RE: W&M's Greatest WRs of ALL-TIME
This one is more difficult than the RB one. In the olden days the position was "end" and they played on the line. You then got to the concept of split end and tight end and then to wide receiver and slot receiver. The modern passing game didn't emerge until the 70s and 80s, but even then teams still ran a lot of veer option and wishbone at the college level.
The one player that I remember that could be on the list is David Knight. We ran more than we passed in those days, but he was pretty amazing. Fast and had great hands. He had a couple of seasons in the NFL if I remember correctly.

I would second David Knight. The offense was much different and it was a bit more of an accomplishment to put up the numbers that he did. I believe that he played for the Jets for 5 years at the end of the Namath era there.

I don’t remember Conklin and Whipple as well, they were at the very beginning of my Tribe fandom. Otherwise, totally agree with this list. Rich and Dominique hold special places in my fandom as well... Rich is the first memorabilia I got (signed jersey) and Dominique was one of my first (second if I’m being specific) “our around town” encounters with a gracious Tribe player.

W&M's Greatest WRs of ALL-TIME
Rich is on my Mt. Rushmore of Tribe football greats.
Jon Grimes is another lock.
Probably pick Webb, Pinball, Campbell, Knight, Tracy, or Sharper (disqualified) for the other two. Again, going back 30 years or so.

Vito Ragazzo deserves a couple of extra credit points for having such a cool name. Another receiver that I really liked but who was not mentioned is Harry Mehre.

During the Levy era we had George Pearce leading nation in receptions and Jim Cavanaugh who went on to be a great recruiter for Tech

Rich is an easy number 1. I'd have DT a few spots lower only because he had a special senior yr, but took a while to develop. I'd swap Chris Rosier for Whipple.
I'd go Mush, Conklin, McBride, DT, Rosier. Sure I'm missing others.
Always a shame we didn't have better QB play during McBride's time. His numbers don't reflect the level of his talent.

Really good background here -- I kept seeing "End" come up in the research, but honestly didn't have much of an idea of what it meant.
David Knight and Harry Mehre are the two "snubs" we're hearing most on our WR list.
At the end of this content series, we're going to compile a list of the most-mentioned "snubs" and retroactively add them to the list in another article!

Rich is definitely the best Tribe receiver I have ever seen. Like Tribal, last 35 years.
I also agree on Grimes as a top 4 Tribe player. Not sure about the other three as there are lots of great candidates. If a WR makes it in the top 4, Rich is it.

Agree on McBride, the QB struggles affected DeVonte Dedmon too, although I think Tre was a overall better player. Both of those guys made some amazing catches in their time with the Tribe. DeVonte was a better returner.

Remember also that the end usually played both ways as the DE on the other side. Same with the backs and backers. QB sometimes played safety and often punted. T formation, etc.

Yeah. I know these lists are highly personalized, but I feel like Lou Creekmur should be on the list, if reaching all the way back.

I am going to see if I can find some more information on David Knight. Admittedly, I don't know anything about him.
Lou Creekmur not only was a great player, his Tribe years won me $250 in a national CBS sports trivia contest years ago.

First off, David was a heck of a nice guy, soft spoken, friendly. I got to know him his Senior year, when we had two classes together.
He was the "go to" receiver for Steve Regan (Lou Holtz) and then Billy Deery (Jim Root).
He had 44 receptions his senior year, averaging 16.4 yds per catch, with 6 TD's (he also scored 1 TD on a running play).
The thing about David was, if it hit his hands, it wasn't going anywhere. They were like tar paper.
His best season (of 5) for the NY Jets was probably 1974. He had 40 receptions for 4 TD's and averaged 14.5 yards per catch.
He now lives in Trieste, Italy.

RE: W&M's Greatest WRs of ALL-TIME
Lou Creekmur, Buster Ramsey, and Jack Cloud are three of the All-Time greats that have to at least be considered in any all-time W&M top-5 list.
Buster and Jack are college hall of famers (our only ones, as far as I know); Creekmur is our only NFL HOFer.
Of course, none of us here knew them or saw them live, but I'm sure Tribe alums of old would put these guys against any current-era player.

Rosier, if only for the Hampton play. His knee was NOT down.
