Help Needed: Top CBs in W&M History?
Of all the position groups, this one seems the hardest. If you were to select the top three CBs in W&M history (all-time dating back to 1893), who would it be?

B.W. Webb is a shoe-in, but the other two don't seem to be locks. I have my own ideas, but thought I'd run it by the experts here.

And we're not talking about DBs (no safeties) -- strictly talking about CBs.

Thoughts?

RE: Help Needed: Top CBs in W&M History?
My time with the Tribe is late 90s to today, with my real knowledge starting around 2002 or so.

I think Derek Cox has to be on that list. Highest drafted player in my time following the team (unless I'm blanking on something) in the 3rd round.

There's some weird bias here, but I always thought that if Ben Cottingham was a few inches taller, we'd be talking about him a lot differently. I'm not suggesting he should be on this list, but just a bit of a side observation.

Ron Harrison, Derek Cox, BW Webb, and Billy Parker have to be on your short list.

Parker - good call. Perhaps the most successful pro CB? Although in the CFL, he had a decent career.

Can't forget Mark Kelso who leads the Tribe with a record 20 career interceptions, nor a star from the '40s, Jack Bruce...who had 15 career picks for those great teams as well as a record 10 in one season (1947), And "Jumping Jack" (his nickname from that era of terrific nicknames) also played offense.

Kelso does not have the career interception record. We may not like who has it, but it is not Kelso.

Was Kelso a CB at WM? I don't recall. I know he was a safety with the Bills.

I agree with all the names so far in the thread. Always forget about Parker. He was a real good one.

I though Kelso was a FS. Before my time

Kelso was a safety exclusively.

Tribal has it right with Webb, Harrison, Cox and Parker. Deandre Houston-Carson was an outstanding corner his first three years before switching to safety his senior year.

RE: Help Needed: Top CBs in W&M History?
Lots of this post is going from memory from a long time ago...but in the late '80s or early '90s (I think) there was a really good freshman walk-on defensive back (don't remember whether he was a cornerback or a safety). He had a phenomenal year. He was rewarded with an offer for half a scholarship for the next year. That lack of a full scholarship after the year he had really pissed him off and so he quit the team in protest. My understanding at the time was that he did not transfer but rather stayed at W&M -- however, I don't know if that continued to be true for his junior and senior years. Anyway, does anyone remember his name or any other details? Always seemed a shame to me to lose out on such a great player because of half a scholarship. Who knows, he might have been a top 5 name for this list if he had kept playing.

Possibly Carey Caldwell? The story you post is one I recall hearing about him.

That name sounds familiar. Maybe somebody who played back then will definitively know. Thanks.

Before my time, but sounds like Caldwell. I didn't look for stats, but found an article showing the impact he had playing as a true freshman in 1990. It is the only year he is listed on the Tribe all time roster and I didn't see his name listed playing elsewhere during that era. So, it jibes with the story.

Thanks for posting! According to the article, that Bucknell game was his first start but the seventh game of the season. I think that I will scope around and try to find some statistics.

As an aside to the article, it said Carey Caldwell replaced JD Gibbs in the lineup due to injury. JD was the son of hall of fame Redskins coach Joe Gibbs. After graduating, he worked for his dad's racing team until his way too early passing in 2019.

As an additional aside, my high school girlfriend dated JD while living in Oakton. So, I win this 5 degrees of separation.
