(05-29-2020 10:18 AM)Itinerant Texan Wrote:  Tarleton Football had the #3 attendance in all of D2 last season. Memorial Stadium currently (after recent expansion) holds 10,000, so they averaged 90% capacity at 8,952 per game, with rival games against WTAMU and Commerce going way over capacity.

As a conference the LSC had 4 teams in the Top-10. If the WAC is looking for more D2 football-playing schools to move up, look no further than the LSC. Especially WTAMU.

"The Texans had the highest total attendance and per-game average of any team in the Lone Star Conference this season, ahead of Midwestern State (6th / 7,703), West Texas A&M (7th / 7,646) and Texas A&M-Commerce (8th / 7,450). As a conference, the LSC finished second in Division II with 250,736 total attendance and averaged 5,117 fans across nine institutions."

Yeah, being a Coach in the state of Texas who regularly talked with all size college coaching staffs, attended D1 NCAA tournaments multiple times, includes 3 final fours... I have no idea what I am talking about. Ok Boomer.

Those were LSC coaches? Or were you saying that by being D2 we wouldn't know anything about any D1 coaches?

My apologies to wisdomgymrat. I was mad at one Tarleton poster and took it out on him. Disregard my flippant post...

Because that's not going to elicit a response. You're better than that.

I already apologized. BTW, what the heck does being a Coach "in the state of Texas" have to do with anything? Texas carries more weight than other states?

Ranking Chris Jans below Bryce Drew tells me how clueless you are
. Jan’s is number one and it’s not even close. Drew sucked at Vanderbilt and Gillespie was successful a loNg time ago.

Before you get your panties in a bunch and get all emotional, just take a moment to look a little deeper. We're about to see just how savvy Jans is when he faces some real coaching. He's enjoyed some success in the WAC, I'll give him that, but it really ain't saying much with NMSU's talent and institutional advantage. 1 year in the MAC (big whoop).
I'll take SEC and BIG 12 experience over MAC and WAC, any day of the week. He definitely hasn't earned the title of best coach on this list. Not by a long shot.

D1 NCAA Experience & Record:
BCG: 256-148 (SEC, BIG 12, WAC)
Bryce Drew: 8 yrs, 164-108 (SEC, HORIZON)
Chris Jans: 4 yrs, 104-29 (MAC, *Watered Down*WAC)

NCAA Tourney Games & Record:
BCG: 7 (3-4) *Including Sweet 16
Drew: 5 (2-3) *Also 2017 NIT Runner-up
Jans: 2 (0-2) *0-3 if not for COVID 19

Jans and NMSU defeated a Jim Larranaga led Miami team when they were undefeated and 6th ranked in the nation in Hawaii. Jans and NMSU defeated a Brad Underwood led Illinois team in Chicago. Jans and NMSU defeated a Ben Howland led Mississippi State team in Jackson, Mississippi this past year. Also, with less talent, Jans' NMSU team only lost by 2 to a Bill Self led Kansas team in Kansas City (when they were nationally ranked #2) and lost by 1 to a Final Four bound Auburn team led by Bruce Pearl. Chris Jans is very much on these P5 coaches level when it comes to court side coaching. NMSU smaller's recruiting budget will always put Jans and our Aggies at a disadvantage when playing P5 schools. Keep in mind, most of BCG tourney success was at Texas A&M; a P5 school.

Yes but BCG turned A&M around. Like a 180-degree type turnaround.
He also took UTEP from 6-24 in 2002-2003 to....
"Although the Miners were predicted to finish ninth in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) for the 2003–04 season, UTEP instead captured their first conference title in 12 years. The team finished 24–8 and received a bid to the 2004 NCAA Tournament. The 18-win improvement was the best in Division I basketball that season, and one of the best in Division I history.
What about Drew at Valparaiso? Non-Power 5, posted Jans-esque numbers while there, 2 tournament wins, NIT runner up.
To say Jans is head and shoulders above these guys is lunacy.

