CMU Drops Under D1 FBS Mandated Sport Sponsorship Levels
To be clear, it’s men’s sports sponsorship and not overall sports offerings. They have filed a waiver with the NCAA and if approved, wondering if we will see some other schools do this since blanket waivers were not going to be approved by NCAA

—-

Central Michigan became the first Division I school in the state to eliminate an athletic program as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the immediate discontinuation of men's indoor and outdoor track and field — a decision that will save the university hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, but also one that leaves the athletic department out of compliance, having fallen under the minimum number of men's sports offerings
——
It also leaves Central Michigan with five men's teams, one below the NCAA Division I requirement. Alford has been working with the NCAA on a temporary waiver, and expects an answer soon, perhaps as early as Wednesday. If the NCAA doesn't approve the waiver, Alford said he has a fallback plan, but didn't elaborate.

"I have various models to make sure we're in full compliance this year," Alford said.

My guess is the fallback plan is to begin sponsorship of the cheapest male sport they can offer.

Fighting Muskie gets a gold star! Yes, I agree, I think the plan for a while has been to eliminate the Men's Track program and bring back the golf team or perhaps tennis.

FIRE UP CHIPS! :)

NCAA should not provide a waiver to someone who knowingly breaks the rules.

They went for the ask for forgiveness, not permission, strategy.

Plan B is probably like Tennis or Rifle, those are probably the cheapest two men's sports.

I agree, the waiver should not be granted. It’s perfectly ok if they want to cut sports, but they know that is a requirement of being at the level they’re at, so if they want to cut, then they need to drop down to FCS or below.

FCS also requires 6 sports, D2 is only 5.

In general I agree, but if CMU can show it truly was due to lost revenue because of COVID, then its different.

Deny the waiver.

If CMU can't uphold FBS standards, they need to drop down, where they belong.

They've been in the Top 25 and have just put in a new FB facility. Long tradition of competitiveness in MAC FB.

This is like saying Troy should drop down.

Did they drop below or did they simply as someone posted in the other thread drop scholarships for the sport but continue the sport

Last year, CMU had an athletic budget of $27 million, of which $20 million was a subsidy. That means they only generated about $7m from athletic operations. That is beyond pathetic, nowhere near what should be FBS standards.

Their attendance is bad. At a 2018 game they announced 10,000 official attendance and a reporter counted 255 people in one half of the stands. It's an embarrassing excuse for FBS program.

Numbers are far from empirical. You are basing all off data from a source or two.

Those budget numbers are gross expenditure factoring in the cash value of scholarships.

CMU went 1-11 in 2018 and the win was a narrow one over Maine.

They drew 35k fans for a game in 2012. CMU is fine in FBS.

The obvious solution is add Men's Cross Country and the Coach should be the same as the Women's Cross Country Coach.

If CMU is going below the mandate, and unlike Chicago State, they do so knowing the consequences, then it means:
a) They have it on strong authority that the NCAA is going to slacken on sport minimums,
b) They have it on weak authority and they're hoping it works out,
c) They have another men's sport in mind that they can shove in there but they want to see if they can get away with one too few men's sports first,
d) They're not only willing but maybe even planning to drop to D2 but need to go through the rigamarole of asking for a waiver so they have additional cover when they announce a dropdown.

I think something between B and C is the correct option. The AD has said he's aware they're below the minimum, and is asking for a petition, but they have a backup plan in mind.

To be fair---they cant afford it because they were ordered by the state to shut down operations. I have no issue with a temporary waiver given the unusual circumstances. That said, it would be a good time for CMU reexamine their decision to compete at the FBS level. Im not sure they are all that committed. Its possible Cynicloes "D" option is in play. Much easier on the administration if they want to drop down if it appears they were "forced" to move down.
