Prayers for Michigan
Not a Gov. Whitmer flame...many people don't realize what just happened, but it could have some pretty serious ramifications.

3 dams just failed subsequently throughout the day today due to torrential rains in the north central Michigan area up-river from Midland, MI. Over 60,000 people in the county could be impacted, including the three towns at the bases of each of the dams (roughly 10,000 people combined). Downtown Midland (Roughly 40,000 people) could see up to 9 feet of water in parts of its city center and was already experiencing significant flooding in areas around the river prior to any of the dam failures.

Unassuming town to most, Midland is the location of Dow Chemical's Global HQ and one of its largest petro-chemical and polymer processing facilities...which happen to be located right on the river that's seeing a 30-35 foot flood surge. Could have some pretty big market consequences if anyone holds CTA-A/Dupont Stock and cause pretty huge environmental problems. On top of that, the largest non-coal power plant in Michigan one of the largest power plants in the country (MCV) by population served is located in Midland and services essentially all of the thumb and mid-palm of the mitten (roughly 2.7M people). Both the Dow HQ and MCV are on grades below the expected crest stage of 42.1 feet above normal...

https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/19/us/michig...index.html

This is the dam made to retain the largest up-river water load upon failure this evening...there was one dam still structurally holding at the point of this failure, but it was rated for 15,000 acres...this dam was rated for 40,000.:

RE: Prayers for Michigan
My phone started blowing up this afternoon shortly after the Edenville Dam failed. I grew up in Midland and still have family there. Mom was evacuated early this evening, along with an older brother and his wife. They're at my sister's house which should be safe from the waters.

My sister said their rain gauges showed 7" since Sunday. Actually the flash flooding started yesterday when a dam failed upstream from the Edenville dam. Today both Edenville and Sanford dam failed. Unless you have been there you wouldn't realize how flat things are there. Very little 'high ground' to be had but you don't get a wall of water like you would in hilly terrain. Just water for miles, as it spreads out.

Glad my family is safe for now.

Prayers for Michigan
Damn. Or is it Dam?

Best of luck to the citizens, they have (more than) paid their taxes. They deserve far better than failing 100 YO dams.
Bout time they demand better, they’ve paid for it already, 3 times over.

We get the government we deserve. Sorry Mi.

This country needs a serious infrastructure initiative. Could also be a huge jump start to the economy.

Apparently at least one of the failed dams had been cited repeatedly by officials for safety violations, including failing to fix spillways to prevent flooding.

Something I think everyone can agree with on principle.

Hilarious...thousands evacuated and no word yet on any fatalities. Stay classy.

Many earthen dams just simply need to be decommissioned. Especially as most municipalities don't want to lower the reservoir levels for the needed inspections.

yep, and all the recent administrations have talked about it. i would expect something to come to fruition in the first part of next year, we would of course have to borrow another few Trillion to pay for it, just adding to the long term fiscal issues.

RE: Prayers for Michigan
Been listening to the Dems/media blame Snyder for the handling of the Flint crisis for years now. (I think that's the #1 reason we have Gretchen in office now) Of course, now they're saying Gretchen's completely innocent of this. I'm not blaming her one way or the other, I'm just saying when the governor in power has an R or a D next to their name greatly changes the narrative & how you're supposed to view a crisis. Therefore I think it's only fair the GOP attack her for this. GOP needs to stop sitting on their hands & stop being the party of trying to be 'we're the nice guys' & get on the offensive for once outside President Trump.

I don't buy the 'don't politicze it' crap b/c it'd be a different story if the governor in power had an R next to their name, & I personally am sick of that.

If a Dems in office - don't politicize it.
If a Republican's in office - burn him.

The problem is that the infrastructure in this country is so outdated and on the brink, it can't all be fixed.

While the federal government should pony up the dough, so should the states.

The other caveat to this is, normal people don't want to be inconvenienced if they have to re-route due to work being done. And if the work is done in Union country, it'll be astronomical.

Basically there were jobs already ongoing, so he put his name on it.

Those dams were nearly a century old, probably have about a projected 50 year lifespan. There have been discussions about their safety and a pending sale. Obviously, they will now need to be rebuilt and upgraded.

Video captured shortly after the Edenville breach yesterday.

I feel for those who have lost their homes during the covid-19 crisis.

I really thought Trump might get it done as it seemed like the only issue of his that democrats would jump on board.

Michigan is a very poorly run state, so infrastructure issues don't shock me. I don't know why anyone would choose to live there. But the way they tend to vote, it also seems to not be the brightest bunch of folks in the country.

I hope everyone who has to evacuate gets out safely. Wherever they end up, I hope they don't bring their politics with them.

RE: Prayers for Michigan
Dam being non-stop blamed on Snyder by media & Dems.

Between that & everyone being mailed a vote-by-mail application, expect Michigan to be Blue a loooong time.

But you know, it's the GOP who's trying to politicize the situation. :shrug

I don't see the point in leaving. Why should I leave when Dems leave too & continue to vote Dem & ruin the states they move to as well? Might as well just stay here & continue fighting.