To say Jans is head and shoulders above these guys is lunacy.

And, Chris Jans turned around Bowling Green in just one year. The one season (the 2014-15 season) Jans was at Bowling Green, he guided them to a 21-12 record to a trip to the CIT post season tournament. In the year prior, the previous coach Louis Orr, finished that season with a 12-20 record. And, only had one winning season in seven years. So, for a first year head coach who had never coached in Division 1 prior, Jans turned the Bowling Green program around by 9 games from the season prior. And, after he left (was fired), it took his successor (Michael Huger) four years until Bowling Green had a winning season again. Huger has yet to see post season play. That 2014-15 season was the most recent trip Bowling Green has made a post tournament. Keep in mind Jans took over a program that had no basketball tradition; only going to the NCAA tournament 4 times (1959, 1962, 1963, and 1968) in its history. Because of his effort, Chris Jans was awarded the Joe B. Hall National Coach of the Year; for the best coaching season by a first year coach.

In Chris Jans first three years at NMSU, he has been selected the WAC Coach of the Year all three years. NMSU has won the WAC regular season championship all three years. Gone to the NCAA Tournament two years; and was well on its way to a third. And, in these years, Jans tied NMSU's single season win mark at 28 wins. Then broke it the following season with 30 wins. While at NMSU he has won 82.8% of his games and 93.3% of his WAC games (only 3 losses in 3 seasons). And currently, before COVID19 abruptly ended this past season, NMSU was in the midst of a 19 game winning streak; which includes a win over Mississippi State (58-52) in Jackson, MS and a complete annihilations of WAC 2nd place Cal Baptist (83-50) in the final regular season game of 2019-20.

I could agree with Itinerants list. It's more of an "on paper" ranking though. But Pistols is more current. Honestly I think BCG best days are behind him. I don't see very many coaches peaking then falling off the face of the earth then peaking again.

Do you guys understand how hard it is to get kids to come to Ranger Texas and play basketball? Next to the Permian Basin, Ranger is the armpit of the state. Be it with a little controversy, but the dude can coach and recruit.

RE: Rank the WAC men's Basketball Head Coaches...
Barnes for Bakersfield was SEC coach of the year and National coach of the year at Ole Miss and had a very mediocre career in the WAC. So what Drew and Gillespie did ages ago does not impress me. Drew was 0-18 in conference play his last year at Vanderbilt and Gillespies coach of year was followed by a very mediocre performance.

But hey. We can debate till the cows come home but when the Aggies throttle year after year Tarleton like we have mighty GCU and their celebrity coach (ex-coach suing them) we will see who has the last laugh.

Do you know how hard it is to recruit to Las Cruces? I will go out on a limb and say a lot of jucos are located in places similar to a Ranger college. Plus BCG is a name coach in the juco ranks. Apparently no one on this board knows who Jans is. Las Cruces is a small town in a poverty stricken state. We are 45 minutes from a large metropolis and large D1 institution. Jans is doing all this at the D1 level, not juco.

Jans won a National Title at the JuCo level as the head coach at Kirkwood CC in Iowa. Did BCG win a natty? Never mind that it’s a JuCo.

Ok, ok... no matter what I say, NMSU has it harder, has the better coach, and is far superior than every team/college in the conference.

It’s like y’all are the UT of the WAC

Hard to argue 16-0 in conference play, haven’t lost to a WAC team in over a year.

Nevermind that it's a JuCo.

Jans won a National Title at the JuCo level as the head coach at Kirkwood CC in Iowa. Did BCG win a natty? Never mind that it’s a JuCo.

Notice I haven't knocked Jan's lengthy stay at the Juco level. Juco basketball aint no joke. Alot of top talent comes up through the Juco ranks, coaches included. Again though, BCG completely turned around Ranger, had them in the natty game last year, knocked off the No. 1 team, and won Coach of the Year. Was well on his way to another deep run when he took the Tarleton gig. There's a pattern of success with both coaches, its just that BCG has done it at the highest level. BCG>Jans
