My thought is this is something the CAA will explore. We are scheduled to travel out of state to Stanford, URI, Lafayette, and UNH. I bet we punt Stanford, play JMU & UR twice, and keep our bus ride to Lafayette.

CAA bandaiding underway. Linked article almost makes one think Charleston would be better off in a league with more schools in North and South Carolina.

interesting article... but what is the point of having a conference if you don't play each other?

Good questsion. I wouldn't think that W&M and JMU would be too far to travel, but I guess a line has to drawn somewhere. I would have thought UNCW, ELON W&M & JMU would all be driving distance.

I would presume that what is good for Charleston is good for W&M.

Therefore, here’s looking at you, Richmond and VCU. Zero excuses in these times.

It's only for this season. My question is whether they will be eligible for the post season.

Florida A&M is likely leaving, Bethune Cookman might follow, NC A&T is leaving, Hampton left, Savannah State is leaving. Would the CAA have any interest in Howard? Respected private school in the DC area. Facilities aren't great, but having more games in DC would be a benefit to almost every CAA school.
CAA school averages - 16,926 enrollment, 62% acceptance rate, and 78% graduation rate

Of the MEAC schools, Howard is the only one approaching a CAA level school. Of all the current schools, it is the only school...
a) in the bus-to-game footprint.
b) Has solid academic standing (graduation rates > 50% and acceptance rates < 50%).
c) Is of a sufficient size

Howard (Washington DC) 9,139 enrollment - (32% accepted/62% grad)

Other MEAC in footprint
Norfolk St (Norfolk VA) 5,204 (90%/37%)
NC A&T (Greensboro NC) 12,142 (61%/53%)
NC Central (Durham NC) 8,207 (47%/46%)
Morgan St (Baltimore MD) 7,712 (66%/39%)

Interesting juncture for HBCUs. Financially strapped in the near term but possible recipients of future revenue winds in their sails.

https://sports.yahoo.com/mikey-williams-...47572.html

There is the potential for higher profile recruits as mentioned in linked article. But also am reminded that benefactor of Howard's golf program is an NBA player of some renown who attended Davidson on a basketball scholarship. Could see donations from other professional athletes materialize for HBCUs in present environment.

It's also worth noting that the scheduling machinations underway in Big East, A10 and CAA point out how prescient Hampton leadership was in its move to Big South. These are people who didn't need a pandemic to persuade them that their MEAC travel costs made no sense.

Am hopeful Wm & Mary leaders are accumulating and analyzing data that will allow them to skate where the proverbial puck will be regarding conference affiliation and won't rule out any HBCUs if the data lead in that direction.

Am curious to see if elite basketball and football players will end up at HBCUs in significant numbers. Would make them more attractive conference members.

There is definitly the big push for it right now. While the heart might be there to attend HBCU, to me, it is a harder sell with glaring differences in facilities, support staff, and often academics. I could see more of the one and done 5*s like Maker doing it. They weren't planning on staying at whichever school they chose anyway.

Theoretically, if one and dones are successful at HBCUs, they'll give back and maybe start narrowing the gap. A real difference maker could be some coaches going there, as well.

There is a huge difference in the HBCUs amongst themselves in terms of academics, facilities, etc. Howard is on the higher end, in a great city, etc. I could see something like happened at Georgetown 35 years ago at an HBCU. You just need the right coach and support from the college and community.
