It's their chance to keep the name and change the logo to Admiral Akbar, Ole Miss, missed with their bear.

While also honoring one of the sources of income that helped build Las Vegas, before it was overshadowed by Payday and Car Title lenders.

A shark wearing a mobsters hat! And maybe one of those pencil thin mustaches.

To be honest, I don't know why they didn't change the nickname a long time ago. Why don't they call themselves the UNLV Explorers?? LaSalle is one of the few with that nickname and I don't hear griping to replace their nickname.

Yeah, we in Philly are still up in arms about the Explorernaut hehe.

Actually, the Philly school that did change their mascot was its community college. They got rid of the Colonial after what really was a tame and small request from students, and replaced it with a relevant in a very referential way, Lion. CCP moved its campus to the old US Mint building, which had these decorative lion casts, or so they say (they do, but what a stretch).

An earlier post referenced a generic bird. That’s not true. Schools spend plenty of money to fabricate a story why said bird has a link to the school or area. It’s not generic!

I thought of that play on words earlier, but I doubt the university would endorse the gambling image.

And as a basketball school, his catchphrase works.

But the native Americans already knew the land. He is an evil colonial.

True, most of the various Sharks in rugby are seaside places ... the Cronulla Sharks in the NRL are in a coastal Sydney suburb, the Durban Sharks in the rugby union Super 12 are in the busiest seaport in South Africa.

But OTOH, Las Vegas is the land of make-believe ... they have the sand, they are just pretending it is a beach.

If they want to go with a desert theme, Scorpions would be good.

A catfish actually wouldn't be a bad mascot for the Ole Miss Rebels. Certainly better than a bear or shark.

For UNLV, if the stink won't go away, keep the Rebels name and change the frontiersmen (who is ignorantly mistaken for a Confederate) to a bighorn sheep, sage-hen, tortoise, sidewinder, rattlesnake, or even the great Gila monster. There is no shortage of awesome desert creatures. I'd just keep the UNLV wordmark as the logo.

If the NCAA don't like it, they can use Ramblers but mean Gamblers.

"My mother was a tailor / She sewed my new blue jeans
My father was a gamblin' man / Down in New Orleans
Now the only thing a gambler needs / Is a suitcase and a trunk
And the only time he's satisfied / Is when he's on a drunk"

They could be the UNLV SJWS. UNLV on one side of helmet, SJWS on other side.

It was always a weird name for them.

Maybe they could use some Italian slur since the mob made Las Vegas. And they are tearing down Columbus. Hey, Notre Dame is the "Fighting Irish."

The Fighting Irish name arose out of pride for the Irish Brigade's heroics in the Civil War.

The Irish Brigade's chaplain, Father Corby, has a statue at Gettysburg and later became ND's president.

Besides, most Irish-Americans do not object to the name, quite the contrary. It is a source of pride, not a slur.

Try again.

Yeah, isn’t this the way? Rebel doesn’t have to be associated with the confederacy; change the logos. In Philly, I had to wonder when CCP changed the Colonial because it was “someone I wouldn’t root for,” as one critic said, to have him look like Ben Franklin and change it from “Phil” to “Ben,” a Colonial just becomes a word and you make the linkage to Franklin, money (the location of the current campus), and what Franklin represented.
