RE: No Southern Heritage Classic this year
Here's more info:
https://wreg.com/sports/southern-heritag...-concerns/
Quote:MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Organizers of the 31st Southern Heritage Classic announced the event has been canceled.

“I know this is a great disappointment to many who consider the SHC one of the major highlights of the year. The health and safety of our attendees along with that of our staff, sponsors, and others is a top priority. I encourage everyone to keep practicing recommended safety and social distancing measures so that we can return to our usual activities as soon as possible,” said Fred Jones, Founder of the Southern Heritage Classic.

The event was originally scheduled for September 10 through 12, and would have drawn over 75,000 fans from Jackson State University and Tennessee State University to the Bluff City for the game alone. Other events such as the tailgate at Tiger Lane and the annual parade through Orange Mound are also major attractions for locals and fans alike.

Organizers said refunds will be given for those who purchased tickets to the football game.

Not a good sign to cancel the classic. Hopefully, they'll still allow both Jackson State and Tennessee State play at the Liberty Bowl on that day, but just cancel the events. Sounds double standardish to play the Arkansas State game, but cancel the SHC.

I would think the issue has more to do with the other events, like the parade through the community. Also, the games are super packed. It was a decision by the SHC, not Memphis.

No double-standard at all. The SHC cancelled the game. The Un of Memphis is still "wait and see" on the season.

I really hope the football season isn't canceled but it most likely will be with players testing positive at other schools.

I believe they canceled because they will loose a bunch of money.

The number of people who usually travel into town for the SHC probably had more to do with that than anything.

If attendance is limited to 12-15k and not every event is doable, they had no choice but to cancel. If the Liberty Bowl is facing similar restrictions, I don’t see that happening either.

Without question. There is no TV revenue from this and the non-football game activities would probably violate social distancing protocols.

The issue with D-1 football is the TV revenue. That's going to be very, very difficult to pass up.

The TV ratings for South Korean baseball were quite high because people wanted a change of pace/something to watch that they couldn't in person.

My speculation is that if football happens, it is a conference season only. No OOC games.

All D1 schools would need to agree to push all OOC games 1 year, or to just wipe out OOC contracts for this year penalty free.

What is magical about the conference that doesn’t transmit COVID? And why doesn’t it apply to OOC?

As of right now games will happen. But I still think its more tentative than most people believe. I still think there is a scenario where we start the season and then have to shut it down in October or November. I hope I am wrong.

Right now the active cases rate is as follows Tennessee 33.3%, Arkansas 31.8% and Mississippi 21.2%. Those number should fall significantly in the next 10+ weeks

The best way to magically shorten a season by a few games is to eliminate OOC games.

RE: No Southern Heritage Classic this year
I think it was Jason Smith yesterday that said a one off game like the SHC would be almost impossible to pull off during the COVID restrictions. Just the logistics of who gets tickets vs who gets left out would be a terrible ordeal. Also, the tailgate, the parades, the bands, the pre and post game festivities are as important as the game, and those would all be cancelled or limited with current restrictions.
