Game Cancelled
Saw where the Southern Classic was cancelled...hope this doesn't become a trend. I know it's an FCS game...but it is a starting point most of us don't want to see become widespread...

The Bayou Classic won't be held in Nola for only the second time since 74

Yep. The Southern Heritage Classic was cancelled this morning. The Detroit Football Classic will also be canceled.

RE: Game Cancelled
Not a worrisome as FCS cancelling but UNC-Pembroke is not having any non-conference games and they cancelled their visiti to Winston-Salem State for 5 Sept, 2020. Both are DII programs. WSSU tried to move to the MEAC a few years ago but had to move back down to DII due to the costs involved.

I am betting that the additional COVID costs are starting to become apparent to a lot of cash strapped schools.

DII reduced the minimum and maximum number of games for each sport this year with football's maximum number of games being reduced to 10 contests.

RE: Game Cancelled
I expect many early season neutral site games will be cancelled unless it's a TV money maker.

Unlikely that this had anything to do with it. This game is a neutral site game thrown by a promoter. If you're promoting a game ticket sales are a big deal. Can't get but a third of the tickets max, plus whatever people choose not to show up, etc. You'd lose money. New Orleans has already said no to the Bayou Classic because it's a huge event and they know it's a dumb idea to have 100k+ people to descend on their city. If the New Orleans bowl was anywhere near as big as that game they'd likely cancel that one too. And this is really still if the season is even played.

And, even with big games like the neutral site game between Alabama and whoever. They will probably lose 2/3 of the ticket sales by having to make the stadium social distance approved.

RE: Game Cancelled
I wouldn't be shocked to see the same for smaller bowl games this year. So much of the bowl is based on tickets and sponsors. Lot's of companies pulling back their advertising dollars across the board. The was guarantee this happens is to have TXST get bowl eligible. Then the bowls will be cancelled to ensure further suffering for our fan base.

CNN is starting on their cancel football push. Got Fauci to talk about how risky it was. Considering most of our programs would face dire economic consequences without football. Let’s be glad Fauci doesn’t make policy

RE: Game Cancelled
With other sports playing, it won't get cancelled just based on that. MLS has had players test positive and they are still moving forward with a July 8th restart. There are two concerns for football. First is having fans. The State of Texas has said sports teams can have up to 50% capacity. So while this may be allowed I could also see individual teams or leagues banning fans altogether. Currently MLS and NBA are coming back without fans. The second hiccup could be the "second wave". If there really is a second wave in the fall, then you could see universities shutting down again which could kill off fall sports like what happened in the spring. I don't think we see another full shutdown of the country just because people will be mad. But cities and counties could be different. In Texas, Austin and San Antonio are requiring masks in businesses. So maybe fans can come back but have to wear masks. I just don't think the concern of spreading COVID is as big a deal for the teams because they can test easier then testing a bunch of fans. I would rather see sports with no fans then no sports at all. I have enjoyed watching European soccer.

Dan Patrick saying today that a source, who has had discussions with ADs, is claiming the BIG and the PAC12 won’t play non-conference.

Hmm. And that includes the biggest non-conference game in the country.

If everyone, and I mean everyone, would just wear a mask there wouldn’t be a problem. Unfortunately we all know that all not happen. On the positive side progress is being made on the treatment side. If they make enough progress on that end we might be able to muddle through with some sense or normalcy until a vaccine is available

RE: Game Cancelled
Masks help contain the spread, but pretending they stop it and are the solution to allow mass gatherings is inaccurate. Believing otherwise is accepting some spread is ok. Which may be the world we have to accept for the next 12-18 months. We lived with a certain level of risks in many different areas pre-covid, we are approaching that tactic again with this, which is likely healthy for overall humanity (mental health, economical health/viability of life).

See mask material effectiveness here:
