I figure the two weakest ones are football and basketball.

RE: East Carolina dropping some sports
I remember one of the most disappointing attendance games was s home game against ECU. The Tigers won against Tennessee the week before and we were playing the Pirates for the conference lead. ECU fans who came were very disappointed by the crowd. They were used to playing before sold out crowds at home.

Hate to hear this type of news. However, is evident that ECU needs their football program to succeed. If ECU football is good, seems like their athletics are good as a whole financially. Only a matter of time before Memphis will probably have the same meeting.

We beat Tennessee in 1994?

We were in contention for C-USA football in 1996 after beating Tennessee with a 4-6 record?

I don't think either of those things happened.

For starters, we were 2-3 in C-USA before the Tennessee game in 1996. We finished the season 2-3 in C-USA. Because East Carolina wasn't even in C-USA yet.

whoops, I didn't see that he said "won". In 1994, we lost to UT and then played ECU for that Liberty Bowl Allicance title before we went into C-USA

That 1994 game was on ESPN so everyone could have watched it at home. It was freezing and raining so everyone did watch it at home:-)

I didn't know women played Lacrosse.

East Carolina last dropped a sport when it discontinued men’s soccer in 2005. It added women’s lacrosse as its 20th sponsored sport in 2016.

I was at that game. It was a nice warm day. Disappointing day for sure, Tigers played like crap. I think that was when we where in the Liberty Bowl Football Alliance. No CUSA for football yet, I think.

Glad you said that. Because Keeper's post didn't smell right to me. We were never in contention that year.

Oops I conflated two seasons! My Bad, but the UT game had been on TV and the ECU fans were surprised that the attendance wasn't like that game. Had to tell them that most of the fans at the UT game were UT fans. Embarrassing then. The city still dose not support the Tigers like it should, but at least it supported college game day well.

RE: East Carolina dropping some sports
We did play ECU (11/23/96; 25,059 attendance) next game after beating UT (11/4/96; 65,685 attendance) in 1996. Tigers lost 10-20. However, Memphis was in CUSA and ECU was independent at the time. ECU was 8-3 that season with a win over #12 Miami, Memphis was 4-7.

I think the most miserable I've ever been after a football game was the 2000 UT/Memphis game. It was cold, wet, and full of UT fans in our home stadium. Scott Scherer threw a 24yd TD pass to Billy Kendall with 3 minutes left in the game to put Memphis up 17-16. Then UT drove down and kicked a 34 yd field goal for the win.

Gave up a 44 yard kick return after our go ahead TD.

Overall they are supposed to save almost $5M but that includes other stuff:

Quote:The plan includes significant cuts to operations within athletics, including department and sport budget reductions, regional scheduling and travel efficiencies for select sports, an elimination of several positions which are currently vacant, a limit on summer school for student athletes and suspending all professional development/conferences for a minimum of one year.

East Carolina is already on academic thin ice. They ranked last in the conference in academic progress this prior-year and the year before and rank last in the conference over the last five years.

RE: East Carolina dropping some sports
I always thought they had a good football program, went to three games there and stadium was sold
Out. We won one lost two, the one victory was close and I believe DeAngelo scored 4 t.d.
They have a great OCS that would look great at Memphis.
The game they won in Memphis that cost us a bowl, cost Ground Chuck his job. Chuck could beat the teams he wasn't supposed too and lose to the teams he should beat.
I liked Chuck, he played a tough OOC schedule, beat usc,Arkansas, ect.
Good luck to ECU
