Here's their breakdown:

Men's Sports:
Basketball
Football
Baseball
Men's Cross Country
Wrestling

Women's Sports:
Basketball
Women's Cross Country
Field Hockey
Gymnastics
Golf
Lacrosse
Soccer
Softball
Volleyball
Women's Track and Field

Normally I'd imagine that they would just find a low cost sport they already sponsor for women to be what replaces it, but Track and Field is already one of those low cost ones. Gymnastics maybe?

Bowling or golf? Both have a lot fewer athletes than track. Or maybe they apply for a waiver for a year or two to get their ducks in a row.

RE: Thread wherein we list colleges and universities that are eliminating sports
This waiver thing has me worried. Thankfully the blanket relief was denied, but it could be a real bad precedent. I mean, CMU has to have something researched. When Trev Alberts dropped wrestling and football at Omaha during their transition from D2 to D1, he gaffed and Omaha had to scramble to add men's soccer a year ahead of schedule because of those D1 requirements.

I can't imagine they'd grant too many waivers that bend to their own regulations. If Title IX compliance has to be pretty strict with prongs one and two (prong three has never held up in court), but wouldn't that be a logical thing to request? "Hey, give us a year or two to work through the compliance so we don't have to kill-off sports" compared to "let us cut sports under your minimums for the time being."

I realize not that many folks here give two cents about anything other than basketball or football, but the student-athlete welfare of all athletes is important. They're not property, right? They're people. If we're worried about the student exploitation in the money sports, we should also care about the well-being of those who continually get overlooked.

Ok, off my soap box.

Are there many cross country programs at schools that don't have track and field? I'd think most cross country runners also do distance races in indoor/outdoor T&F, so if they don't have a winter/spring outlet, they'd be less inclined to go there. But I might be oversimplifying.

RE: Thread wherein we list colleges and universities that are eliminating sports
If ECU is truly running a $10 million dollar deficit, I would hope they might consider a new regional conference as well. But its going to have to be a good one, not CUSA east. For now, it appears they are just going to cut sports and make the school add $4 million more to their budget. (How nice would it be if the state allowed ODU to do that?). For now, it seems leaving the AAC isn't even being considered... and for good reason.

Not considered: Leaving the AAC, which East Carolina joined in 2014.

“I am absolutely a fan of the American Conference and we need to be a member of the American Conference,” Mitchelson said. “It is clear to me it will take some level of institutional support so we can enjoy the benefits of rubbing elbows and being associated with some of the best universities in this country. I see value in that.”

Read more here: https://www.newsobserver.com/sports/arti...rylink=cpy

Hopefully if the time comes, ODU's new President will also see the value of being associated with AAC schools like Navy, Temple, ECU, UCF etc.

There was an article last year about ECU's financial woes. Seems school registrations are down significantly and the school has been fighting dwindling revenues and attendance. Covid won't help.

I think we can all agree on that. I cant see tennis going anywhere as we have a pretty nice facility for that. If another mens sport has to go, I guess it would be either swimming & diving or golf. One would think as long as we have the pool for womens swimming, the mens team wouldnt cost much apart from travel. And we don't have a full 18 hole course on campus, so I would also think golf would be minimal cost as well. Those are just the type of programs that need to be in a bus league. I would think schools like WM, HU, VCU, GMU, Georgetown, American, JMU, Radford, ECU etc would agree.

Swimming and golf usually have meet-based schedules that tend to be regional anyway. It's not like ODU golf has to go to Texas two, three times a season. Even if ODU went to a smaller-footprint league, those sports probably wouldn't experience much difference except a shorter trip to the conference meet.

From what Coach Wilder said on @ODUWildman's podcast Men's Golf has their scholarships fully endowed so I think S&D would be next

Makes total sense. I like having a golf team too. Its classy. So basically, if something else gets cut, it looks like S&D. Maybe sailing? After that, we get into the good stuff assuming tennis and golf are safe due to private funding and endowments. Id hate to lose baseball. I would think soccer has to be safe with the success we've had and the rising popularity of the sport.

There are only two sports that can be cut. Sailing and cheer can be made a club activity. But we can't cut any other sports because you need 16 sports at the FBS level and that's all we have (neither cheer or sailing count).
