I think this a fabulous idea, in fact the inspiration for conference tournaments was birthed on the ability for Power 5 conferences to sell out a major arena for four days and most importantly get more $$$$. That benefit is significantly less for the MAC.

Actually I wish the MAC would extend the same policy for MBB and WBB as well. Use that weekend for a more complete round robin schedule that will establish a true champion to send the NCAA tournament from a historically one-bid league.

Jerry,

Do you realize the MAC basketball tourneys will only be 8 teams?

Way back when not all teams qualified for the MAC tourney. I asked one of our coaches and he didn't like it. Tough to motivate athletes late in the season if they feel they won't make the conference tourney

A twenty game MBB conference schedule with no divisions! I'm liking it.

Might as make all sports one division if they are going to eliminate tournaments. Saves a lot of money on travel. 07-coffee3

Football requires divisions for a championship game.

Great point Steve. Then again that is why the MBB coach is usually the second highest paid employee at most Universities, I expect him to adapt to the situation.

Let's use last season as an example. At one point we clearly would not have had a shot of making the MAC tourney. Our best player, Toure, would have to decrease his playing minutes late in the season as our future depends on those returning next year. That happened this season, Boubocar often was on the bench late in the season while not being in the foul trouble he was often in early in the year. Either he was hurt or Murph was looking ahead to the next season.

Additionally with the mass migration of transfers, a Chris Barnes needs to hustle if he truly wants to find a more acceptable venue in which to play. While that motivation might be counterproductive with respect to team play, he still has a reason to work hard and play his best.

There is no clear answer here, but I like the idea of a one bid conference actually sending the best team to the NCAA tourney.

Once again on point Steve!

Football is a different animal, playing a near Round Robin is simply not possible as it is in Basketball due the number of teams in the league and the games available on the schedule. The conference title game is a one night affair that I believe makes money for the MAC, which you stated is dependent on the two division configuration. The MAC FB champion this year may not have been the best team, I think Buffalo was. Then again I did not see a quality MAC football team stay home during bowl season. sans Toledo. Football is indeed a different animal.

Happy to see divisions go away in basketball. I have long advocated for it.

If he can't get his team playing hard even after being mathematically eliminated, that's on the coach.

Most football teams are out of contention by November, yet they still get "up", play spoiler, etc. Just ask dumpster fire NIU who prevented WMU from going to the MACC last season.

He hasn’t seen home tournament games the last few years. Say they didn’t want to play would be nice.07-coffee3

Thought we discussed baseball in this thread but I don't see the posts.

Anyway, it appears that the MAC is going to a 30 game regular season. I don't know if that means there will or will not be those February games down South or if they will be cancelled.

It seems to me, lopping off the non-conference games (most?) and start 3 or 4 weeks later with games in the border states and then conference games makes sense to me.

When it comes to baseball and softball I can understand why the MAC is cutting costs holding it at a neutral site. However, was it that expensive to hold the MAC Tournament back at the site of the #1 seed? Even though we didn’t win it, I enjoyed getting out to a couple of the games at Oestrike when we hosted the MAC Tournament in 2007.

The other changes I think make some sense at this point. Have to re evaluate when we get closer.

Steve thanks for bringing up baseball. I see two options:

1) Get rid of the sport. Owchinko and Welch are heading south these days and quite frankly the cold spring weather deters me from attending games now. I love EMU baseball, it is why I enrolled 46 years ago, but it is what is.

2) Play half the season in the fall along with MLB and the other half in the spring. Plenty of time to load up on games in nice September and October weather in the Midwest without the travel costs south in February and March.

I would play a truncated season of only conference games and maybe six OOC games against schools in border states in March.

We can NOT dry dock MAC baseball for say 4 years. Some schools (WMU?) would fall below the NCAA min. number of sports.

#2 is the way to go. Do NOT cut baseball. Cutting SB was bad enough.

There are an increasing number of indoor practice facilities in MI and the talent level of HS aged players in likewise increasing. The local players to field good teams are available.

Travel roster down to 70 from 76. And it appears this only applies to MAC games, not non-conference matchups.

Nickle I don't disagree, baseball talent is here and always has been. Actually Oestrike developed his teams in the summer Adray Appliance League after the MAC season. Probably a NCAA violation now.

You live in the same area I do. This would have been the last weekend of the MAC regular season and we could count the good baseball weather days on one hand to this point. Last year was similar if not worse.

The NCAA clearly needs to realize that their insistence on scheduling the College World Series in early June has reduced baseball to a Southern and Western sport only. OSU was the last cold weather state university to win the National Championship, 54 FREAKING YEARS AGO!
