I can't decide if this guy is serious or has gone stir crazy while sheltering in a Biloxi Sun Herald news van. I'd rather just move on to the AAC

The possibility of realignment among the Group of 5 conferences hasn’t earned that much traction in recent years, but it now seems more likely than ever with the COVID-19 pandemic already spurring significant changes in college athletics.

C-USA AND THE SUN BELT ARE A GOOD FIT
For the Group of 5 conferences that don’t bring in millions of dollars in TV money, life may return to simpler times when cable networks didn’t call the shots for conference expansion and realignment. Revenue from TV contracts has dried up in recent years, leaving less of a hurdle if conference officials sit down to iron out a realignment plan.

The Sun Belt and Conference USA both draw about $500,000 per school from their multimedia deals and the two leagues seem a good fit

Looking at our future schedules, it appears that we have already started transitioning to regional OOC games in football. I am not sure how this proposed merger advance UAB’s brand. Does anyone know the AD’s position on realignment?

I'm fine with going smaller, but I'd rather have it turn into 3x 10-team leagues somehow. The league suggested for UAB sucks.

I want to be in a conference with WKU, Southern Miss, App State, Troy and maybe Charlotte or Georgia State. CUSA & SBC need to take the top 10 schools and turn it into the best basketball/football hybrid conference rather than focusing so much on regionalizing. I think they'll find that it covers both since there'll be more fan interest and condenses

RE: The COVID-19 pandemic has left little choice. C-USA and the Sun Belt have to realign.
IF COVID-19 turns out to be a brief interruption of a year or two, there will be little effect on conferences. It will be like WW-2 which forced the Rose Bowl to be played in North Carolina a year or two but not since. Inflation of costs for athletic programs will have a much more invasive effect since it will not "go away" like the COVID-19 virus has been predicted in D.C. Relatively few P5 games are played outside the traditional conference outlines established when teams traveled mainly by train or bus. Air travel expansion by "jumbo jet" is largely among schools in the G5 ranks (except for a few P5 "money games" at invitational sites) trying to get games on TV. Until the BIG 12 decides to grow back to match its name (probably at AAC expense), I don't expect a new round of realignment to happen.

That would be the best scenario if no P6 offer available.

I consider C-USA, AAC and Sunbelt roughly equal G5 conferences so I would cherry pick the following as major future urban centric power schools:
UAB
Memphis
Houston
USF
GA State (Atlanta)
Charlotte
FIU or FAU (Miami)
UCF
UTSA
Tulane (NOLA)
MTSU (Nashville)
WKU

AAC teams will never "join" with other G5 teams because they feel its beneath them and the way the promote their conference. Its more likely that they would stick with what they have or, if absolutely necessary, "steal" from other G5 conferences.

What the G5 schools do need to do is to consolidate the Olympic sports and let the AD's schedule. Play the teams nearby and forget conference travel. That's a lot of money saved, might save some of those programs from being disbanded.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I've never considered WKU to be an urban centric school. 03-drunk

If we are including them, might as well include South Alabama...since Mobile is way more of an urban metro.

I was running out of obvious choices between Mobile, Charleston, ECU, ODU, Bowling Green which is why it was listed last. Maybe the 2020 census will give some updated info.

Birmingham-Hoover is the No. 50 MSA in the United States with 1 million people.

Hampton Roads (ODU) is No. 37 with 1.7 million.

Bowling Green is No. 239 with 179,000 people not counting the turtleman.

And can we please just quit posting about re-aligning CUSA with the Sun Belt, the Patti LaBelle Football League or the Oskaloosa, Iowa American Legion?

I agree with this. Outside of football and men’s basketball, the other sports could definitely benefit from AD Scheduling schools within close proximity rather than conferences.

I suspect that most of them do schedule teams close by. Not all of the conference members have all of the same sports so conference travel may not be that big of a deal cost wise. What kind of championship would the Olympic sports play for if this comes about? Conference champions typically get a spot in NCAA championship tournaments with an opportunity to get publicity for their school and conference. I can see recruitment for those teams taking a hit since they could be viewed as glorified club teams.
