And I agree, it would really help if we could makes some noise, as a conference, by winning some of these games. But I know one thing for sure: you've gotta schedule it before you can win it. Maybe Tarleton will be the ones to lead the way on this for the WAC. Perhaps BCG is thinking in order to be the best, you have to play the best. Even if they get throttled, his young players will be better off for it when conference play rolls around. NMSU and their big ol' arena won't look so tough after facing A&M and UCLA on the road. Can't hurt for recruiting purposes, either. I like it.

With all due respects we have beat a P5 school every year the past 4 years. #6 ranked ACC Miami, Illinois on the road, Washington State twice of the PAC, Arizona State of the PAC on the road and Mississippi State of the SEC on the Road. All wins. Our losses were in the final possession vs. ranked USC and #2 Kansas on the road so NMSU and are big ol arena would be just fine and still very scary, especially for WAC teams. I'm confident we would throttle A&M and have a very good chance vs UCLA. Of course they will schedule Tarleton. They figure an easy win. NMSU trys to schedule upper echelon teams but they don't want to play us.

I remember when we moved to the WAC and then Sun Belt thinking we were gonna light the world on fire and all that lol. It's only natural. We obviously have a ways to go in football but we're there in basketball! I'm excited to see how Tarleton does.

We are not there in basketball. We need to play a better schedule in nonconference and win some of those games. We have not won a regular season title in the Sun Belt or a postseason championship. I will feel better about the basketball program when we make it to the NCAA tournament or NIT tournament. As for football, I remember in the 70's, when both Tarleton and the Bobcats were in the Lone Star conference. Tarleton used to be an easy win in those days. I am not sure that would be true today, not with our football program.

That's the difference between Tarleton and TXST. I am familiar with both programs.

Tarleton has spent the last 20 years not shooting for conference championships (that was expected). Instead after multiple #1 rankings and deep NCAA runs, we always felt like we were a piece away from an NCAA championship.

Constrast that to TXST, where years of Davalos's dougie ball burned the program to the ground and forced a rebuild with The Stash. I really like what Kasper has done and for the first time in a long time I feel like we are in almost every game. However we are still striving for 20 win seasons and a post season bid.

I'm curious to see how Tarleton adapts to the move and if becoming a small fish in the big pond changes things.

I'd love the idea of some plucky ag school from nowhere Texas becoming the next great thing, but the stats tell us otherwise.

Two schools I know very well....SFA is a "plucky" forestry school in the middle of NOWHERE, Nacogdoches, aka "Nacanowhere". They"ve made some noise in the Tournament as of late, and in due time, I'm confident Tarleton will do the same. I did the 1st half of my undergrad at SFA, 2nd half at Tarleton. It's uncanny how similarly these two schools have grown over the years. I'd say they're now on the same level in just about every measurable category, which wasn't the case back in the day. Difference is, SFA's trajectory has plateau'd, while Tarleton's is still on a steady rise. I"m afraid SFA has gotten just about as big as it ever will be, while Tarleton is positioned for continued growth...like UNT (North Texas State) type growth. It's inevitable that growth will spill over into Athletics. We have some of the best coaches and in the biz right now, and not just in basketball. Couple that with athletic-minded leadership, unique recruiting geography and full A&M support, I think Tarleton is really gonna surprise some people over the next few years. I really do.

Nice. Another trip to LA. Playing out West appears to be the strategy.

Impressive to get UCLA and Pepperdine on the non-conference schedule. Tarleton also has the conference game at California Baptist. Speaking of CBU, they have a game at Arizona in the fall. I also noticed that UVU is at Utah on November 10th.

Good! This is what the WAC needs and this thread is about...strong non-conference scheduling.

Strong non conference scheduling only helps the WAC if we win those games. Most of these games are scheduled as body bag games with a payday.

What other A&M D1 schools? Surely you must be talking about Prairie View. If so, I give you this: https://pvpanthers.com/sports/2016/9/13/...adium.aspx

The University of Texas System has 240,000 students and FOUR D1 schools under its umbrella:
UTA
UTSA
UTRGV
UTEP

The Texas A&M System, until July 1st, has 150,000 students and ONE D1 under its umbrella:
PV A&M
(Tarleton - 2020)

It would be crazy to think A&M is not trying to do everything it can to balance the power.
Because we know PV is forever tied to the SWAC, Tarleton, a FOUNDING MEMBER of the A&M system is going to lead the way for a wave of A&M D2 to D1 moveups, with FULL support from A&M. I predict WTAMU will be next, then A&M Commerce. Then probably a CC-Kingsville merger. All with the full A&M support that Tarleton is currently enjoying. Book it.

Umm, A&M CC is D1 too.

But yea Prairie View's stadium is quite nice. Best FCS facility in the state, but A&M didn't buy it for them. They have raised and probably are still raising the money themselves.

Yes my bad I forget CC is in the SLC. But they are treading water and will likely merge with Kingsville to offset the 30,000-student potential south texas monster that is UTRGV. Especially if UTRGV starts up football. And theres talk of UTA starting back football. A&M is, and must be in offense mode to regain balance.

Yes PV raised 2/3 for the stadium with student fees, rest came from the system.Looks good to the media to say they "raised it themselves", but dig deeper and you'll find the A&M money. Tarleton is doing the same thing with student fees, but has millions alotted for athletic upgrades, by tbe BOR. Nothing happens without BOR approval, and they are backing this D1 movement.

The article says nothing about money from A&M just student fees and donors and of course they need approval, thats not the same as A&M cutting them a check. I dont really get the feeling that the A&M-UT rivalry extends to the university systems but I suppose it possible and wouldn't be surprising. I know most Tarleton students don't like UT but thats because they're also mostly Aggie fans to begin with.

Regarding UTA, the subject of them bringing back football has been brought up multiple times on the Sun Belt board. None of the UTA fans think its feasible or likely. They've had studies and nothing has happened. Just like UTRGV. If they wanted to do football they probably already would have. If they were waiting for some reason then the rona probably killed any chance.

I get that they had a study. Again, so did UTRGV, and so did Wichita State. No wheels have turned regarding football at all. You would think it would be perfect for WSU to move up considering theyve had football before, they're a pretty big name due to basketball, they have AAC membership, AND UConn was nice enough to open a spot up for them. But nothings happened. Search for UTA football on the Sun Belt board and you will find their fans saying that as much as they'd like for it to happen, it probably wont.

Like all big decisions, it takes time. Only disadvantage for UTA is its mostly a commuter school, like UNT. I chose Tarleton over UTA for that very reason. UTA already has a stadium in place, which is a huge advantage. But lack of attendance has to be a concern, and the only drawback as far as I see it.

But yea Prairie View's stadium is quite nice. Best FCS facility in the state, but A&M didn't buy it for them. They have raised and probably are still raising the money themselves.

If PV has a newly spruced up 15k stadium with hopes to expand to 30k, why aren't they in the discussion for our little WAC FBS experiment? Or are they and my head is just spinning with all the conspiracy theories floating around?

Because they still need to raise like 25mil for that because the TAMU system isnt paying for their upgrades

They are already at the $15k FBS minimum. The $30k upgrade would just be gravy.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but my impression is that PVAMU is deeply attached to the SWAC and its unique/ancient traditions, particularly the marching bands and drill teams. Can't imagine they'd want to give that up for a conference that doesn't do that stuff.

You're not wrong. SWAC'ers for life.
