I see. So, I should be excluded from participating in discussions on this board?

Not that it matters, but I would like to say even though I said I hope this doesn’t turn into a political thread, (if the board rules allow it) I don’t mind these discussions happening and I am glad they are. I know that I’m contradicting myself but I don’t want it to seem like I don’t want these issues to be talked about because they absolutely should and need to be discussed. Personally, I will not offer any opinions on here because I like to keep it to JMU on this board personally, but I don’t fault anyone who participates. That’s my weak disclaimer and I’m taking the easy way out but keep expressing yourself to anyone who wants to. 07-coffee3

Yeah for what it's worth, I'd say I have a pretty similar outlook on it. I think it's great to discuss social and political issues with people you don't agree with, but I also don't really think it should be too frequent of a thing on a sports focused message board to the point where it's hard to enjoy discussing sports with each other.

As far as this specifically, I think Cig's statement is great and I'm really glad he didn't "all lives matter" it. This time really seems to have a lot more companies, public figures, etc. going with that type of statement which is great to see but it's also a little weird to me that none of the tons that came before George Floyd pushed people to that point. I guess maybe just a matter of how brutal and hard to watch this one was and especially to see police slowly kill another man as he yells out that he can't breathe after it already happened to Eric Garner.

I grew up in the 60's &70's in rural Pennsylvania. The first black person I ever met was the first student ever to go our HS. He knocked my front tooth out playing BB. (he ended up playing at Pitt) Back then the word "Racist" had a specific meaning, carried a lot of weight unlike today were the definition seems subjective and the word gets throw around similar to "ummm like....." when someone struggles to find the right word to use.

The 80's, 90's and 2000's I saw humanity evolve into a more tolerant, adjective society. It seems to me the past 15 or so years we've become MUCH more racially, socially and politically divided than I can ever remember. I don't know why. It's like the harder we ALL try with mutual respect, the more divided we become.

I understand and respect what Cig was trying to say but like most of us, he worked too hard to be socially correct to the point of being awkward. We are all wounded, we could all use some trust and respect.

Social media. More people can see, hear, post and argue about injustices and differences of opinion than ever before

Yes. There is no evidence that I have seen that indicates race had anything to do with it. Abuse of power by police officers is totally uncalled for, but stoking the fires of racism does not help.

And, I don't want this to be a political issue. It isn't. It is purely social. Our police MUST do better.

Purple said Nooch was better QB than Andy Dalton; I'm not sure I want him focused on athletics either.

EDIT: I feel bad but that was an easy dig. Let me balance it with the fact that Purple was also pro-Nooch when many on this board were not.

Can you speak further to this? I don't understand what you think the current definition of racism seems to have become in your opinion.

Yep, I stand by the statement. I believe that Nooch is better than Dalton who stunk up the field last year on the worst team in the NFL. I don't see him suddenly becoming Tom Brady. I have watched plenty of Andy Dalton. TCU is 40 minutes from my house. I personally think his career is on the downhill slide at best.

If Dak holds out, I believe Dalton will get the start due to experience. But, I also expect him to not do so well and guess who the next man up will be. I believe it will be Nooch. If, in fact, those stars do align, the rest is up to Nooch.

Keep in mind that Nooch hasn't even made the roster yet. While Dallas usually keeps two QBs on the roster, Mike McCarthy has a history of keeping three, and this year would be a good year to keep three as Dalton is coming off a pretty bad season and who knows where the heck Dak is going to be.

As I have been saying, Nooch is on the perfect team. May the stars align in his favor.

Dalton will be on the roster when the season starts. Ben is "nooch" more uncertain.

But getting back to the thread - I do share the same thoughts and opinions as the JMU Coaches and AD in this article..

I'm more in the Candace Owens camp on this. And, please, by all means, find the racism in the Floyd case. I'm sure you can, even though the prosecutors, all the way up to the state AG, have not been able to find any sign of racism.

And, one of the officers charged, Thomas Lane, appears to be half black. I'm not sure, but assuming he is, do you give him a pass because he is half black and can't possibly be racist, or do you just give him half a pass for his black half, his white half certainly being racist. THAT is how stupid this has become and inventing racism where there is none only serves to deepen the divide. Congratulations on that!

Charges upgraded on Chauvin. Are they overcharging now?

