RE: DI Sports Casualties - a running list
Urbana's D1 Men's volleyball is dropped as the school is closing for good because of COVID-19. Men's volleyball is not a championship sport at D2.

RE: DI Sports Casualties - a running list
Wright State cutting Men's and Women's Tennis and Softball has two implications:
1) Wright State is below NCAA minimum
2) Horizon League now only has 5 Men's Teams and 7 Women's Teams. Detroit had dropped Tennis at the end of last season.

Tennis seems like a weird one to drop to me, I'd think it's a relatively cheap sport

For some reason, most people throughout the NCAA on tennis scholarships are international students. I'm not sure why that is. But yeah, if they recruited local people instead, they'd probably lose every game, but would save a lot of money.

Tiffin drop Equestrian. Not sure if they are any D2 championships. Just only a few schools.

They weren't a NCAA member in the sport. Belonged to a different association, looks to be more club type.

I guess not a lot of Americans care to play that in college. UCSB's women's tennis roster this year was entirely comprised of eight international players, although one attended high school in Illinois.
UCSB's men's team only had one American-born player on their roster, plus a player who was born in London but grew up in New York. Just one of those things, I guess.

If you're recruiting international for a minor Olympic Sport, then I think it's time to pull the plug. Those are seats which if sold to paying foreigners bring real money. Waste of scholarship.

That's a bit harsh. I see nothing wrong with recruiting internationally, minor sport or otherwise. Bringing in students from overseas is one way to increase awareness.
Stu, UC Riverside hoops this year featured six California players, five from Australia and New Zealand, two Texans and one Illinois native. In their case, this is the right way to go.

Both have about double the number of roster spots as scholarships.
For NAU:
Men's: 2 Arizona, 2 other US, 4 international
Women's: 2 Arizona, 6 international
Women's Golf: 3 Arizona, 4 international

Since when is hoops a minor Olympic Sport?
That was my qualification. You may need to update your reading glasses prescription.

I certainly do need new specs. But I'd like your two cents on UCR recruiting nearly as msny Aussies and Kiwis as in-state players.

I can answer that. The UCR head coach is from Melbourne, Australia. He recruited Ben Simmons to LSU and Patty Mills and Matthew Dellavedova to St. Mary's. He was an assistant coach at St. Mary's under Randy Bennett, where they had a pipeline to Australia for basketball talent.

Well stated. Getting back on track, however, what I was asking for is Stu's opinion on a public institution recruiting a balanced number of foreign players and in-state. Does he approve of such recruiting? Especially from a California institution?
In any case, bringing in international students who want to play sports is a good thing. Doesn't warrant pulling the plug on minor sports, as Stu put it.

I agree and I think the bottom line is winning. UCR just had their second winning season in 19 seasons at the D1 level, so I think Patrick has them going in the right direction.

Tennis is the easy sport to cut since it is hard to travel from one country to another by plane during this pandemic. The international students don't want to take the risk because Trump was in a hurry to reopen everything.
