I always thought Miners is pretty unique in college sports. I think there's only other school (can't really remember the name but they're a Div III school in Missouri) that has Miners as their nickname.

For the record, while I despise them, I always thought the UConn (sounds like Yukon) Huskies was pretty clever. Beats the "Nutmeggers" or some other name that actually has something to do with Connecticut.

I'm an LSU alum, but cmon, how many teams have the name "Tigers"

Hurricanes is good, especially the Golden Hurricane

The Green Wave

Wolverines is good

Army Black Knights is better than Midshipmen (Sorry Navy). Why not Navy Destroyers?

Does Golden Hurricane even make sense for Tulsa? Or is it some sort of term related to striking oil? Haha

Tar Heels is a great name, but the Arkansas Monticello Boll Weevils and Santa Cruz’s Banana Slugs get my vote for a tie.

RE: Rank the Top Nicknames in College Sports
I am surprised that no one has mentioned Furman University Paladins. What is a Paladin? Why it is another name for a Christian Knight.

Why is that important, because if you take the full name of the school with the alternative name you get Furman University Christian Knights.

I am partial to
University Of Delaware Fightin' Blue Hen's
South Dakota School of the Mines Hardrockers
Columbia College (SC) Koala's

Banana Slugs forever. Good shout out to Brandeis as well.

I get a chuckle out of the non-threatening ones. UMBC Retrievers, because, c’mon man! SF-B has the Terriers, but theirs doesn’t look as deranged as Boston’s. Penn has the pacifistic Quaker, and who knows what the WKU Hilltopper really is.

Fighting Irish.

This nickname came from the exploits of ND president Father Corby and the Irish Brigade in the Civil War.

That's a women's college fwiw. Because male athletes wouldn't be excited to be a cuddly little bear? :)

I was talking to their cross country coach once, and he encourage me to look on Youtube to see them fight. Pretty impressive!

There are some teams that have different names than the others at their schools. You probably know about the Long Beach State Baseball "Dirtbags". Did you know about the Wayland Baptist Women's Basketball "Flying Queens"?
