Trustee discussion on fundraising and endowment. Mentioned Florida A&M once had $120M endowment but gradually declining. Athletics up next after this discussion. There's a Q&A link at the bottom where you can type a question.

Someone just utilized the Q&A feature:

SJG 04:00:08 AM
Was the move to the SWAC approved or is a vote still pending?

That issue will be addressed in the Athletics Committee, which should begin in a few minutes.

Graph showing yearly endowment. Was $125M on 6/30/19, now $117M on 4/30/20. Dr Friday saying COVID played a role.

One trustee talking about investment strategies, throws out the idea of dipping into another $10M of the endowment. This would take FA&M's endowment from $125M to $107M.

AD talking about basketball coaches. MBB coach's contract expired in May 2020. He's proposing a 3-year extension. FAMU went undefeated at home, had its "biggest win in school history" over Iowa St, and raised its APR by 100 points.

Still no talk about conference affiliation yet.

AD going over the MEAC vs SWAC slides in this powerpoint.
http://www.famu.edu/BOT/Athletics%20BOT%...Final_.pdf

He is not a good speaker. He just parrots what the slides say and doesn't expand.

He also keeps saying "fan empathy" instead of "fan apathy".

Game vs Southern generated $285k revenue.
The highest MEAC game generated $75k revenue.

AD is presenting the travel matrix slide but this is poorly done.

He's using flight travel times for 6 SWAC schools but bus travel times for all 9 MEAC schools.

That is a poor comparison and not a good use of information.

RE: GDT: Florida A&M BOT Meeting (6/3 & 6/4)
So now AD gives a 5-year revenue projection SWAC vs MEAC model.

He has:
SWAC - $1.1M
MEAC - $697k

So $400k more yearly revenue plus the reduction in travel expenses.

You might be expecting too much from a Tougaloo U grad.

MEAC exit:
$250k if protocols followed
$500k if not

No penalty for leaving the SWAC within 5 years.

(Of course this AD still can't put a presentation together, he has "$250,00")

Trustee a better speaker:
"Reduce operating expenses"
"Keep our student-athletes off planes more"
"More opportunities for revenue"
"Provides fan base with more historical (better brand) matchups"

Another trustee brings up that the Southern home game tripled the highest revenue MEAC home game, and that FAMU's D2 home game generated more revenue than multiple MEAC games.

"SWAC has more marquee brands"

FAMU moving to the SWAC would kinda undermine the idea that travel costs will drive realignment below the P5 level, no?

Pretty sure Florida A&M will have less travel in the SWAC, it's in Tallahassee/on the Florida pan handle

They're saying travel expenses would drop. 4-5 schools they can bus to. Average mile difference drops from 697 to 518.

One trustee saying now Year 1 revenues can offset $250k exit penalty.

One trustee asks "what's the timetable?"

"If we do it now with 1-year notice, it's a $250k penalty. If we wait another month, it's $500k because we're violating their protocols"
