I hope you're not talking to me.

I have posted on these boards many times that UConn has almost certainly made the right strategic choice for UConn, and I wish them well

Absolutely not, slhNavy91. You have been extremely gracious toward UConn. I enjoy reading your posts and feel your tone and word choice in all your posts are positive (even when you are being frank). I did take an exception recently (and posted this) and you responded promptly and in an appropriate manner.

I strongly appreciate your contributions to this board.

Cool

Analyzing UConn’s New TV Deal
OMAR-RASHON BORJA19 HOURS AGO 0 140

Updated with CBSSN 500K per year estimate from the above article (could be as high as 100K per home game we will have to wait and see)

UCONN/Big East:

Value of Big East deal with FOX: $4.2 million per year, per team
Value of current deal with SNY: About $1 million per year
Expected value of football deal with CBSSports: 500K per Year
Potential football buy game: $1 million per year
Bowl game payout: $310,000, based on 2019
Men’s Basketball Fund: $1.6 million
AAC exit fee: $1 million per year, after 2020
Production costs: Zero
TOTAL: $7.61 million

AAC:

Value of new AAC deal: About $7 million per year, per team
Bowl Game Payout: $2.05 million per team in 2019
Men’s Basketball Fund: $725,000
ESPN+ Production costs: 300K per year (per ECU AD) (studio will be 1M build out, but we will not put that in the equation)
Additional travel: About $2 million per year
TOTAL: $7.43 million

Looks like both will be happy!!! I just wonder what the ESPN payout will be once ESPN/AAC let out the numbers from the redo since UCONN left... Probably not much... 500K less per team tops is my guess

What SNY deal? SNY may be paying $1M for third tier - that is, WBB - but Fox owns those rights, not UConn.
For precision, UConn's guesstimate of $2M per year travel savings for non revenue sports should be in their column, not the AAC's.
You really shouldn't count buy games. Any AAC teams could do the same, and for example, UConn booked Clemson as an AAC member. Intellectually dishonest to claim that a buy game is a benefit of leaving the AAC.
You list CFP payments, but omit the $500k per team per year from the AAC's other bowls. (And we can keep it at '19 figures without adjusting for that $24M CFP divided eleven ways, instead of twelve, for the sake of argument - it will vary for NY6 bowl and performance anyway)
We don't know what the "Navy tier" CBSSN is paying the AAC is, probably in the low six figures per team, so we can leave it out.

With those adjustments, I get
UConn $7.61M
AAC $9.91M
Basically, the difference is CFP and other bowl money.

Increased MBB, WBB ticket sales and donations could very well make it break even. I wish UConn luck in that.

This was almost certainly the right strategic move for UConn. That will still be true without fudging numbers.

I don't think there's any doubt that as of now, when you add it all up and subtract it all out, UConn is netting less money moving to the Big East than had they stayed in the AAC with the new 2020 Aresco contract.

That shows how badly they wanted in to the Big East.

Yup. I think they reckon they'll offset the difference with the higher ticket sales to home basketball games, making it ultimately a self-funding step back up into a Power basketball conference.

Ok... That is a pretty good breakout, I think it doesn't tell the story of why UCONN wanted to jump so quick...However I have no issues with those numbers..... The story is not over yet as we aren’t going to see $1 billion for the AAC anymore. That’s the crux of the matter, per the sports-based business website The Morning Consult. Nick Dawson, VP of programming for ESPN, said that the deal was negotiated with UConn in mind, specifically its blue-chip basketball programs. There is a composition clause in the AAC-ESPN deal and it appears the Bristol-based network will exercise it. That means the 11-team conference will see less money. ESPN has big plans, it appears, for the women’s basketball program, and now all home rights for the basketball teams are owned by Fox Sports.

HOW MUCH IS UCONN REALLY WORTH? We guess the market is going to decide this. The deal is for 12 years and $1 billion with UConn in the conference. Now, with 11 teams — there is no worthy member to replace UConn — we’ll see how low it goes. We are guessing the difference is how much ESPN values UConn’s brand.

Another great Article on why it just made since for UCONN to leave the AAC. I guess time will tell if it was a smart move, but with ECU dropping 4 sports any early indication is that UConn was wise!

I think UConn made a wise move going back to the Big East. But truth is, only time will tell.

RE: [split] UConn football deal with CBS Sports Network
With ECU (and many more schools) choosing to cut sports yesterday, the following hypothetical situation is an interesting one: what if, a year ago, UConn decided to bite the bullet with the AAC and ESPN+, choosing to stay within the league long-term and continuing the long-term risk/unsustainable membership in hopes of surviving until 2025 (the next possible significant realignment wave)? With the terrible COVID pandemic this year, does the threat of UConn losing even more money long-term push the school to drop football altogether (and then possibly return to the Big East, inevitably, again)? The conference affiliation endgame does not change, but the ability for UConn to sponsor football at the FBS level potentially does, especially years after tens of millions of dollars in deficit annually.

As Quo said, only time will tell; however, it is very possible that UConn choosing what it did, when it did, could have very well saved its football program at the FBS level.

So many many many mistakes in that article. UConn women’s basketball doesn’t get anything from SNY in the Big East (the money goes to FOX), Football buy games are available to UConn in either league. The guy can’t multiply. The AAC 34 basketball credits would be worth 50% or more than the Big East 60 credits (not less than 50%). UConn would be responsible for production cost for 50 events on ESPN+, which should cost about $300-500K.

Again, I think it’s the right move for UConn, but the financial picture being painted with this article’s fantasy land of ice cream mountains and chocolate syrup rivers is silly uninformed homerism. I think the move was to re-energize the fan base and place the flagship basketball brand in its best position for success. Personally, I think that’s worth 2-3 million a year they lose in the short run. They can make some budget adjustments to deal with the slight shortfall, plus increased ticket sales and a money from the successful MSG BE tourney could off set that a bit.

Yeah, that's a pretty brutal analysis. He's off by multiple millions on both sides of the equation. He didn't even factor in the payout from the CFP and it's impact on UConn. No idea why he thinks UConn is getting money for the women's programs that isn't owned by them. That's not new information. They can be mad they are losing that revenue stream, but that was happening regardless of any conference move.

The SNY deal is overestimated, but as it was written in August of last year, I understand it was just an estimate. But the true value looks somewhere closer to $300k.

Basically, in an optimistic viewpoint, UConn MIGHT be breaking even on an annual basis as part of this deal. When you factor in the exit/entrance fees, there is no way to spin UConn coming out ahead of this financially. Which still can be ok as there are other benefits to the move.

I still completely understand why UConn did this move, and I think it can make sense for them, but it was not and is not about the money. It's about aligning their central athletic program in a conference that will allow it to thrive as best it can. There's no reason not to call a spade a spade.

This. And in that context it is a fantastic move. Might it also work out financially? Who knows? Maybe eventually they will come out ahead financially---but certainly NOT in the reasonably foreseeable future based on the numbers we know at this point in time.

For those of you wondering, no, this isn't "another" article -- it is the same article GTFletch posted in post #64.

And it isn't "great" either -- critiques / corrections offered in posts #65, 67, 78

Focusing on the money is missing the point, there isn't a big difference either way (not including ticket sales). The payoff is the basketball schedule and conference tournament. As State U, UConn has the option of paying for its preference (in regard to exit/entry fees).

FWIW...

Wyoming to UConn in 2021 with Clemson's help (They dumped WYO for UGA KO Game). Wyoming becomes the ninth team on the Huskies 2021 schedule -- the second Mountain West team.