I don't think so. Murder 2 is much closer to Murder 3 than to Murder 1. Pre-meditation and intent are absent in both 2 and 3. If there was the slightest hint of racism in this case, it would absolutely be Murder 1. However, the prosecution has wisely not charged that because they understand that that will result in an acquittal. My opinion.

Don't think that is really for you or anyone else to determine.

How about we quit trying to create an arguement on a JMU Sports Message Board and just let the legal system take its course and stick to JMU Sports discussion and opinions.

There are tons of other venues dedicated to this topic.......if that is your desire to give hour by hour or day by day updates on NON JMU SPORTS topics.......please do so there.

The Admins should be nipping this entire off topic discussion in the bud.

Interesting. I don’t pay close enough attention to murder cases. Do proven racists get charged with premeditation due solely to their racism? I figured it couldn’t really go higher than murder 2 because it’s not like that dude woke up planning to kill someone (you wouldn’t think).

Exactly my point. If it had been overt racism, that would be evidence of intent, malice, and pre-meditation. That did not exist. The prosecution has charged as high as they can to hope for a conviction, which I expect they will get, giving Derek Chauvin the life expectancy of a Mayfly.

It’s so absurd to think that race isn’t a factor in these police killings just because you can’t prove race was a factor in each individual case. Sure racism isn’t the only issue with police, but I don’t get how you could not think those issues are amplified whenever the police are dealing with a black person and not think that racism is a huge issue there. Then you assert that someone part black couldn’t be a part of anything racist in the same post you mention Candace Owens.

Well, I hate to break it to you, Scotty, but that is the way the law works, and for good reason. You are not allowed to "think" that race is a factor. You must prove it. There is absolutely no proof in this case or even a hint of evidence.... so far.

Actually, I'm waiting for someone to claim that they once heard a classmate of Chauvin allege that a friend told him or her that Chauvin once uttered the N word in the third grade. BOOM! Murder 1.

I think we should just cut to the chase and execute Chauvin now. Why are we bothering with a trial? That only gums up the gears of justice.

Yes, Purple, tell us more about racism and the n-word. You have properly read the room as well as the national climate and have correctly determined that now is definitely your time to shine.

I'm not even talking about race being a factor in the Floyd case specifically and about wanting that cop charged accordingly, I'm talking about the fact that you don't think racism is part of the issue in police brutality. Yes there are more issues besides race, if you haven't seen the video of the police killing Daniel Shaver then go watch that, it'll make your stomach turn... But it's nuts to think racism isn't a problem in police brutality. George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Eric Garner, Philando Castile, Walter Scott, Alton Sterling, Terence Crutcher, Freddie Gray just to name a handful... You're telling me you don't think any of them would still be alive if they were all white? I bet most of them would, if not all of them.

I have no intention of trying to create an argument but just food for thought: (NONE of this stuff makes any sense to me and I'm sad)

White cop kills black guy (Mr. Gray) so it's assumed to be race related based on the actions of the peaceful protesters and the thugs assaulting people, burning and stealing stuff.

Would the same uprising be happening if the killer cop was black that killed Mr. Gray?

How about if the killer cop was white and killed a white suspect?

There are more white people killed by police than there are black people killed by police. Names of black victims are being mentioned a lot lately but no so much with white victims. I suppose mentioning all lives lost from law enforcement doesn't meet the objective.

Every minute of every day there are cops serving the people doing great things. They aren't on the news, facebook, twitter but a couple times a year we get a POS cop....Poof, fuel for the fire.

Piece of crap people come in all sizes, shapes and colors just like great people come in all sizes, shapes and colors.

Again, I don't want to fight, I think most of us have seen enough of that the last couple of weeks. It's like some peoples hearts are telling them something different than what there brains are. The phrase "United we stand, divided we fall" is becoming very significant to me.

I pretty much understand and agree with the Athletics positions but I'm not sure where I'm at with JMU taking a public position on this. I guess I will need to decide before I write that check in the next few days.

My opinion.

Interesting. I don’t pay close enough attention to murder cases. Do proven racists get charged with premeditation due solely to their racism? I figured it couldn’t really go higher than murder 2 because it’s not like that dude woke up planning to kill someone (you wouldn’t think).

If it were racist, it would be pre-meditated.

Disagree, but I understand that logic. Don’t think it would fly as a concept in most courts though.
