ECU jokes aside, actually very sad for the individuals involved.

I bet some UNCW programs/athletes will be similarly disappointed before this is all over...

If it happens, I'm thinking men's and women's track and field, men's and women's swimming and diving. Next in line would be beach volleyball or possibly women's tennis. Softball is safe.

UCF Students Sign Petition Asking for Removal of Summer Term Fees

More than 4,600 students have signed a petition asking UCF to remove any excess fees from summer’s tuition cost during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Senior computer engineering major and creator of the petition Adriana McCabe said it is unfair students are asked to pay for things they do not have the opportunity to use.

The petition asks the university to remove fees — like technology and athletic fees — and states that students that will not be receiving such benefits from the fees during the remote learning period.

The way the swimming coach was dismissed/fired/let go leads one to wonder if the move to end swimming & diving is not already happening.

Men's indoor track was recently dropped for Title IX compliance to put us better in line with the 60/40 ratio women to men ratio we must have.

In the past the sports on the chopping block were M&W swimming, M&W outdoor track, W indoor track, M cross country, and softball.

We are at 19 total programs - 8 men and 11 for women. The most we can cut are 1 - 2 Men's programs and 3 - 4 women's as the minimum requirement is 14 total programs with a 7-7 or 8-6 W to M ratio. Considering our Title IX situation we are more likely to have the 8-6 W to M ratio.

We just renovated the track so that would be tough to cut and swimming is very good at raising funds. Cutting softball would probably result in the biggest cost savings, but what corresponding men's program do you cut in order to maintain Title IX compliance? It's a tough question to answer

Softball is untouchable. It has the finances. It's my understanding that one person has put maybe as much as $4M into the program. Mostly the facilities. Probably not that hard to figure out who, but I don't know if it's my place to say.

Yeah I assumed so and I'm pretty sure I know who you're talking about. But in terms of savings, cutting softball would save the most.

After all that's been done with the softball complex? That's a lot more than the renovation of the track. Track and field has more student athletes with virtually zero fan support. Softball at least draws crowds.

RE: MAC deals potential falling domino blow to Mid Major Conferences
When developing any program, and it's not even sports related, you need to see the bigger picture and get funding from a number of sources that are not reliant on one individual source in the case that source doesn't work. I have to do this with the research science that I do (take on way more than I can do then get others to help support) and I can see that same kind of thing with athletics. There is always a give and take so you have to provide something to the funding sponsor, whatever that may be.

Softball is a good example here. You have someone that wants it and has the funds, so it will survive regardless apparently. It's a shame that all this is going on, but you have to consider a "rainy day" at all times in any endeavor. Bottom line, it's always best to have a wider net of financial support in anything that you do so you have to sell your product to more than just 1 financial source. Not sure that this helps here, but it's just common sense to me.

I know we just updated the track, and I’m sure we have a lot of great student athletes on the men and women’s track team...

But those sports having zero fan support really makes me wonder why we have them? Students shouldn’t have to pay student fees to cover sports that nobody is interested in. Same with cross country.

I went to one swimming and diving event in my years at UNCW.

We really should draw back our funding of sports that aren’t supported by fans. Seems like a waste.

Softball travel is brutal as its a CAA team sport so they have to go north much more frequently with all that equipment.

Track and field competes in regional events and then 1 CAA championship event.

Success in softball is going to be much more difficult than success in track and field.

I dont want to drop any sports, but if you had to softball would generate the most savings, which is why it was on the chopping block when the major cuts were proposed back in 2014 I believe.

Agree

I heard that charge when they were on the chopping block and swimming was saved.

I don't know how to say any other way, except that softball isn't going anywhere. And besides, with the investments made on their complex, it wouldn't surprise me if we didn't face a lawsuit if it were to happen.

I don't think we are in the same position as ECU. They needed to cut sports before this ever happened.

Exactly. Financial support dropped after they fired Ruffin McNeil.

This is the perfect opportunity for the conferences to free their members and allow them to form regional alignments that make sense financially and from the fans perspective. I would suggest they all drop entry and escape fees so we can make common sense decisions that will last into the future.

Conferences that stretch along the east coast should require fewer conference games/matches in nonrevenue sports. The southern CAA, A10, and AAC schools can play each other more cheaply than travelling by plane to play distant conference foes.

Require schools to play the closest 4 conference opponents. The conference tournament can settle the automatic bid.

This from former JMU football Coach Mickey Mathews. Tribe fans would be onboard with this.
