Getting Scooped
The league office stays pretty quiet here.

The Sun Belt was one of the last leagues to cancel its conference tournament even though it was in New Orleans of all places. We found out from a "source."

Hancock/Whitney Stadium has an SBC logo that we had not seen before. Despite the fact this logo was revealed more than a month ago, the Conference office says nothing.

Now, Brett McMurphy is reporting the SBC will have "virtual" media days instead of the normal New Orleans gathering, becoming the seventh league to do this. Which means it's a fais-do-don't this year.

It sure would be nice if the league would let us know what they are doing rather than find out about it from someone else.

As crazy as it sounds...

I miss Karl Benson.

This new commissioner sucks.

All of the Benson haters now see that he wasn't so bad after all. The conference office was much more vocal in it's support of SBC institutions and much more available when he was here. Not a fan of the current commissioner.

Yeah, I'm with you on this. He is a big disappointment to say the least. I expected a lot more from this commish, but apparently he's just not qualified.

It's worth dredging this post back up.

(11-23-2019 11:14 PM)BirdofParadise Wrote:  Our commissioner said in July "we need to do a better job of telling our story." Then he de-nuts the deputy commish in charge of media to the point where he resigns just before the first game.

No one has replaced him, leaving FEWER people to tell our story.

Now we have a story to tell as a league and no one is telling it.

He faux pas badly on the Georgia State/Southern thing.

He has been willing to do few media interviews, yet WE HAVE A STORY TO TELL.

When he has been interviewed he spends time telling everyone he's not just a basketball guy.

When the "dance" happened in Statesboro and three players got ejected because of officials over-reaction, his office said they would have no comment.

Evidently the officiating was really bad in Jonesboro today, but I bet he's quiet about it, too.

It's early, but he's done NOTHING to promote this league since he took over...and this year our league has PLENTY to promote.

And I think since this post was made you can add to the list of things App's bowl situation from last year as well. And those CUSA people think they have a bad commish because no one will pay them what CUSA used to get for TV when it was what the AAC is today.

Not to mention several staffers have been let go by this commissioner ... league office is in interesting times and not in a good way.

You guys know it's harder to get rid of a commissioner than it is a coach of AD.

You are expecting our commish to do something while he shouldn't even be our commish. Think we can expect much bigger problems from him before his ass is on the road.

No, it is not a big disappointment. It was very clear we would see this type behavior out of him and why he never should have been hired. He is a very poor administrator and is still a shock he was hired. Politics got him hired and of course he will yell raceist when someone wants him gone. Extremely poor selection from day one but we will have to live with it.

Who in their right mind would have hired this man other than politically correct US college presidents?
I saw nothing in his background that would remotely qualify him for the position.
Hell, I really miss Wright Waters. He was at least his own man, without all the PC bull****.

I mean how hard is a little communication once in a while from the main office to let us fans know what's going on? Maybe he is or isn't doing anything behind the scenes other than collecting a paycheck but perception is not good. And yes I do feel like the average fan could be doing a better job.

Sorry I worded that wrong, I meant to say that the average fan if they became comish, would probably do a better job.

Sounds like SBC fans need to start a #socialmediacampaign to try and pressure the higher ups to get rid of Gill.

Who would be a good replacement to lead our conference?

I keep hoping that one day he will bust out of his shell and surprise us all as to what a wonderful and effective conference commissioner that he is.

It's not uncommon for a conference office to get scooped by reporters. Leaks happen, sometimes on purpose.

Really, what kind of magic do you guys want Gill to do? Since getting the job he's got a new city excited about hosting the new basketball tourney. Put the stupid pod system on hold. Schmoozed ESPN pretty well and the Sun Belt has gotten plenty of + attention (newly announced condensed games with coaching commentary).

Don't know what kind of things you say a common fan would be able to do that Gill hasn't. Don't like his job? Take that up with your school leaders (AD/Chancellors)

Only one city bid on the hoops tournament, ESPN deal was already in place, + is begging for content & they would take anything and put it on.
