and did a great job in the bowl game. Hopefully he can continue that momentum. If he could just get over some of those chip shots he tends to miss we'd be in great shot.

Drummond was fine as a return guy. I LOVE him as a WR and think he could be an all-MAC guy there, but I don't see him as a game-breaker type. I'd love to see Grissom get a chance to return punts, get him in space and he could make things happen. Although we obviously don't get to see practice day in and day out, and maybe some guys struggle with certain aspects and Drummond is the safe, reliable guy.

I think you forgot Rewolinski in the newcomers group. Between him, Smith, and Eaton that might be the most promising three o-linemen they have brought in for one class, all three had other power-five offers. A lot of young talent in this group.

Agreed. Probably the most depth we have had in a while. This is a super talented group that should be really competitive. Most importantly, they should be able to get really good Pass Pro and open holes for our new QB and also a new RB. I'm happy this group also has good experience with Sow, Van Hoeven, Donnelon and Dooley.

walk ons
Zack Conti 6'6 300 R-Fr
Rafe Reyes 6'2 270 So
Lucas Tesznar 6'5 300 R-Fr.

Newcomers:

PJ Ross 6'4 255 Fr.
Coleon Smith 6'6 320 Fr.
Jason Eaton 6'7 350 Fr.

walkons

Daniel Greene 6'4 320 Fr
Evan Egan 6'8 345 Fr.

Smith and Eaton may be talented enough for one of them to start but more likely redshirted. We are seeing a talent assembly line where talented frosh are redshirted and then progress.

I think you forgot Rewolinski in the newcomers group. Between him, Smith, and Eaton that might be the most promising three o-linemen they have brought in for one class, all three had other power-five offers. A lot of young talent in this group.

I did thanks I will fix it

Good starters, depth may be a question if the starters get injured. Expect a couple of the true frosh in this group to redshirt. Parks was a key pick up.

Thompson transferring out.

That is too bad. Makes the word on Knue that much more important. Hopefully one of the true freshmen is ready to go. As long as those top five guys all stay relatively healthy we should be fine at WR though.
