New Memphis Start date for Classes - will disrupt Football
Just FYI

1) Rudd moved the start date of classes to August 17th this year, which is two weeks earlier.
2) This removes two weeks of football camp which is essentially all day practices
3) By losing two weeks because of the start of school the players will be in school for which the NCAA mandates limitation on hours to practice. From all week to 10/12 hours a week, I can't remember exactly.
4) Huge loss for a team that had no spring practice with HC change and new OC, DC and a lot of new position coaches
5) Key: Tigers will have only 3 or so days in pads before their first game if the games start on time

Not all schools are facing this only the ones that started earlier

Just FYI

I'm sure Rudd has his reasons.

Academics comes before athletics.

Agree 100%
Not a knock on Rudd but limitations on our team vs other potential teams who do not start earlier is all.

Expectations

Also, look for not playing any non conference games potentially or any non conference games that involve significant travel - almost a certain bet they will not happen this year. Some teams could only play 9 games, some 10 etc

Not all states are going to allow football this season. The ones that do, I think most of those schools will start early to finish the semester by Thanksgiving, rather than mid-December. In that case, most of those playing football will be in the same boat.

And if not, the safety of the full student population is more important than full football practice, since it is thought that the winter might bring a Phase 2 to coronavirus. Just something else to deal with in these weird times.

absolutely, reason for post was fyi and it will effect Memphis more because we have all new coaches and new defense and tweeks on offense but did not have a spring - vs other schools with same systems and coaches - there is the difference

also forgot to add: these are state by state decisions - the state health department is involved - whatever the path we are following all schools in Tennessee must follow

Upside: example - if we play (I can't remember the schedule) Tulsa, Tulane or East Carolina where they do not sell a lot of tickets - we will be able to travel to them. will not be available in schools that sell a ton of tickets like sec games

I really don't see Fall sports happening anywhere unless a 23rd-hour miracle happens. Several players at other schools, Arkansas State, Texas Tech, Alabama-just to name a few, have already had players to test positive for COVID-19 and this is without full contact. It is going to become a liability for not only the University but the NCAA too.

I at this point agree

I see a high probability things will not start on time
I see a good probability they start in October or later

We have to keep in mind - if the decision is for universities to be on line - there will not be football period.

Don't be confused if you read "Oklahoma is planning to have fall classes" the "Planning" is used to keep people enrolling because the estimates are as much as a 19% drop in the fall for classes anticipating on line and universities can't take that financial hit. I personally do not see classes in person in August. That is ten weeks away

we should try to get out of one of our non-conference games that would require travel and play tennessee in nashville. both teams couild just get on buses in the morning, play mid afternoon and get on bus after game to go home.

Starting classes on August 31 would've been a late start. With that being said, I would anticipate classes starting on August 24, moving it up to the 17 would be just one week. However, the good news for Memphis is all schools are dealing with the same exact issue, not just the Tigers.

Another option being considered is allowing two-a-days again. To give teams practice hours to catch-up. Ironic, since that was outlawed for safety reasons.
