Harbison was not bad but the optimist in me says we can find somebody better at RB. We'll be thin on defense though. I guess I just repeated what you said, he will be harder to replace than Harbison.

I think we got some great options at running back, and a coach who specializes in coaching up running backs. Harbison was good, but he's not NFL level talent like Heflin is. Kid is just good and he's got excellent size. We are going to miss this guy big.

I wonder about the "coaching up running backs" even. You get a good running back and he's just good, coaching or not. You can't teach the kind of talent that some of the guys had that Hammock coached. I think you gotta get the players here in the first place is the important thing.

Gus Edwards wasn't anything. He was a backup in Miami and transferred To Rutgers, where he was also mediocre. Justin Forsett was bounced from multsiple teams, till he found success on the Ravens.

The Wisconsin running backs were probably all good beforehand. He's bringing in some great talent, like Jay Ducker.

I liked Forsett from the first time I saw him in the NFL. He was obviously good. Maybe he wasn't big enough for an everydown back but he certainly had the talent from day 1.

I hope you're right about the talent he's bringing in. The consensus on this board seems to be optimistic in that regard. We've been missing the great RBs we used to have.

Yeah, we haven't had the talent at RB. I really liked Jordan Huff, I'm sad and shocked he never hung on in the NFL. He was worth a shot in the AAF or XFL.

I agree. We'd have to go back to Chad Spann, and maybe Wolfe, to see his kind of talent at running the ball. He reminded me a bit of Thomas Rawls at CMU, whom we couldn't stop when we played them. Speaking of which, do you have any thoughts on why he didn't play more at NIU?

Huff was behind Bouganon, who had somewhat of a pro career. Huff was explosive everytime he had the ball in his hands. I remember he wasn't 100% healthy his senior year

I guess I wondered why he was behind Bouagnon certainly Huff was easily the better runner.

I guess only Uremovich would know. Wasn't a fan of that guy. Not sure why Carey was and is so high on him.

ESPN ranked the top 10 returning interior defensive limemen for 2020. Heflin came in at number 7.

This is the kind of thing that could kill college football attendance if other stuff doesn't.

The "one-and-done" hasn't killed the Power 5 basketball conferences and those guys are legit stars.

The few places that have the one and dones regularly are the top schools in Division I. They can afford it because they can attract new talent like that. Nobody else can.

The point you are making has no bearing on the original point you made.

Heflin will likely start next to Daviyon Nixon, former NIU commit that de-commited late after Iowa came sniffin' around our back door right before signing day.

We still have Weston Kramer...i like him a lot. This will create a lot of opportunites for the young guys. Hammock was smart and was able to redshirt a lot of players last year.

Yes it does.

Then you're going to have to explain how saying that transfers hurt college football teams because, like in the NFL, teams/schools have to be able to rely on having stars on their team for 3, 4, 5 years so they can market those stars but college basketball isn't hurt by 1 and dones because it's only the top talent that gets effected by it and they can bring in new talent.

Most teams can't afford regularly losing their top players. A few at the top of football or basketball can afford it.

Iowa has a good reputation with lineman. Last year he was vocal point of opposing teams, now he will be just another guy. We shall see. He definitely has size and strength for P5

Heflin graduated. IMO that fulfilled his obligation to NIU. I said the same when Johnson grad transferred to TCU. I will never fault a kid for taking the opportunity to play for his dream school. There are hundreds of kids looking for schools to play for. Being overlooked isn't being disrespected. If only one schools finds a kid then so be it. All they "owe" is their full effort while they're there. NIU doesn't offer kids out of the kindness of their heart. They want their scholarships paid back in full through performance. Heflin did that. It was a win/win for both.

I respect this post. They are student athletes. If they’re done with school they can do what they want. Sucks to lose talent, but it is their future.

Exactly. He had no loyalty not just to NIU but to his teammates.

Wait now...... I am sure everyone on this message board is not in the same

I am sure some have even moved on or taken a promotion

It was the head coach who decided to tear this team down.
Not the players. Some of his "teammates" as you say were even demoted.
So the incoming coaching staff has not shown the loyalty that you speak of.
So don't blame a player for taking an opportunity to take a step up and play
big time college football at Iowa. Any competitor worth his salt would jump at the opportunity.
He was a walk on that earned everything he got at NIU and he also earned
this opportunity. Wish him all the best.

Sorry, thought this was college football there for a second.

You're right. It is college football. It is also his life and his choice.
You are the one who questioned his loyalty.
Thought I would use an analogy you might understand.
Sorry.

Was it the "school" that gave him his change and deserves his "loyalty" or was it his "head coach" that gave him is chance and left the school for more money?

Either way, this whole discussion of a college player and who he should be "loyal" to is ridiculous and I'm kinda disappointed in my self for dipping my toe into it.
